Absolutely love these travel guides all the critical info delivered with great personality (and no usual self indulgent you tubbing in sight!). We watched all the ones for the US before we left Australia and we've used them again as a little intro into each city. Would be great to hear more about nightlife and some cool activities. You should definitely do a show in Melbourne Australia! Thanks again 😊

visit the suburbs. The Boston area is unique because of the way it developed, which is different from other parts of America. A lot of the suburbs developed at the same time as Boston, as opposed to developing as a result of Boston. this means that A lot of these surrounding cities have their own very unique culture and can be just as fun to explore as Boston. They are cheaper too, because they aren't as big as Boston. you can take the commuter rail to visit some of these places. I'd recommend: From South Station, Plymouth (Plymouth line), Quincy (Plymouth/ Kingston Line, as well as Braintree- bound red line trains) and from North Station: Salem (Rockport/ Newburyport line), Gloucester (Rockport line), and Newburyport (Newburyport Line). All of these places have a really vibrant restaurant scene and rich history. fares are about $10 per person on the commuter rail, and all of the cities are pretty walkable.

I completely second that. Even Cambridge and Sommerville have so much to offer (though Salem is also amazing). The neat thing about Boston is that you can walk (yes, walk) from MIT in Cambridge to the north shore of Boston in about a half-hour. It's an extremely walkable area.

Thanks for this video! We used your advice and took the Silver to South Station, then got the T right to our hotel. We mostly walked after that. We also booked Sunday brunch at Stephanie's on Newbury based on your recommendation, and didn't regret it. Of course, since I'm originally from the East Coast, Dunkin Donuts was a daily stop.(regular has always meant "with cream and sugar" to me!) My only regret is not getting to Clink for a drink. Next time.

Native New Englander/Mid-Atlantic person, and longtime Attache viewer, usually always use Attache videos as the underpinning of my strategic plan just before departure and in long-term location research. Probably the best macro review of locations anywhere on the internet, and reat for final prep prior to arrival. I moved to Boston in March 2022. A lot of this video still holds up quite well. A few updates to note as of August 2022 include. 1. Uber is ubiquitous and taxi's are nearly nonexistent. I am a junior executive at a large Boston nonprofit, and handle travel frequently for the Executive team, in addition to my own work travel which has really ramped up since May 2022, and is only accelerating since then. Taxi's are usually cheaper in off-times (think eaarly morning, and late evening), but Ubers are cheaper at every other time. 2. Logan still has terrible parking and woeful connectivity to Downtown, despite being in downtown Boston. It also has very limited restaurants, and all are pricey. 3. Boston is pricey, everything costs something, it doesn't even matter. Ubering from the outskirts (Brighton/Cambridge/Newton) is costly. Typical fare from Brighton to Logan is around $40/$50 in 2022 dollars. 4. the MBTA (aka the 'T') really fell off since the pandemic. the Green and Orange line are closed until Oct. 2022, and have had ludacris mishaps and failures since 2020. Trains with conductors still on-board have run away (brake failures) on multiple occasions since 2022 began. Orange line subways/trains and a few buses in depots have caught fire for no apparent reason. Moral of point 4, do not, under any circumstance rely on theT to be an option nor to deliver. It is cheap, but when it often goes wrong,alternative options are astronomically expensive. 5. Boston is absolutely not worth visiting if not on business travel or on a long layover. It will cost a fortune, there's about three days worth of things to do, see, or eat, and the traffic is horrendous so only plan one to three trips per day if relying on uber, lyft, or taxi. Public transport is mostly busses and still subject to traffic like all other cars. 6. Outside of DC, Boston is probably the next best long layover destination if continuing on to somewhere else. Logan is in the middle of the city, and via car/uber/taxi/lyft extremely close. On a day or so long layover, the pricey nature isn't really a factor, and there is enough to do near downtown and near Logan that it's not too difficult to leave, explore, and then return for your next segment

In Canada, we generally tip around what the tax amount was (13-15% depending on province), you can tip more, obviously. I oftentimes feel the need to tip higher in the US, as I hear the norm is 15-18%. It's a little annoying, but that's also partially because my CAD is worth so little at the moment 😬. Thanks for the advice on adding a tip to the bill and that it should be 15%. Question ..... how much should I tip for services who do not have a bill for example, a porter or bell boy? Thanks
@notthegoatseguy6 жыл бұрын
15-20% (really should be 20. Boston has the second worst housing market in the US, right behind San Fran, which is currently the most expensive in the world) when you are at a sit-down restaurant where you are being served directly. I also add $2 per alcoholic drink (servers often have to tip out to a bartender) for the first drink, and $1 per drink after that per person. Be more generous if you are asking for a very special or specific cocktail or whatnot. Many of the more reasonably priced hotels won't even have a porter or bell boy. If you are staying at a 4-5 star hotel, I'd start at $5 and add a dollar per bag if it is more than a couple. Concierge: $5 the first time, $2-3 every use after. Maid: $5 per day at a moderately priced hotel. $10 if staying at 4-5 star. Leave a note on the pillow saying "For Service") Taxis (don't take taxis in Boston, they are very, very expensive) or rideshare: I'd stick with 10-15%. Rideshare (Uber, Lyft, etc...) really are underpaid when you break it all down. If my trip is $12 I'm definitely tipping $3. Cafes or really any restaurant where you order at a desk/counter and you grab the food yourself: There may or may not be a tip jar or a tip option for your credit card. You can leave a buck or two but aren't obligated to, but it does help the workers out. The good news is Boston has a great public transit system with buses, BRT, bike shares, commuter trains serving the metro area, and a subway for the city and nearby suburbs. And it is so walkable. you may never have to use a taxi, you can carry the bags yourself, and a concierge is nice and all but the Yelp app works on your phone.
