Howard and the team at Astill Design will spend the next few months leading up to Meguirs MororEx 2024 to repair any needed repairs on BOSSXC and spend time in the finer detailing.
In this Episode, Howard paints and polishes the brakes and Diff components, removes the exhaust system so it can be recoated at Comp Coat Sydney, do some paint repair on the undercarriage, polishing bolts and Phil from Fuelworx installs a new breather line on the diff.

I love this kind of stuff. Been out of the game too long Howard. Looking forward to getting back into it once I finish building my new shed. I've learned so much from you since you established the channel. I couldn't have imagined how you did half the things you did back in the day from reading Street Machine Magazine that featured all your past cars. You have to love modern technology hey ? Regards Tony

Nice @Austill Design. Just a tip, when I linish and polish stainless bolts for motorcycles, I also put the bolts in a hand drill BUT I use short sections of rubber/silicone tubes that I push over the threads so the chuck doesn't bit into the threads and damage them and it keeps the compound out of the threads. Cheap silicone drinking straws work well of this.

There's two types of stainless steel, Autensitic and Martensitic the latter can be used in magnetic applications, normally the 400 grades of stainless Hope this is helpful, love your video's

Hi Howard. I used to sell bolts back in the day, if memory serves me correctly, 304 stainless is magnetic, and 316 is not. You could use a magnet to sort the two. So a 304 stainless would work in the ABS sensor as a pickup. However, stainless is ok in a static load situation like bolting on a guard, but if there is sideways loading, or multi directional forces like an engine mount bolt, or alternator pivot bolt, high tensile is the only choice. You would probably want to stick with high tensile in a brake application as the stainless might be too brittle?

Would of thought at the level of the build the ABS sensor bracket could of been welded to brake support or a better looking bracket, rather then just polished flat bar..

Hey Howard, that filter under the wheel well for the charcoal cannister, is that just venting the cannister out to the open air, ie: vapor line from fuel tank to charcoal cannister then line to that filter? Is that how that works? Trying to fix a fuel smell in my Z32, I know it's charcoal cannister was removed and needs to be replaced.
@AstillDesign

Yes mate, it runs the stock FG canister in the boot that has a purge line and valve connected to the engine plus the external vent.

Hey Howard Love the show look forward to every episode.l am just wondering if the stainless steel bolts react with alloy
@AstillDesign

They can tend to bindup. A bit of never seize on the header bolts helps.

Bugger. No not you but the timing of this video. I'm heading to Rockynats next week & I just finished today, re-polished all my suspension bits, but the bolts I feel like I need to do them all again. Great tips Howard & thx again ;-) ......PS. By chance are you heading north this Easter weekend?

Hi Howard, I was under the impression that for NSW engineering (ASRF anyway) , the markings on fasteners should not be removed. Otherwise their identity/specification comes into question. Could a fastener with markings just be polished? And is that Cerakote on the exhausts? Cheers.
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign 5 ай бұрын
That would be correct, you can polish the bolt with the marking still on it. Yes it is cerakote

Does the fact that this is fully engineered with full rego get taken into account during high end judging? Or does it just mean the owner could potentially cross enter it in street classes too? Otherwise seems like a pretty big disadvantage when going against all the pure show cars that are barely functional
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign 5 ай бұрын
Street class and street Elite have no undercarriage detail. This car is not eligable in those classes. Many Grand master cars have been fully engineered including Tailspin, Fitzy's FC and Forged. It does make the process a little more difficult and have an effect on the design of the build.

Ive done much bolt polishing with scotchbrite, etc, but end up with surface rust on them after a while. Do you coat them at all?
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign 5 ай бұрын
Must be the grade of stainless. 316 is marine grade but may not suit for suspension work etc. You certainly could use a clear designed for the job.
