Neofinetia falcata have always had a special place in my heart. My first ever orchid (that I killed) and since over 35 years still always at least one plant in my collection. It also will be the last orchid I ever care for. It's tiny size, ease of care and unbelievable nice fragrance of the flowers will always have a place in my life. Here's how I care for it and some possibilities on how to grow them.

...a hat tip to your video, Marc ! As ever, so grateful. I took a beloved ramekin shell, and together with a tiny neofinetia and several special small stones (And Moss etc.) , a marvelous homage to my family’s past was created!

Thanks a lot! Neofinetia always have been my first love and at the moment my collection is growing. I've got all 3 species + numerous varieties of falcata. I will be doing more Neofinetia videos in the future. Even without flowers they are worth to look at.

Wonderful video, thank you, Marc! My Neofinetia falcata is very unhappy right now. I made the mistake not to check the media in came in, and lost most roots as a result. I repotted it in sphagnum moss to try to get it to grow roots.

Thanks, more Neofinetia videos to come with many different ways to grow them and a look at my collection soon. Watch Monday's video and don't miss the #CareCollab on it. You'll enjoy them too + more Neo vids in the near future.

Nice demo, Sir! Love the unique potting suggestions. Interesting that you say "dry out quickly", sphagnum moss stays most for so long... Maybe, not sitting in water too long?
@TOEKIEWORLDMarc
@TOEKIEWORLDMarc Жыл бұрын
I only soak the moss on very hot days. Otherwise I pray and mist. mos then dries within 2-3 hours and the mos ball is hollow so air circulation dries the out much quicker.

😮😮 what more can I say than I must do better. I love how you present yours, so unique. Those that you have secured on mounts, how do you intend to refreshen the moss and would this be done yearly? A very informative video, thank you.
@TOEKIEWORLDMarc
@TOEKIEWORLDMarc Жыл бұрын
Thanks Margaret. The moss mounts, Japanese way, are changed at least once a year in spring. When the moss doesn't look good in Autumn, I refresh it then too. Forgot to mention that. The moss on mounts, whatever shape is is pulled out with tweezers and is replaced if needed. Moss is removed when wet and the rest rinsed off.

Lovely video Marc and the way you grow them on and in ornamental pits and other things is amazing, they look as they are coming along nicely. I am moving away from just moss this year and they chilled down nicely this winter so fingers crossed.

Thanks Lynn. Under your growing conditions, just course bark would certainly be fine, Even lava rock, although heavy. Growing in moss is fine but you need to do it so they can have a quick wet/dry cycle of the roots. That's where many people go wrong, overwatering them. I filmed this last August but only now got to posting it. I have a few more plants and all 3 species! Ill show more on the Neo's in the coming weeks and months, including a Carecollab vid with Ninja_orchids again. I hope to get some flowers too later this season because it's still really cold here and they've been outside all winter (sheltered). My Sarcochilus only now start putting out spikes but not all of them yet and it's already the end of April !!!

Nice video, thanks! Very informative. Love the way they look mounted in those special pots. I might have to get one of these plants to give it a go, would love to smell the fragrance. I wonder if they’d like it outdoors here in the Netherlands, but I’m guessing the humidity might be too low for them.

I'm in northern Belgium and mine are all out side, sheltered from sun at the moment. I'm thinking of showing my outdoor growing area soon. Neofinetia always have been my passion and if you would love to try a well grown one, order from Akerne orchids in Belgium. They have top quality plants. I also use their Rain Mix as my only fertilizer. www.akerne-orchids.com/nl/ Of to repot some new ones now 🤪

@@TOEKIEWORLDMarc Ooh that is great! Are they out all year round? I use rain mix as well, but haven’t ordered plants from them yet. I will give that a try and order one from there for sure, I see they have one with a nice purple coloration. How many different neofinitia do you currently have? I’d love to see a tour of your outdoor area, I will be taking notes for sure, haha!

@@BlaisZeroni They are outside until temps drop below 8°C at night, then they come inside in a cool attic room at min. 8°C at night, 12-14 during the day and under lights. There they stay until spring. At the moment I have around 30 different varieties but a lot more plants. I also have the rare Neofinetia richardsiana and the extremely rare (in captivity) Neofinetia xichangensis. If you order a Neo from Akerne, go for certainly go for the Hisui §green flowers, the larger one (€ 25) these are multi-growth, flowering size plants. Make a vid of your orchids too! Always interesting.

Nice and informative video, and I like the music you used, thanks so much for sharing. My news don't bloom for me and I think it's because I grow them indoors and they don't get cool enough. How do you provide this for yours?
@TOEKIEWORLDMarc
@TOEKIEWORLDMarc Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mary. If grown indoors, move them to a cooler room for 6 to 12 weeks during winter. Something like a bedroom or a like. When cooler, they need less water. I only spray them 2 or 3 times a week then. We had a fairly mild winter and left them out sheltered from high wind and rain this year, with hardly any watering and they are fine. You can still cool them down now so you might have flowers this summer.
