Hey Howard. I did the exact thing last weekend on my wife's VE commodore: 2012 build and lived outside all its life so clear coat was badly oxidised with lots of love marks. Used Meguiars No 2 Glaze on a Meguiar's red pad then Mequiars Ultimate Compound on a yellow pad followed by Ultimate Polish on a black fine pad. Car came up exceptionally well. Can't do anything about the chips and scratches (car really needs a respray) but for 12 hours work . . . . looks great!

My old grey coloured X Type 2005 unfortunately lives outside through hot sun summers and very cold winters. There is a big patch, (400x500mm) on the roof that looks completely dull, I mean matt; like its been wet and dry sanded. Im assuming it still has some clear left but I don't know. Would it be best to T Cut by hand to try and get some shine and then wax it to prevent any further deterioration? Or would it be better to wet and dry sand the whole roof with very fine grit, 3000???? and spray some clear on? I don't have a flash spray gun so was thinking of just using a spray can clear? Yes I know, not professional but I just want it to look OK and stop any further issues. Im old, the car is old and I can't afford a new one or a professional re-spray. BTW like an idiot I used my Karcher to clean the car once when it was covered in mud and turned the nozzle to a fine point and I stripped some of the clear off the bumpers so was going to w&d sand feather the edges and blow some more clear onto the underlying grey paint. Any advice please.
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign 4 ай бұрын
Hi, bit of a tuff one to answer, If your going to paint it with clear you will need to use at least 800 wet to get it to stick.
@allanpennington
@allanpennington 4 ай бұрын
@@AstillDesign ok thanks I’ll try some cutting compound by hand first to see if I can bring it up to some sort of shine then wax it maybe. I’m assuming that even the the most coarse compound would not be as aggressive as 800 wet and dry paper?

With those sections of clear, ie where the bird poo has eaten into the coating, and you don’t want to risk sanding through, I’ve noticed that a lot of late model factory paint jobs where that coating lifts or spreads-especially on plastic spoilers and skirtings. Is this an unavoidable fact of life, or is there something that can be done to mitigate the damage on a daily driver?
@AstillDesign
@AstillDesign 4 ай бұрын
You can brush touch with some 2K clear, leave for a few days the sand with 1500-2500 then polish. We will probably do a video on doing chips and like later. Cheers H

Back in the day turtle wax was the go then came McGuire's? Think I spelt it wrong , now it's Mother's gee all I want to do is hand rub a wax onto my paint work , nothing fancy just give it that extra protection over the paint , seriously what's the best

Everyone has an opinion, and theyre likely all different. Find the one that YOU like and run with it. Dont write off the DIY ceramic coats, some of the new kits are really amazing and last a LOT longer than a good old coat of wax.

Howard as a professional detailer, the only other advice I would add is beware if f jewellery and clothing. I noticed you were wearing a big watch and pants with metal buttons. These should be avoided. Anything like belt buckles, zips, wedding rings are all coming in contact with the vehicle’s paint.
