EVERY SINGLE SOUND on the Boss SY-1000! I hope you enjoy this very nerdy video. This boss SY 1000 synthesizer guitar pedal is the best technology in the world when it comes to synth pedals. It is releasing on January 31st for $1000.
Song at the end of the video: • Alternative Rock Elect...
Infinite Sonic Possibilities Await
The BOSS SY-1000 synthesizer pedal for guitar and bass represents the pinnacle of BOSS and Roland's guitar synth technology, refined over decades of player feedback. Three distinct synthesizer instrument engines can be played simultaneously for exceptionally deep and rich sonic textures. You can plug your guitar or bass directly via 1/4" cable just like any other effects pedal, or you can use Roland's GK pickup for the most precise pitch tracking and per-string parameter tweaking. Factor in its built-in effects loop, multi-effects capabilities, instrument modeling, external control inputs, and freely assignable footswitches, and it's clear the BOSS SY-1000 is the most advanced synthesizer pedal ever devised.
Updated sound engine for more sonic potential than ever
With its updated sound engine, driven by custom DSP and featuring 32-bit/48kHz sound quality, the BOSS SY-1000 is the best-sounding BOSS guitar synth to date. You'll also notice that the tracking is ultra-precise, with no latency to distract you from your performance. And with the ability to dial in three simultaneous instruments, from synth leads and pads to bass and more, you've got a ton of creative potential right at your feet.
Ready to adapt to your preferences
Whether you normally plug straight into your amplifier, multiple amps, or go direct, the BOSS SY-1000 synthesizer pedal is ready to adapt to your style. Its footswitches are freely configurable, so you can put your most-needed functions right at your toes. And the outputs are freely assignable too, making it easy to split up your signal path however you like. You could send the synth sounds to a separate amplifier, for example, or record your guitar and the synth sounds on separate tracks in your DAW. You even have a send/return effects loop built right into the SY-1000, allowing you to add your favorite effects pedals to the mix.
Create hybrid guitar and bass tones
By connecting your guitar or bass to the SY-1000 with both your GK pickup (sold separately) and your instrument's 1/4" output, you can combine your instrument and synth tones to create an endless array of sonic textures. Add a saw-wave lead synth sound to your guitar to take your solos to new heights. Add pads to your bass tone to create extra octaves of sonic interest. With the ability to dial in three simultaneous instruments, the various tonal combinations you can craft are practically endless.
Dynamic Synth engine makes guitar-synth more expressive than ever
We're no strangers to BOSS guitar synth technology here at Sweetwater, and we're mighty impressed with the Dynamic Synth in the SY-1000. For the best results, connect your instrument to the SY-1000 via your GK pickup as well as your 1/4" instrument output. The GK pickup will give you ultra-precise pitch tracking for the synth sounds, while your 1/4" output will inform the synth's envelope shape and how it responds. In other words, Dynamic Synth follows the natural volume envelope of your instrument, further fusing your synth sounds with your playing style.

The SY1000 and GM 800 require a pickup. The SY200 and SY1 do not require a special pickup. The GR55 also requires a special pickup. The GM 800 requires the new GK5 version of the pickup where is the rest that I mentioned only require the GK3.

@@manifestomode1 You're very welcome. I will always strain to bring you the best answers and videos. Yes I have tried the midi guitar 2 and by no means is it a replacement for the gm-800. However it does replace other synth pedals like the sy-200 that do not use a multi track pickup. Since it lacks a hex pickup you will not be able to play chords with any amount of accuracy. However, single note stuff has nearly caught up to the hex pickup single note stuff. In other words, for solos yes the midi guitar 2 is great and a solid option. For any chords, including diads or two note chords, the hex pickup will be superior.

After going through a lot of your videos and from other channels... I'm still confused. GR-55, GM-800 and SY-1000...i know they're meant to do different things, but in your opinion, which one is ... let's say, best bang for your buck? which one has less troubles, i.e. latency, phantom sounds, etc. etc..?
@GearSounds
@GearSounds 8 ай бұрын
That is a very tough question to answer, I would say the best bang for your buck is the SY1000. However I would also say that the best synthesizer itself is the GM 800. The GM 800 with a good multi-effects unit would do everything that the SY1000 does and so much more. Plus the tracking on the GM 800 with the new GK5 pickup is superior to the SY1000 or GR55. I would say the GR55 is too outdated to compare to either of these units. However that is my personal opinion as there is no blending function available with the GM 800. That being said I have a tutorial here on the channel of how to use the GM 800 properly.

I should have tested what the non midi pickup sounds sounded like but from what I was told it was just a few hand picked SY-300 sounds. So basically it is an SY-300 with GK pickup capabilities. The sounds in my video are only with the pickup, they didn't have a guitar without it so I couldn't test that for you guys. However, I did answer that I hadn't tested palm muting either.

I'll break down your issues into two halves. 1. This is the same platform as the GT1000 so it has more effects than most all multi-effects units on the market, hundreds. 2. This is wave-based synthesis not PCM-based synthesis. If you want PCM-based synthesis you want the GR55, which you can add sounds to.

Hello, is there any difference in "AMP modeling" sound quality when output of standard pickups goes through GK-3 system + 13 pin “MIDI” cable (Roland GKC) to “GK in” input of Boss SY-1000 and when output of standard pickups goes direct to “Guitar input” of Boss SY-1000? Thank you very much.
@GearSounds
@GearSounds 4 жыл бұрын
The amp modeling needs the GK pickup to work in most cases. You aren't getting an amp modeled sound from your actual pickup in most cases, it is just a dry signal. That sound is typically blended into your GK signal (with effects added sometimes).

@GearSounds
@GearSounds 10 ай бұрын
I can't believe you watched that long without realizing that lol. That being said the SY1000 is definitely more versatile for sure because you can use guitar tones and essentially use it as a multi-effects pedal. It has a lot of the effects that you need whereas the GM 800 is very limited on the effects you can use. The GM 800 is a better synth tone but offers no guitar tones whatsoever. They really are different units but I think the GM 800 set up properly is the ultimate Guitar synth. Check out my video on the two cable method for more of what I mean about setting it up properly.

This isn't pcm synthesis (sound effects triggered by your guitar and adjusted for pitch). There are zero sounds on this meaning not a single instrument. That is what the gr55 is for. This is wave based synthesis and or, a real synth. It makes genuine tones on its own like a real synth so the sounds you hear are what is intended.

Great review.!!! The only thing is that many of us guitar players use the PCM sounds... and I don´t see how the new GR 55 is taking so long... As Brock Davisson says... A new SY300? that is an already great guitar synth. Can´t help feeling down... disappointed... There´s been no update for the GR 55 in more than 10 years !!! Gear Sounds, I appreciate if you can bring a little news for the next GR... good job man...!!!
@GearSounds
@GearSounds 4 жыл бұрын
I am with you on the PCM sounds but from what I hear this is an amazing substitute and allows for better tracking and to do things like bends and slides. You can't do that with PCM sounds. I don't think they will update the GR 55 as I think this is actually superior. I will ask my boss rep about any updates to the GR 55 right away and reply to this comment. I am glad you enjoyed the video and I'm happy there are so many guitar nerds out there like me.

@@GearSounds Well... I can accept that it is a great product with the improvements about the tracking and bending... but let me try to explain... and hope don´t missunderstand me... I´m a working guitar player in a classic rock band. I used to play the strings and horns in Comfortably Numb, the brass in I feel good and Silly love songs, even played the saxophones in Hit the road jack. and I could solo with sax, violin and harp, and they do bending... I worked my ass off to play Vehicle, hammond on Black magic woman, and many more songs.... and all those sounds came from a little GR 20 even with its limitations... The only instrument unplayable was the piano because the lagg of the tracking in the 5fth and 6th strings and the bad sounding piano... I need all those sounds to sound as close to the real things as possible... have you heard all those instruments in the Yamaha Genos? the violins, horns, nylon guitars, even electric guitars..!!! they are awesome...!!! unfortunately, I´m a sloppy keyboard player... I guess that´s the purpose of the guitar Synth... to bring all that power to guitar players... It seems that Roland abandoned the product or the players... maybe it had not the commercial response they expected... I don´t know... but these days you can´t give yourself the luxury of giggin´with a bunch of guitars, acoustics and electrics and keys... we need to be as compact as possible even with what the high costs implies... like playing with in ear monitors instead of the big bulky and heavy stage personal deafening speakers, you need to be competitive, get gigs, keep you equipment light. I have several years now looking to the Fishman triple play, wireless, pretty controller, instead of the old, bulgy and ugly GK3 that roland hasn´t change in guess 15 years...? 15 YEARS..!!! With the Fishman maybe I could Buy a Yamaha MODX 61 as a sound module... but I would feel really ridiculous on stage... I´m a loyal boss fan but Can´t wait any longer... maybe if I go to the shrink...
@GearSounds

I would get the GR 55 if you are looking for exact replications because I didn't hear any convincing replications of real instruments in the SY 1000. It was more for pure synth tones. No I have not heard the yamaha genos, I will have to look into that. Yes I don't think it had great success or they would continue to sell it and update it rather than making a new product. Haha you don't have to go to the shrink but pick this up from guitar center when it comes out. I don't think you'll be let down.

Can it do a natural clean guitar sound as well? I mean the signal directly from a guitar to a modelled amp with no effects? Does it sound good/convincing? Important if you need it as standalone replacement for an amp and an effect unit.
@GearSounds

Yes it can but when you say convincing I would say no. I would consider something like the two notes captor to be better or even the strymon iridium. If you want cabinet simulations these are just serviceable. When I do have to use them live I combine them with pedal or I go to the house mixer and boost 1k. and cut a little bit of 2.5k for that shrill synth digital sound to warm up.

@GearSounds

The instrument modeling is much stronger on the GR55 which is a 15-year-old piece of technology. This unit is not meant for modeling instruments, it actually does a horrible job of that as it is just using synthesizer recreations rather than actual recordings of instruments. What this pedal does well is real synthesizer tones like you would find on a keyboard, it is not for replicating instruments. That would be the SY1000 and even that doesn't do that very well but the GR55 perfectly replicates other instruments that aren't a keyboard.

This is the number 1 question. The gr55 is what you are looking for if you are trying to replicate other instruments. That being said it has plenty of flute like sounds as it is actually trying to replicate a real synth. It is using a different type of synthesis called wave-based synthesis instead of PCM basis so it's not triggering sounds but actually creating sounds as you play a note.

Peter, if you want polyphonic function with a synthesizer on a guitar you need a separate hex pickup. There is no way around that. Absolutely no way around needing a hex pickup for polyphonic sounds as it's impossible for a computer to interpret a chord properly without lag. I understand you may not like the gk system and I wish we didn't need it as well but it is absolutely essential towards getting the best guitar synthesizer sound in the world.

MASSIVE DIFFERENCES! These are TWO different beasts. The GR-55 makes sound effects that replicate other instruments. THe SY-1000 is a different type of synthesis all together. It is wave based synthesis rather than PCM based synthesis on the GR-55. If you want piano sounds get the GR-55, if you want a TRUE synth with sound shaping abiities and better tech, get the SY-1000. People constantly say this and I agree but people also mistake the two technologies for the same thing. The GR 55 plays recorded sounds while the sy 1000 is a real synthesizer that also generates some sounds. It's technically possible for the sy 1000 to do everything every boss product has ever done digitally. They just won't because it wouldn't benefit them.

I that is because PCM synthesis itself is rather dated. There is nothing else to improve upon in that tech. If you have the GR-55 You have the best PCM based (sound effects of other instruments, flute, piano, sax etc) synthesis on earth. It doesn't get any better for guitar. @@lazyfingers4382 The GR55 engine not only would barely benefit from the sky hardware, it would not even use 10% of it's processing power. Wave synthesis is the complete creation of a new synthesized sound so the hardware is beefy for that purpose. If you're just playing recorded sounds then you just want to add sounds to your GR55 with third party software. Doable by the way. Not sure how PCM tech could get much better unless you're simply talking about the screen and the FX platforms like the reverbs and delays built in then yes, but even that is fixed with updates so I guess no, I still don't see the point there.

I changed a LOT of settings but with direct input they sounded awful and digital, however I can't see this changing with a cab. You're very welcome, it actually isn't meant to replace the GR-55 line as that didn't sell very well. Your constructive criticism is appreciated but allow me to explain. Had I gone through the CTRL 1 and CTRL 2 this would have taken me 3 hours to film. Unfortunately, I had so many other booths to get to and I did my best to showcase the patches that I liked. If you look I do push the ctrl 1 and 2 on my favorite patches. I am glad you feel my review was the best. I had this idea at the booth and thought I would be silly not to film it. I would have done that for every single patch but I just did not have the time. @@jefffisher598 Bro I get it and I agree 100%. However less than 25% of what I play is pentatonic. The rest is minor, Dorian, lydian, major or some strange made up nonsense lol. That's why I was giggling but yes, it's a valid problem for sure. I just know I have to play blues to get guitar players to watch. I tried to balance both. If I played just what I wanted to not a lot of people would listen. My choice of what people want to hear isn't always right but my newer videos, I've learned this better. Thanks for your critique man. I appreciate it. I'm always trying to improve

I've been a guitar synth freak since the 70 with all the garbage tracking and cheap tones. Im very disappointed in this unit. Why doesn't Roland keep going with the synth module upgrades to a Fantom or something like that? These cheap FM sounds with their modulation is a step back not a step forward. When they had the opportunity to really separate themselves from the field, they blew it. Is it time to go with a high power software like Omnisphere with a Jam Origin or even god forbid a Triple Play unit with all their cheap tones just to trigger something good? Comeon Roland, put some real sounds into your next piece before Im dead.

This unit is AMAZING the best synth for guitar ever made. The tracking is amazing. If you want fake instruments you want the GR-55 which is also getting an update in 2021 or 2022. Exclusive information from me told to me by roland. This is a MASSIVE STEP FORWARD and the sales don't lie. I am confused what you are comparing it to. This is an update of the Sy-300 not the GR-55. They literally DID separate themselves from all other manufacturers. I can't use software at shows nor do I want to. Software will always be better than a pedal. That being said you can use this pedal to control midi. I think if you want "real sounds" you may want to take a look at the GR-55

Agreed. I really, really wanted to like this and have money burning a hole in my pocket but it's still the same old 1980s Casio toy keyboard sound. I have a VG-99 and I see no reason to upgrade. You know what I'd buy in a heartbeat? An all analog GR-300 reissue. I have an old one, and that's the best, warmest sounding synth they ever made.

its not garbage. the multi task using foot switch in a compact way is better that the one u mention. Maybe ur style doesnt suits on this but that doesnt mean this device is not excellent to others. Of course its excellent if u use this when u are a looper and a singer in one band set up. Try looping old dude and include this in ur set up before u die and die with coolness

The GR-300 is amazing and an analog synth wouldn't be possible with the 13 pin system would it? It would have to be HUGE right?

Thank you for this video. It shows me I won't be buying one of these. I don't need hundreds of useless sounds that to me sound like the same crap Roland has always been putting in their devices. I can midi my guitar into a computer and get a lot better sounds than these.

You are absolutely correct but this is for a live setting where you don't want to bring a computer with you. If you look at my other video where I pick only my favorite sounds I think you'll find some more musically useful sounds there. While the technology isn't quite there yet it is definitely getting close

I have a GP-10, which is like a really cut-down version of one of these, and the presets they tend to put on this sort of thing are awful. You can get great sounds out of them.. but Boss don't. For one thing the amp modelling is surprisingly good (again, demos/presets tend to sound crappy - just trust me).

@@CLaw-tb5gg To my ears the amp modeling was not as good as a kemper, however the synth sounds are currently the best you can get from a pedal right now especially for poly. I'm not sure if you mean that you didn't like the sound of the pedal or if my sound quality was bad. I went direct in because the Namm show floor did not have this pedal going through an amp. This was the absolute best sound quality that could be achieved with direct input. There is another demo that was done through an amp by one of the boss reps if you're interested here it is. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipO2lYNrgbytiMk
