You've been busy! Totally agree about Ace Attorney 1. It can feel like a slog, and it's a very long slog at that. 6:47 I spy with my little eye a Lily's eye. Look at her, living the best comfy life. Random cuddles included. I remember playing Circle of the Moon on the orginal GBA trying to make it through the game and dropping it 'cause I couldn't see a thing. Then, years later, on a shining GBA SP, the game finally made sense to me, with its colors and so on... I remember it as a nice entry in the 6 2D portable games after Symphony of the Night and a return to the old whip gameplay. All those entries in the series have grinding, it doesn't matter if it's for cards, abilities dropping as souls from monsters, money to buy stuff and so on. Maybe it hasn't aged that well?

Hope Lily feels better after her dental surgery. It's good to know she has a caring & attentive owner. I, too, have been playing Open Roads, i find the story, animation of the characters very flat & lifeless & the interactive elements extremely bare bones. I also played Harold Halibut, which i enjoyed for its claymation graphical style , characters, humour, & heart to be charming & most endearing. As far as walking simulators go, i enjoyed the Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Dordogne, Firewatch, and the Walking Dead season 1.
@CheddahSlammer8 ай бұрын
I find it interesting to get a different perspective on walking sims here, because most of the big walking Sims fans don't like any stray from just walking sim. Many of them were praising Open Road for going back to the basics, and not doing what they consider extra that takes them out of the Narrative. Personally for me my favorite walking sims are, Draugen, The Unfinished Swan, and Journey.

Relatable as usual. :) I beat Unicorn Overlord a week or two ago and then they released the 1.04 patch that added post-game content so I beat some of it - then Eiyuden Chronicle came out and I’ve been playing that since. I enjoyed Unicorn Overlord as well. For me, the last continent (not including finishing the last part of Cornia) took the longest so I’d say you have a ways to go. I spent a lot of time on completely optional stuff so my playthrough was over 100 hours instead of the more common 40-50 hours. I appreciated what you said about Circle of the Moon and Ace Attorney. There’s no reason to force yourself to finish games you aren’t enjoying. I haven’t played Circle of the Moon yet even though I have the collection so I can’t comment on that, but regarding movement speed I’ll give you the heads up that the first hours of Eiyuden Chronicle have a low movement speed that made me worry… until I got an accessory in an abandoned mine that made my character move at a normal speed and I breathed a sigh of relief. I wasn’t sure about the game at first but it really picked up 8-12 hours in and I’ve been enjoying it. As far as Ace Attorney, while I enjoyed the games a lot (I just have to turn off the legal realism part of my brain growing up in a family of lawyers) I agree that auto-advance would be really helpful and I totally understand not enjoying Japanese visual novels. Personally, the Ace Attorney ones are some of the only ones I’ve enjoyed so far and I think that many of them (especially the story modes in Persona 4 Arena/Arena Ultimax) would benefit greatly from massive edits and being more succinct. As a silly aside, my first exposure to the Persona series was the Persona 4 Arena game - which spoiled tons of plot points and for both Persona 4 and Persona 3 and drove me nuts with the excessive narration and repetition. But I went on to buy Persona 2 EP, Persona 3 FES, Persona 4 and Persona 5 and 5 Royal after that and have enjoyed them, so at least it got me into the series.
@Cannotbetamed18 ай бұрын
When I did an ad for Unicorn Overlord they gave me talking points and one was that it was 30-40 hours of gameplay. I was foolish and believed this number, my game is going to be so much more than that.

Sorry to hear it's been a dud-filled month for you, but glad to hear that Lily's doing well; an ailing pet can be a real downer. Though I do like Circle of the Moon, it's easily my least favorite of the Platventure-style Castlevania games; there is a hack I'd like to try that places cards around the map, so you don't have to farm them, but that doesn't change the fact that the level design is a little off, and Dracula's final form SUCKS, to say nothing of the arena. I usually finish off Dracula by spamming the thunderbird summon to avoid dealing with his short vulnerability window, and if you don't have the cards for that, you can activate any card combination, pause while Nathan's glowing, then choose the cards you want (whether or not you actually have them), and that will still give you the combination, because of when and how the activation works; I've been told that this bug wasn't fixed for the collection. If you care about closure, that is; Aria of Sorrow is much better, and Harmony of Dissonance is my favorite. This month, I'm at the part of my backlog where I go through games I've finished and wrap up anything I didn't totally complete in them, so by April 4th, I'd finished my last playthrough of Ys Origin, gotten the missing weapons in Ys: Memories of Celceta, and the final ending in Timespinner... then spent almost the entire rest of the month on Yakuza 0, which I managed to finish one day before the end of the month, even beating the optional superbosses with a busted controller, since the PC version screws with the inputs on just about everything that isn't a Logitech F-310. On Laundry Day, I've been playing the Secret of Mana: Climate Crisis hack; don't know if you're a fan of the original, or if you do the rom hack thing, but it is EXCELLENT; lots of really cool changes, though it certainly is a bit harder.

Hey Pam gave you thumbs up just for Lily's progress. Hope she's getting better. Honestly I can't blame you on Circle of the Moon. When it came out it was a step back from compared to Symphony of the Night, yet it was on GBA so it had limitations. I actually quit playing it and then finally came back to beat it years later. It is tricky and you need some patience on the farming and leveling up, especially when collecting certain rare cards and rare items/armor. You need these to help you beat Dracula much easier. ( The more Luck you have the more it helps on item drops. ) I hope you got back to Circle of the Moon and beat it. The ending is worth it. Just take it in strides and don't give up. I also LOVE the Ace Attorney series. Its better to play the DS versions of the first 3 games. I just prefer the pixel art better along with the soundtracks. I hope you give it another chance sometime. It has a wonderful story, lots of anime style humor, and it has lots of surprises. Yeah, I’ve never been able to get into Circle of the Moon either, for the same reasons you listed. Ditto Ace Attorney. There’s just too much talking and not enough gameplay. Even the court trials have too much back and forth, not letting you present the evidence you have until the predetermined moment, even if it’d answer one of the earlier discussed accusations. A Japanese visual novel/adventure game I DO recommend are the two AI The Somnium Files games. There’s more investigation and gameplay in those, with tons of branching paths. And the writing is much stronger. Gives me big Snatcher, anime cyberpunk vibes.

A lot of people (some serious Vania Heads even) say that they love Circle of the Moon. As someone that plays as much Castlevania as I can get my hands on (of all eras, sub-genres, etc.) I still don't like it either. :D I've given it multiple chances, and while I can see some somewhat novel systems at play, it just doesn't flow like others, and doesn't feel very good to play. Those are pretty important with a game like this. I would probably give it the edge over any of the 2.5D or 3D games (just because I don't like those either) but it's more or less at the bottom of the 2D barrel for me. As a point of reference, I'd say Rondo is my favorite, followed closely by Symphony, followed by Super, then the DS games, then the other GBA games, then Chronicles, then the NES games, then MSX, Arcade, etc. Then Circle of the moon, then the 2.5/3D games. :D

The original Hammerwatch is actually the game that drew me into the Roguelike genre. I received it as part of a Humble Bundle back when I was mostly playing indies on my low-to-mid grade gaming laptop and got really hooked on the gameplay loop. It was simple but enjoyable, and the game was pretty easy to finish with a defined ending. Heroes of Hammerwatch was heavier on the typical Roguelike elements and I still had enough fun with it to put in tens of hours. Something about the gameplay appeals to me, even as a Paladin. The upgrades are incremental but still satisfying. That said, I never reached the end. There's just WAY more content than the original game. Hammerwatch 2 has mixed reviews and sounds like a departure from what I liked about OG Hammerwatch so unfortunately I'll probably skip it, at least for now.

Harmony was way worse, I hated the last 75%+ of the game. Phoned-in boring unbalanced rubbish. Iga obviously didn't know what made SotN good and didn't really get it right again until DoS. Him striking Circle from canon then copying the DSS system for AoS's TSS is so pathetic. I'm still mad about it lol. That was a lot of acronyms 😅 I liked the original Hammerwatch a long time ago, 2013 according to Steam. I only like a few VNs, look at "7 Years From Now" or "One Thousand Lies". Also the VNs by sleepyagents are weird and fascinating, and very short which is nice.

Regarding your point about walking simulators (6:30), I've noticed it too. Maybe the budget required to push the genre forward is too much for indie studios. But other game genres have absorbed the positive things about walking sims, just like the many triple-A games that have borrowed from point-and-click adventure elements. In Starfield, there is a 2-3 hour long side quest called "First Contact," in which you go onboard a spaceship and explore its huge surroundings and talk to the astronauts who are lost in space and can't find anywhere to land. You find old MacIntosh computers and VHS tapes on the ship, indicating "old Earth" origin. You try to broker a deal for them so they can land. The entire quest is almost all dialog-driven. This has the making of a nice walking sim game, but then no indie studio could ever have Starfield's budget. (Starfield is kind of unpopular right now, as you know; but this quest is among a few bright spots in the game.)

Always look forward to the monthly update from Pam! I only had one pickup in April and that was Stellar Blade. But since I am still (still...stiiilllll) working on FF7 Rebirth I haven't tried it yet. Helldivers 2 keeps getting in the way of finishing Rebirth. It's just too much fun and sucks me in and then before I know it, game time is over and life beckons and I haven't played any Rebirth. At about 128 hours on Helldivers 2 now and 121 hours on FF7 Rebirth. Hoping to finish it this weekend.

As a big Castlevania fan, I would also rank Circle near the bottom above only Simon's Quest. But while Simon's Quest suffers more from poor execution and unrealized potential, I think Circle is simply a mediocre game with little inspiration and bad play control.

you MIGHT, just maybe possibly might enjoy Great Ace Attorney more (it has auto-advance). many of the complaints you levy against Ace1 are still there in Great Ace Attorney, but maybe the historical setting and, to me, better overall characters and intrigue, might pull you through. but EVERY ace attorney game is overly long-winded, like there's always like 20% that could've been cut.

I'm currently playing fallout 4, gotta say fallout 3 made me feel more involved than 4 does, but I'm only 3 hours in, I just feel like I haven't even found a town to shop at yet, fallout 3 introduced you to a town and everything was like oh nice, this ones just like ok go help other settlers now. maybe I'm missing a key part I tend to do that, but I'm having less fun than fallout 3, hey here's a town, here's something to do, here's another thing blow up that town that helped you. etc

Is very refreshing how much you care for your dog.

I'm about to finish Spider-Man 2. I'm pretty sick of the game and just finishing it because I'm at 89% completion and might as well complete it. The thing just feels too generic for me.

Oh I'm late to the party All right so this month I have been playing in stars and time and it's pretty good so hear me out have a seat listen you're going to roll your eyes but bear with me it starts like a JRPG but then turns into a time loop game now I know you're going to roll your eyes because listen I've been there we've all played 12 minutes and we all played the hidden City we've all played the outer wilds but this game I thought was pretty well written and it goes into some deep psychological horror and the other thing is it really kind of captures the sort of mundane nature of the grind so I recommend if you play it maybe throw on a podcast if you get up to loop 60 or 50. Also I haven't played it yet but I picked up animal well I'll let you know if that's any good mostly been playing helldivers 2. I think that's about it we got some good games coming out though I want to get crow country and that Sherlock Holmes VR game

Oh yeah, I played the prologue to In Stars and Time (Start Again), and it was great. I also started Animal Well yesterday and I'm loving it.

I loved Circle of the Moon. I play a lot of fighters so double tapping to run was whatever, how you feel about it is how I feel about Harmony of Dissonance. I don't like that game at all, it's my least favorite of the GBA and DS games. I'm not big on visual novels either..region doesn't matter. I see the appeal a little bit but they put me to sleep, haha.
