No harm using the L version on passive pickups or the standard version on active pickups. Boss documentation shows that the only difference between them is that the standard model has "cable tone simulation" and the L version does not. The cable tone simulation attempts to alter the signal the same way a cable would when using passive guitar pickups. However, applying that same simulation to an active pickup wouldn't be accurate, since active pickups aren't impacted by cable resistance nearly as much. So they made the L version to basically offer a flat frequency response, which more accurately reflects how passive pickups would sound through a cable. So, if you use the "L" on a passive guitar, it will probably sound brighter than with a cable, because a cable would cause some high frequency tone loss. If you use the standard on an active guitar, it will probaby sound warmer than with a cable, because the cable tone simulation will roll off some of the higher frequencies. In summary, I think the "L" is actually the most "true to tone" device you can get, and will provide the best signal, even for passive pickups. But it may not sound like what you're used to with a cable, and for some people, that means they won't like the tone.

A cable acts as a capacitor, and well, EQ tone filters EQ via capacitance, so I can't see how a minor adjustment of an EQ wouldn't do the same thing no different than using your EQ's for anything else in the chain that changes the range a little. I have played through way more expensive wireless systems I know to be overpriced having studied electrical engineering and knowing pretty well what goes into such devices, but this is more justifiable if the given specs are not fudged. I built wave devices in the electromagnetic spectrum like microwave spectrometers Light analyzers, ground penetrating radar, sonar at a wave tech company, custom one offs for famous institutions too, and gave it up for guitar building and repair adding mechanical wave theory to my pallet, and there's a crap load of snake oil in all audio device fields, especially with "Audiophiles"! The downright ridiculous pseudoscience crap they are often willing to fork over ridiculous amounts of money for, like little bags of crystals to tie onto cables one for over $200! Even if it did anything at all (It does nothing at all) you could get the same thing at a rock shop for 3 bucks and put it in a little baggy! Even much of the stuff based on real science is touted as "A world of difference", and "all important" and people fall for it all the time, because they do not do nor understand the applicable science in mathematical form and have no understanding of quantification, meaning how much the difference is in the real world, and it's not as much if it does something but how much, and a lot of it is inaudible to the human hearing range, as well as in such minute quantities you will be unable to hear a difference at all! There's way more placebo effect with musicians than in patients in extremely well controlled, double blind pharmaceutical research studies! Everyone is chasing "Tone" and ignoring the fact they already have many ways to make the changes they are looking for in greater quantity without having to buy new pickups every 3 months; They always sound better in the store with the swift tongued salesman, their idiot friend's, and equally clueless forum wannabe scientists and "Influencers" (I don't know Jason, and haven't even watched yet so I can't say) all up in their heads! Then a month later they sound like shit, because they have the same crappy speaker in their amp that really matters or don't know the difference between gain and volume, and the differences between your sound alone in a room vs. within a mix... Ears prefer acoustic guitars with good low end, microphones not so much! Oh the madness I get to deal with!

I’ve got the Boss WL-20L and have used it on both. Great little device. I have decided however to get the pedalboard version and use it with my active guitar. Easier for charging and no extra cables to keep track of. So if I read this. Comment correctly if I turned off the cable simulation it should not have an effect on the tone of my guitar then right? I mean that’s what I have gathered from this. Thanks for the video! Good stuff. Might need to do a review on mine soon.

Jason mixes-up the words "Transmitter" and "Receiver" several times in this video. So if you're new to wireless systems, the Transmitter ALWAYS goes into the instrument or item that you want to send to the Receiver. The Receiver always goes into whichever item you want to send the signal into. So, for example, for a guitar into an "amp", you would plug the Transmitter into the guitar then plug the Receiver into the amp, pedalboard, or audio interface on your computer. Thinking of picking up this system myself.

Just got the Boss Wl20-L delivered yesterday. It's perfect. I came to your video to see if it's compatible with pedal boards. I had it plugged into a Split Personality pedal and initially wasn't working, and then connected it to the board without the amp switcher and it WORKS FLAWLESSLY. Excellent. Thanks again for your video, it was a great help you showing it on your board connected to the looper. Loving this thing. Cheers

I was looking for a little wireless system for home usage and was pretty unsure about what to buy since most of my guitars have EMG active pickups. I would like to thank you for this video, I decided to purchase this product and I don't have any regret. Also with scentific review, there's frequencies cut at 20khz . I've played through numerous such systems, and of the dual-plug types I've tried,I would recommend skipping the cheaper XVive and JoyO. They are not reliable and I've had several that have not lasted six months. I also have a mixed bag of these Boss units. Apparently I bought two mixed pairs. I have four plugs total: Two WL-20L, One WL-20L, and one WL-T(2). They seem to be completely interchangeable as long as you pair them by plugging the transmitter into the receiver and remove them after the blinking stops. Then plug in to guitar and board or amp. Incredibly rugged and reliable.Worth every penny. I've had mine for years now after giving up on XVive and JoyO,and am not looking back.

At 8:40 you called the receiver, the transmitter (AKA sender). Not a big deal for those of us who know the difference, but some don't, nor would they all use a little understanding of plain language to make the connection based on the common parts of the definitions applicable to many relatable terms, and some freak may even chew you out hard for it and conclude who knows what.😉

"Smart tech" was smart for the user, not for the maker, no one even thought about planned obsolescence, right to repair was standard, not something one had to fight for, companies competed by offering better products than each other, not by who can make the most crap for dirt cheeper, plunder the most people, manipulate the most people to accept shit for Shinola™, and sell more of and better data on them to facilitate more of the same...

Not that I'm bad, just not as good as way too many others 1/10th my age I would have to catch up with. It is quite a loud noise. It doesn't matter if the guitar is muted or not. Even cheaper devices do not have this problem. It is always the same with two ibanez guitars and two boss katana amplifiers. Yeah it takes me a little to switch but you get faster at it. It would be ideal to have two of these and I'm sure they would work fine. But you still have to kill the volume of the guitar you're setting down so that's another step...not a big one, but you might find it's easier to switch out the wireless, especially if you're using the same effects/amp unit for both guitars like I'm doing.

Hello Jason, I was wondering if this system has allowed you to reduce some of the hum/noise (like por example, when you are not touching the strings). Currently where I live, the electrical outlet is pretty old, so I get a lot of hum. Somehow I have the feeling that this might be a potential solution. Thanks a lot!

I've had a WL-20 passive with my active basses for maybe 2 years. The only problems have been with the guitar jacks. It crackles with underslung jacks and the inset jacks on Ibanez SRs are too deep for the WL senders. Both can be fixed with a short jack socket to plug lead.

This system is nice and very easy, plug and play wireless really has its benefits. they will work on small stages but also on big stages 50ft is along way.. What i don't really like about the boss is the price, there are several systems equally good to the boss system however the prices are much lower, the boss isn't remarkably better so to be honest i don't think the price tag of 200 dollars is justified. Also one little thing to keep in mind is that the frequency these use is 2.4 MHz, that is the same frequency as a wifi network, you could experience some cut-out when the venue has an open wifi and many people are connecting to it, the 2.4MHz can be pretty busy network. This isn't guaranteed, most likely they will just work fine. But the freedom of going wireless is just fantastic, i used to have a sennheiser system and i loved it, no more hassling with cables...imagine being in a 5 man band, singer 2 guitarists and bass player and all have their cables on stage.......well...no more
