Thank you for sharing this part of your collection. I now have 4 Neos and plan to try them in kokedama pots. Crazy how the terra cotta pots are 5x the price of normal terra cotta pots. I'm sure they cost little more to make them.

Fabulous video. Your warning is a bit late. I was bitten by the bug in May. I only have 3 small plants but I love the leaves, the flowers, the scent and best of all I can grow them in the cool section of my greenhouse. I like that you explained why/how the variations on one plant occurs. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.

You have beautiful plants :) really enjoyed this video ! I bought my first Neofinetia maybe about 3 years ago and fell in love as soon as I had it in bloom and smelled them 🥰🤍❤ they have the most exquisite, sweet and "elegant" scent :) I personally love them mostly for the scent of their flowers and also weirdly enough I love the new grown roots haha I know have maybe around 10-13 different varieties and would love to get a couple more variegated ones but it's not easy to find them here in France and even in Europe. I tried growing a few of mine in pure pumice and the roots seemed to really like it have you tried growing them on pumice? Also how long do the blooms last for you? I would love to make the blooms last longer. I heard in semi-hydro they last longer but never tired growing them in semi-hydro .

I would love to grow these orchids and have added one, so far, to my orchid collection. These are so elegant! I must add that my Chinese zodiac sign is the Tiger and my husband's sign is the dragon. Hmmm...🙃 Thanks and ATB.

Great video, entertaining and very informative. That is one beautiful collection that you've got. They all look so happy and healthy. My favorite is Neofinetia Hisui since I love green. You have mentioned that they are on the expensive side, would you mind providing more information about average pricing of some of more popular varieties? Here in FL it's difficult to find them and if you do, they are usually of poor quality and very expensive. Thank you and once again, beautiful collection!
@botanyboy1
@botanyboy1 4 жыл бұрын
Well, as far as I know plants sold in the US or Europe are for the most part imported from Japan or Korea, and perhaps China. So you pay higher prices. Here I can buy a division with 3-4 growths of Hisui for around 3000-4000 yen. Figure you would have to pay double that in the states, so around $60 to $80 I'd guess, maybe a bit more. I'm sure some folks are propagating this species in the US, but those wouldn't be "true" fuukiran.

What a treat that was! So enjoyable! I really know nothing about them but I’ve collected about half a dozen during lockdown as an interest and they are outside on my Sydney balcony. I believe the perfume is wonderful. I’ve kept mine alive during winter and I hope they reward me by giving me a flower or two in Summer. Maybe they need to be older? Those pots! So beautiful! I don’t think you can buy them in Australia. Do you keep them damp? I’ve let mine dry out in the cold weather. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge.

Yes, in winter keep them on the dry side and cooler, but maintain high levels of humidity. In summer give them daily watering and fertilize regularly.

Thank you very much for this expected video! Very pleasant one, nice to see a collection with some aged specimen. Merci! By the way do you know how long a fuukiran can live? I saw some bug clump that had more than 40years according to their owner, I was wondering if, as bonsai, you can keep them for a lifetime. Thanks for your input on that.
@botanyboy1
@botanyboy1 4 жыл бұрын
Short answer, yes, you can keep them a lifetime. There are a number of forms of fuukiran that have been recognized for over a century, for example Seikai. As far as I know, it can only be propagated by division, so all the plants across the world today came from that first one.
@faguss297
@faguss297 4 жыл бұрын
@@botanyboy1 thank you for your answer. I also own Seikai (and Hime Seikai) as all serious fuukiran lovers I guess, and this is one of my favorite! All the more beautiful to know that it probably came from the original plant

Is there a strong correlation between red root tips and blue/purple/pink flowers? Like some orchid growers I have learned to love the roots.
@botanyboy1
@botanyboy1 4 жыл бұрын
There is no obvious correlation. Many purple to pink flowered forms have the typical "mud" color root tips. Shutennou however does have deep red root tips. All the ruby red tipped ones I've seen have white flowers. Blue flowered plants are not true fuukiran, they contain other Vanda species in their genes. Thanks for the question!

Another great video as always. Very informative. I never got bitten by the fukiran bug, but am amassing a collection of Rohdea. How many on the fukiran concepts transfer to Rohdea? It seems that variegation is much more prominent with Rohdeas.
@botanyboy1
@botanyboy1 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. I don't collect Rohdea, but I do see them here at the nurseries and in gardens. I wouldn't be surprised if the terminology for leaf shape and variegation are similar. The common wild Rohdea are rather plain looking, so I guess that is why variegated forms are more popular. Their flowers are nondescript, and though the berries are lovely, they are also pretty small and not highly variable either.

@botanyboy1
@botanyboy1 4 жыл бұрын
Try keeping it cool (below 10 C, 50 F) in the winter months and dry it off a bit, but be sure to keep humidity high year round. They like a cool, drier rest period. 2-3 months is enough.
