Hi Alex, I'm kinda confused on how the GK3 pickup works versus the GK kit like you have assembled in your stratocaster. Id prefer to use the Kit only to keep the aesthetics of the guitar. My question is are you using two chords? A quarter inch and a midi cable? Or is it all functioning using the switches. Like synth only, and then a mix of guitar and synth? I've been trying to do some research before making such a big purchase and can't find a lot of information about it. Thanks!!! Also, great guitar playing!!
@AlexHutchingsMusic4 жыл бұрын
@@JasonWysocki Hey mate, no worries. So both the GK-3 pick up and the GK kit have the ability to send the regular pickup signal down the 13 pin cable. On the Roland GC-1 the wiring is internal on a GK-3 there is a short cable that comes with the pick up that comes out of your guitar and then runs down the 13 pin cable in to the unit. It's pretty cool. I hope that helps explain a little more for you. All the very best and thanks for watching. ;-)

Hello there Alex, the video is great. you're a wonderful musician and a hell of a guitarrist. I've been watching your videos for a while and love 'em all. You see, I normally don't use much of the synth stuff in my gigs, but still think the unit could be very useful tool. I would really like to watch a demo of the unit with ideas of use for traditional guitar sounds (clean / dirty / acoustic), but maybe with alternative tunings and blended types of instruments. Anyway, thanks in advance and best regards

Will the Boss SY-1000 work with my Godin xtSA guitar that has a 13 pin plug and pick up built in? It seems Roland/Boss combined the SY-300 and the GT-1000 with the GR-30 (via GR-55 tech) and slapped a fairly outrageous (for most guitarists) price tag on an effects box that still requires the 13-pin GK pickup and cable to get the most out of. I have owned (still own) GK PU-equipped guitars and Roland guitar synths, starting with a GR-30 and ending up with my beloved GR-20. I own the SY-300 and link that with the GR-20 (plus a SY-1 and EH Synth9 as outboard add-ons). All that seems like a lot to deal with, but it’s definitely manageable when table - rather than floor - mounted. For us guitar synth enthusiasts, I’m not sure that a really expensive all-in-one box (plus required expression pedal) is what is needed. I would recommend getting a used GR-55 and used SY-300 to pretty much get everything really wanted from the SY-1000 and save yourself some $$$.
@AlexHutchingsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Some fair points mate, but perhaps another way to look at it is; It's good they are still putting energy into developing Synth guitar for us enthusiasts... I for one am one of them. ;-) Just glad they are still searching to give guitar players more options to experiment and experience synthesis with a guitar.

Does the GK pickup open up more possibilities for sounds, or just improve tracking?
@kevinmcguinness11134 жыл бұрын
Great demo Alex - is that a standard-size Jem at the start that you've retrofitted the GK-3 to ? Did the body need any modification to fit the pickup in ? Seems there's not enough space on mine between bridge and bridge humbucker to get it in - only got ~5mm, Roland recommend minimum 8mm ? Really want to retrofit a GK-3 and synth unit (probably a GR-20 to start me off) to my Jem, but don't want to buy one unless I can figure out if I can stick the GK-3 in the gap first. Thanks, love your work and your demos are awesome.
@AlexHutchingsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Thank you mate. Yes it's a standard Jem but I do recall it being very tight, as I also have my action pretty low. If you've never used a GK before, they can be simply stuck with a double sided tape (which it comes with) there's a whole kit to suit various guitars in fact.... One thing I would say is, if you're lucky enough to own any other guitars it may be worth being somewhat flexible and trying it on them rather than change the set up of your jem (should you need to) Over the years I've had many different guitars some with preinstalled GK kit's and others I fit the GK too, there's always a bit of trial and error depending on the particular guitar but the good news as I mentioned is there is no need to drill holes or compromise any guitar you fit it too. I hope that helps in some way. All the very best.
@kevinmcguinness11134 жыл бұрын
Alex Hutchings, helps a lot Alex, thnx for getting back to me, appreciate it. My first foray into guitar synths, but I think I'm already hooked with all the potential. Yeah, the 5mm I mentioned was for the width, not the height, sorry, should've clarified. I'm not sure, but the GK-3 height might also be an issue ... Roland recommend ~14mm.to.ensure clearance, I've got really low action and only got ~9mm. Only other guitar I'd want to fit this to is my EBMM Majesty, but there's no way I'm going to rout or cut into either of these to retrofit a GK-3. If only MM did a piezo-to-midi converter interface built-in to the Majesty, there's a thought 🙁. Thnx again.
@AlexHutchingsMusic4 жыл бұрын
@@kevinmcguinness1113 No worries mate, I completely understand, but like I say the double sided tape should not effect the finish in anyway and can be cleaned off when not being used etc... However you can use certain parts of this pedal without the need for the GK too... I'll be unloading some videos later this week featuring sound with the Jack plug, so you may be interested to check those out too.. Either way all the very best to you.

@@AlexHutchingsMusiccheers Alex, will subscribe and look forward to those videos. Just to close off on this particular point ... there was a GR-20 with a GK-3 for sale locally and the guy let me take the guitars down this evening and check it out. Upshot is, there's not a chance in hell of squeezing the GK-3 into either the Jem or the Majesty without substantial body mods on both. Not gonna happen, will have to look at other options .which is a real shame. Thanks again for your input, much appreciated. All the best 👍

I am sure you are very busy, but I would like to ask did you programme the drums or are they played, V drums? Also on the SY 1000 can I edit all the patches and stow them? I love synth sounds, but I am really into Jazz, so would the only way I would play piano sounds would be to link it to a DAW with appropriate software, or could I go straight to a piano sound module via a MIDI to USB cable. Only keyboard pedal I can find is the EH Key 9. I am looking to record standards and my compositions to a 32 track recorder with me playing everything, (will programme the drums!) Nice one Alex, have they included parameters for the Godin pickup this time, as the GR55 was a bit of a pain with Godin guitars. I originally had the GC1 strat but could not get body parts for it,Roland said Fender had parts and Fender said Roland had stock of the parts that i needed, i ended up buying Godin Guitars, Also is the tracking better on that old trusty fender?
@merman934 жыл бұрын
Royston James- you need the high pass filter from primovasound.com to tamp piezo triggers in Ghost and RMC piezo with gr-55, but I thought Roland included that in GP-10. I still prefer mag-hex over piezo in dynamic type effects/synths. The SY-300 is VERY different depending on pickups in guitar, tone circuit etc. so would expect the dynamic synth in SY-1000 would be designed for mag-hex over piezo.

Hey Alex. Great demo and enjoyed the video. I wish I did a bit more research as I just bought the Boss GP-10. If I had seen this I would have saved up my pennies a few more weeks. I am happy with the GP-10. The only thing I was dissapointed in was that you can't have a compressor if your using stomp boxes in the FX section. I like a bit of compression with the OD-1 like on my GT-8. I did however use the VO drive amp with a compressor before the preamp stage and works well. And so to my question. Can you have a compressor with an OD-1 or and OD/DS effect on the SY 1000? I may get the SY 1000 next year as it looks and sounds awesome. Cheers. 👍
@AlexHutchingsMusic4 жыл бұрын
Hello sir thank you for watching. I'm glad you found a work around with the GP-10 in the end, I must say that is still an awesome pedal too. But to answer your question yes you can absolutely use a compressor and OD on the SY technically you could probably have 3 or 4 compressors on the SY as there are 3 separate FX blocks. An independent compressor, an independent DS block too so many options available. I'll also be uploading another few videos on the SY in a little more depth so hopefully that may help you to understand this beast a little further. All the best to you.

Thanks Alex for the excellent video. I previously owned the SY-300 but switched over to the GT-1000 about 6 months ago. I have also owned the GR-55. This looks awesome in that it seems to combine the features from all these units. I have a couple of questions about the SY-1000. Will the SY-1000 have a good set of presets derived from GT-1000 will the ability to download the preset GT-1000 style patches? The SY-300 had lots of synthesizer patches where the GT-1000 had lots of guitar patches. It was nice to grab the artists GT-1000 patches and download them. There was a much wider selection of plain old guitar patches for the GT-1000. I only occasionally use synth effects so that's why I switched...but I miss some of the SY-300 stuff. The other question I have is will you be able to trigger an external sound module via MIDI Out? Think I'll have to get this. Has all the GP-10 features. Only cons I can think of is no IR, No shimmer effect, you can't have dual stereo guitar sims/setups, no sound module for sampled sounds like piano etc and it's a shame they haven't developed the poly FX. A poly octave fuzz or something would have been nice, or a hex delay. No pedal is perfect though

Sorry for the confusion Fonz but yes you do in fact need the GK pick up to use this.
@RobTackettCovers4 жыл бұрын
You need a pickup that works with Roland / BOSS 13 pin gear...different folks make non BOSS / Roland guitars and pickup systems that work with GK devices...Godin is one company that makes various guitar models that are Roland GK compatible...if you really love the guitar that you play, Graph Tech makes saddles, bridges, etc. (including a Floyd Rose bridge equipped with piezo saddles), and makes a mod kit called Hexpander (you can Ebay search that, as an example: Graph Tech Hexpander) and you can turn your current guitar into a Roland GK compatible guitar, if you so desire...
@AlexHutchingsMusic4 жыл бұрын
@@RobTackettCovers Hey Rob, you're absolutely right, there are other brands that will work, I actually own a Godin, an old Brian moore and also a custom guitar fitted with the Ghost system, but in my experience I've found the GK-3 pickup or GK-3 installation kit the most successful and reliable so I would always recommend using the for piece of mind. ;-)
@RobTackettCovers4 жыл бұрын
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Hey Alex, thanks for responding...yes, I just wanted to throw out some options...I have used both, and I'll agree in regard to sound quality, etc. because the pickup on the GK systems, whether it is a GK3 or the GK-KIT-GT as a permanent install on a guitar, for some reason, the GK pickup has a better sound thing going on...don't know if you've found this to be the case for you, as that kind of stuff is subjective, but for me, with the GK pickup, the modeling just sounds more accurate to the real deal IMO, even though there are settings in the Roland and Boss GK devices that accommodate non-Roland/ BOSS GK compatible pickup/ 13 pin systems...hey, can't wait to find out more...hope you are well...oh, on another note, I got to see you live when you were in the Portland Oregon area when you were on tour with Steven Wilson...great playing, man!

Thx for the presentation and I really got some questions: 1. It looks like, your guitar is unplugged, I mean, there's no cable, though it looks like, you play the stuff legit 2. I can see the midi pickup and it's connected to.. again nothing. Where's the GK3 unit, as shown on the JEM (if I'm dead wrong please forgive me, I really tried hard to spot anything, but there's just a cable laying loose over your leg) 3. Would love to know, if the SY1000 can be seen as a symbiosis of the SY300 and GR55, meaning, it tracks midi and/or regular and if so, how does that work connection- and cable-wise? 4. Will there be offered midi pickups for 7 and 8 string guitars with the GK3? 5. Are there also sounds and features of the GT1000 built in? Thx and best wishes
