Its fantastic, isn't it. The pupil is clearly a reserved kind of person and finds his ebullient manner and even the things he is saying, difficult, even intimidating, to begin with. But, as someone says further down this thread, to get beyond mere technical proficiency, as a musician, you simply have to get rid fo that reserve - when you're playing anyway. To give her her due, she really tries to follow what he is telling her even though she is obviously sceptical. And then something magical happens. The audience notice the difference in her playing even before she does. And then she realises what is happening, that this madman may be right, despite her reservations, and grows into it. And she goes from a chrysalis to a butterfly - just like he says.

I've been watching a lot of these masterclasses lately, but this one is truly special....it really looks like one of my own lessons when I was studying piano. My teacher was as excited and madly in love with music as Mr. Zander, sometimes she was even more extreme - dancing around the room, stomping feet, singing loudly. She really pulled me out of my impossible shyness and insecurity, layer after layer, year after year. I didn't choose music as my career, but those years shaped the person I am now and I will cherish them for life. Thank you so much for these videos

This masterclass demonstrates and explains very clearly the various reasons why musicians are commonly stereotyped as being depressed and temperamental. They train themselves to deliver things that are not supposed to be happening in people's daily lives, making it happen at all times.

This is beyond amazing. So simple, so fundamentally true. « Regular life does not produce this ». This is the ONLY reason we (including amateurs like me) started to play music. But it can get lost along the way, buried under the quest for technical perfection, execution details, culture, peer pressure, need to excel, competition, whatever gets in the way. And this crazy guy, this grandpa we’d all like to have says it with so much passion, knowledge, commitment… I cried a few times watching this.

Needs an orchestra, it's not just about the soloist however good, Haydn wrote both cello concerti as " give aways " for musicians leaving but he wasn't going to leave the rest of the orchestra out of the fun. Both concerti lost until around 1970 when the scores turned up.

I am wondering how much teaching is responsible for producing musicians who lack showmanship and story-telling. Zander is constantly mentoring these young musicians in that way. Are they being taught to "play the notes"?

I used to teach guitar and the biggest hurdle with most of my students was they didn't know how to practice. Once they followed the regimes I set for them they became fast learners and then It was down to how many hrs per day they were willing to put in. After everything they would do well to watch and try to understand what Ben Zanders was getting at with Yuri. He really amazes me all the time. This lesson makes me want to take Cello lessons...lol as I really love the sound of the thing along with the Viola

Teachers tend to focus on technique because its easier to teach and more black and white. I"ve had teachers who dwelled on expression but that amount of time was less than 1%. When I took Comedy Improv for fun it opened me to the possibilities in music.
