Ability to turn legs and torso so the robot can turn 180 degrees without moving from site is very interesting. Their long time background trying to make an hydraulic robot clearly clarified them the limitations of hydraulic so they are now taking profit of what electric actuators can do, like 360 turns. Amazing they are the first who notice that while other companies are building electric humanoid robots since long time ago.
@Flyingwigs9 ай бұрын
If you look at their legacy robots, they started with gas powered hydraulic systems and progressed from there. In high load applications actuators were not up to the task yet, they eventually used them in the dog robots, but with Atlas the speed and load balancing were probably easier with hydraulics. There's likely more limitations with the new Atlas because of being strictly electric, but there's benefits as well like efficiency.

That's the key to ultimately winning the war. So they build mechs that are controlled by humans that at some point gain access to the chips. Now you got man controlled mechs that have AI chips in there brain. So now there brain can instantly access knowledge and ultimately unlocks secrets of how the universe works. But in the not so far future, we may be building "factories" designed exclusively for robots, in order to eliminate the need for humanoids in that space. I put factories in quotes because once you eliminate the need to design for humans, it opens up an enormous range of installations for which specifically designed robots are the only occupants - they never need to eat, use the restroom, answer their personal phone, or leave; they can be purpose-built to provide functionality no human could achieve. No windows, no stairs, elevators actuated by wifi links instead of buttons or speech, spaces with incredible clutter that no human could negotiate... Signs saying "NO HUMANS beyond this point ". You'd have to design repair-robots that would go in and fix broken equipment, including broken robots!

Love that these things move, like you would assume a robot would move, or should move with not replicating the limits of our joints etc. but using all degrees of freedom actuators vs muscles provide. (Personally, I think it is a tradeoff, since our movement apparatus is just ultra efficient, when it comes to energy, but of course can not provide the advantages that come with other methods like the full turn of joints etc.) PS: Am I the only one who somehow got "Lost in Space" vibes from that thing? :-D

I have been following Boston Dynamics since before petman and, I think it's phenomenal to see how far they have come. I don't think humanoids are going to be nearly as dangerous as people make them. My one worry is how humans will act towards them. I already have seen people steal, manipulate, destroy scooters and things like that put in the public eyes. I have no doubt people will try to create problems on purpose to make these machines out to be damming. However the one thing we have problems with is the loss of jobs factors created by these robots. There needs to be several people working on a balance for this issue. Where are we going to come up with space for all the humans laid off because of this. Still I am excited for a future with these machines doing jobs in the public eyes.

It's certainly impressive what Boston Dynamics has accomplished. Part of me thanks, and maybe kinda hopes, that mundane things like battery life and the cost of a unit will limit the application for a while. A balance definitely will need to be found. It has the potential to put a lot of power in the hands of a very few. Plus millions of unemployed and disenfranchised people with nothing to lose can't result in anything good.

First, this is impressive work from Boston Dynamics again. Second, i have mixed feelings about the humanoid shape, and BD clearly feels the same despite the messaging. It is a huge mistake to build a robot that has the same capabilities and limitations as humans, which is what a humanoid robot is. This robot goes beyond humanoid with its grippers and 360-degree joints, but why stop there? Why not put cameras all the way around the head? Then it would not have to rotate its head. An eye is expensive, but a camera is not. Why limitations the cameras to the head? Why not cameras on the feet or grippers? Same with other sensors such as microphones. Why not wheels on its feet? This way it could roll fast on flat surfaces (99% of the time) and use its legs on rugged terrains and stairs. Why not have telescopic arms? What about small detachable robots that could take off from the mother robot and explore inaccessible spaces. Why not three or four arms, or three legs? All these suggestions seem obvious, but they make the robot less human. It is important to not be limited by the humanoid shape. Let's not forget that the most commercially successful Boston Dynamics robot is a four-legged creature, not a humanoid. Dogoid?

I hope Elon takes a notice on this. Especially concerning the ability to rotate all limbs and body in many different ways. This is an excellent feature, which I have been thinking that should be built into the robots for some time. I just wish I could be part of the Robotic Team at Tesla. I have so many ideas that no one seems to be considering.

The barista's, waiters and waitresses, clerks at your local grocery stores? I just don't know if this is the best direction for the world to move towards. We are already having issues with AI generated, false statements from world leaders. And they are very difficult for the ordinary persons to recognize.

@@mygirldarby True, they don't. Some companies will release conceptual videos though. I'm just saying, as someone who works in video production, that there are some artificial elements to it. Ignore the robot for a second... Watch the camera motion. Particularly the strange sweep up in the last second or two. If the robot and background are real, then they must have added an artificial "hand held" camera motion to the footage, which is a simple plug-in on most NLE editors. Look at the lighting on the robot... Doesn't it look a little bright compared to the environment? I'm not saying this is definitely CGI, but it looks artificial. There's something off about it.

One thing I noticed, was the arms. They appeared to function the same way facing both directions - being able to move and function the same while facing forwards and backwards. They both are built the same, but in the video one is turned one way while the other is turned the opposite, yet moved the same as you would expect a person to move. This is truly amazing work.
