To me, Brad’s death is one of the saddest things in rock history. It hit me hard. To have that voice and end up feeling totally alone is heartbreaking. Yes, we can analyze all we want, but Brad truly sang from his heart. He is the voice of a generation. RIP

Marianne was Tom Scholz’ cousin. She used to babysit him when he was little. Little Tommy had a crush on Marianne. Then he grew up, and Tom’s crush slipped away. Brad is the best voice in classic rock ever. He was a tender man and never had any air of narcissism a lot of rock stars exhibit. That tender heart took him away from us far too soon! Great break down in how Brad brings life into that song, I was shocked he once said the "More than a feeling" was a very hard song to sing live. On KZbin, there are some live concerts, I watched where he actually turned the highest part of the song after the guitar solo where he sings "SHE SLIPPED AWAAAAY, over to FRAN COSMO, he said Fran sings higher than he does, wow he knew his limits and respected other people's talents, Brad actually left a lesson in being humble too, THANKS KEN.

I read that before he committed suicide, he was being pressured to go back on the road with Boston, but he knew he couldn’t hit those notes anymore and he didn’t have the confidence to go out there. But that was just part of the stress he was under at the time. There were other, more personal, issues going on in his life too. But yes, I’ve seen some of those live performances and they aren’t great. He was either having a bad day, or he couldn’t sing live the way he sang in the studio. I think it’s a great idea to have someone else sing the very high notes for you if you’re not able to do it anymore, rather than pushing yourself and failing. 🩷 R.I.P. Brad Delp. We love you. 🩷 (Tom, you’re hot shit too, obviously.) 😝

Their first album is simply a masterpiece. I understand why it took a while to record. Not a single track is wasted. Even the acoustic playing rhythm along with the electric chugging during the chorus gives it this (meaty?) sound. Good catch, the electric guitar along with the vocals on a couple parts matching Brad's vibrado is super tight and adds to the power of the song. While I love this song, my favorite from their debut is Hitch a Ride....

I think it should also be added, that this was recorded in a basement project studio into a lot of homemade gear. There's a golden tone to Brad's sound that sounds untouchable, regardless of gear. No computers. No punching in tons of notes or fixing pitches. It's just him, and he's multitracking like a machine. Those aren't duplicated tracks, that's Brad nailing double after double with insane precision. And if you listen to the original demos (you can find them here on KZbin), you can hear he does even crazier harmonies on the end of the song.

When I learned how these were done, I was blown away. Tom had only been playing about a year (iirc) when he played and recorded every part except drums and singing. Then layered Brad's vocals to sound out of this world lol. It's only the last track that was done in a pro studio. I always found the history of their music fascinating, and from his telling sounds a bit like an introvert lol. Nothing short of a musical genius 😊

It's funny that after all the years of listening to this song and many others, you are saying what I've said about a lot of vocal performances. I've always heard the incredible dynamics, the soft and light vocal parts only to have a lot of power brought in when needed. This confirms what my ears have been telling me my whole life. I really appreciate that. I've written a few songs in that "Boston" mode and have relied on the music a lot to be the real power. Vocals are supposed to be beautiful, no matter what style or technique...this is just my personal belief. Brad Delp exemplified that like few others have. That's why he has always been one of my top five favorite vocalists of all time and one of my biggest influences.

That was brilliantly done, top marks. Just wanted to add as well. When Rick Beato did his analysis of this song, he was blown away how Brad Delp was able to harmonise with an Electric Guitar which is towards the end of the song. To be honest I dont know any singers that can harmonise with an Electric Guitar the way Brad has done in this song. Brad Delps range is phenomenal. Plus, the harmonising in More Than A Feeling is just breath taking. What Tom Sholz has done with Boston is pure genius. I read the story on him and how he actually started with the band Boston. If people get a chance to read Toms story, its definitely worth the read, you wont be disappointed. I also had no idea that this song in particular is the hardest song to sing in Rock N Roll history. Ken: You have opened up a whole new world for me vocally......Although I sometimes used it, I never really understood what head voice was. To me, it was either belting it out (chest voice), or full falsetto. I sang professionally thru the 90’s never knowing I could reach notes that I thought were other worldly w/ head voice (and you prove here in your videos that these incredible vocalists use head voice a lot to reach those other worldly highs). You are a masterful & FUN teacher!!! Thank you!!

Not to denigrate your study of the vocals in any way, but for me the most amazing thing about this song is the mix. Held vocal notes magically become guitars or keyboards. Amazing.

No dissing of the song whatsoever, a classic, that's just more technically understood. I admire the talent to produce it, and your talent for explaining it to someone like me, that knows basically nothing in singing. Those with talent will of course understand the rest of what you do. Thanks for posting.

According to producer John Boylan Brad hit the high notes in this song with ease and did not need to use any studio wizardry or studio tricks to pull of his parts. Boylan stated that Brad was quick in the studio and that Brad got things right quickly with minimal takes. Boylan saw that Brad was world class talent by any measure.

Boston was one of my favorite bands growing up and Brad Delp's voice was a large part of that. Thanks for breaking down the brilliance of his voice. I only wish he'd had a better career and lived a long happy life, but fate intervened and the story ends very sadly. How Boston isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (i.e. Jann's Hall of Friends) astonishes me. Without them, so many acts of the late 70s-80s would have never have been--Journey for one.

Brad had such power and control over so much range he could do that belt to soft singing (or vice versa) in a way that was almost inhuman! The long sustained voices at the end was for sure a cross-fade of the grouped dry and heavy/long wet reverb return. I believe there’s also a flange effect on that fade out to. That was many times done with two tape machines and a soft intermittent touch on one of the turning reals although Tom loved his gadgets to so it could have been an actual timebaced effect processor.

Even without all the layers he sounds amazing. Still my favorite singer of all time, though now I get to hear him without all the bells and whistles lol. Listening to it gave me chills and some tears. His voice may not be perfect, but it is angelic. Found myself crying throughout the video though. For some reason his death hits harder now than it did at that time (I was about 17 then). Loved hearing all the many Brads as backing though lol. I hadn't realized it was all him, so definitely fascinating. And that little "oooh-oooh-oooh" before the chorus, I never even noticed cause the guitar drowns it out, sadly. I've been in awe of his voice for years, and even now I am still. I liked hearing you match it too, that's always fun. Great video Ken, even though I couldn't stop crying lol 😊 RIP Brad 💐

Back in 1976, When the first Boston album came out. There was no digital, auto tune or sampling. What you hear is naked, completely exposed singing by Brad Delp. I saw him with Beatle Juice and he was incredible. He mastered Paul and John’s voice. They played these very small bars and even High schools. No computers. Nothing to enhance his voice. So when you think for a second that he can be copied, Forget it!!!! Brad Delp got his voice from God himself. I heard the first song off the first Boston album when I was just shy of sixteen.. I jumped on my bicycle and peddled to the record store to buy it. Like so many other artist from my time, The music lives on... Because it was MUSIC!!!!

Ken describing the first verse: "You really get the intimacy of that feeling." Me watching: Why yes, but it's MORE than a feeling isn't it? 😂 Couldn't resist the joke Ken, in all seriousness though I really enjoy these isolated vocal breakdowns, it really helps one understand all of the different dynamics and nuances in these famous voices that you can't always hear over the studio productions. I suggest doing Steve Perry, Peter Cetera, or Chester Bennington next! It would be interesting to hear you dissect these amazing voices 💯❤

You usually get a story from me behind the artist/band when I comment, so here goes. Many moons ago when this album debuted, my buddy sets me up with his girlfriend’s friend. I love the break-down Ken. You make very good points. Brad had a very awesome voice, Tom Scholz was the brain behind all of it as well as great guitar work. The best point that You made here is that Brad put a lot of feeling in this song without belting it. Showing what true artists he and the rest of the band really are. I am a heavy, die-hard Boston fan. Good video. Thank you.
