Boston fans respond to Montreal fans booing the US National Anthem - by giving the Canadian National Anthem a standing ovation. This took place in April 2004, in Game 5 of the playoffs.

As an American, I am glad when we react with class to a deliberate insult. I believe during a Red Wing game, there was some disrespect years ago when O, Canada was sung. However, the real measure of our Canadian allies was proven during the 9/11 attacks. The Canadians immediately offered to land all international flights on their soil in one of the most historically selfless acts by an ally. One entire town, Gander, hosted 7,000 stranded passengers enroute to the United States. The citizens opened their homes, literally, to these people. The Canadians are not only great neighbors, but true friends and allies. Thank you, again.

What people love to ignore, especially bruin fans, is that this boo'ing happened not long after Chara tried taking Pacioretti's head off intentionally. What the Habs fans were Boo'ing was Chara's face popping up on the jumbotron, I know because I was there, and no, I didn't boo, but I laugh at how clingy the bruin fans are to accuse Habs fans of boo'ing the anthem when in reality, it was Chara.

Disrespect of any anthem only reflects on you, it shows you have no respect, class, or regard for others and yourself. Also many french people feel they have gained the respect and status they deserve with many canadians. There history and language is required learning, They hold many seats in government and the whole country pays attention to how they vote as much as Ontario, the most populated province in the country.

VancouverChokers I'll respond to your comment since it's most reasonable. Now I believe Montreal is a very political city. If memory serves me correctly this was around the Iraq invasion and the whole talk about WMDs. So with an already hatred for Boston, then add in a "phoney" war, well you saw the result. I agree booing a national anthem is shameful. Whether it be hockey, baseball, even the Olympics, keep politics out of it. I think Islander fans also did this once. Their club had to release a statement, to also remind their fans that Canadians also play for their team.

The U.S.1980 Olympic win over the Soviets was a victory of true amateurs--STUDENTS, no less!--against the awesome USSR hockey machine, a team that went on tour and embarrassed several NHL teams in a pre-Olympics tour, for crying out loud. Please get back on your meds.

ARE YOU FOR REAL?!!! Back in a time when "The Soviet Army" were beating the shit out out of North American Teams the "Miracle On Ice" highly topped every accomplishment in the history of U.S. Olympic Hockey, including beating those same Ruskies 20 years beforehand at Squaw Valley for another Gold Medal. There, I gave you two events more historic to U.S. Hockey than their 1996 Victory against Canada. The last time they met in an exhibition before the 1980 Winter Olympics, The Soviet Union beat the shit out of the U.S. 10-3, go figure! No Red-Blooded American(Even Myself) ever thought that it would be possible after that sound defeat. In fact those American relaxed a bit against West Germany in their Final Game before The Medal Round(To avoid playing The Soviets) down 2-0 at the end of the 1st Period. Coach Herb Brooks saw this and lit a fire under Team USA and they responded with 4 Goals in the next Two Periods to win 4-2.

Doing a standing ovation when you don't give a fuck about it, is worse in my opinion than just saying nothing. People who booed the American national anthem are not smart people nor they are true fans of Hockey. True hockey fans would respect each teams and nation. Just see it that way also: what if the Habs fans had done the opposite? Giving a standing ovation instead of booing? The Boston fans would have said that we were laughing about the anthem. In any way, ennemies will see everything you do as an insult. Or, should I say, they will find anything to say that it is an insult. We can't get away with it. And yeah, I am a true Habs fan, and I do respect a lot the American National anthem. Maybe more than the Canadian anthem! When they will have a Québec national anthem, that will be my best. Haha.

Dale Thompson nah, 75% of the league is American or Canadian. There are players from just 17 countries, 4 of those countries have one player, another 5 countries have a combined 22. Hence why we don't play their anthems. If they don't like the NHL only playing its region's dominant anthems then they can head back to Europe and play there.

In my opinion, this had nothing to do with trolling, it had more to do with showing class and respect after being disrespected. Bruin fans could have reacted disrespectfully themselves but took the high road instead. Perhaps with a bit of sarcasm thrown in of course!
