Hi Luxeria, I just wanted to clarify something there is a major difference between wanting to get some plastic surgery, a little lift, some bigger boobs, one maybe two small procedures for small improvements & Body Dysmorphia Disorder. BDD is a constant drive for perfection & NEVER being able to achieve it, being willing to do dangerous things & feeling like you just need this one thing, one more thing & after that one thing there's this euphoria that lasts for sometimes a few months, weeks, days even just hours before those feelings of ugliness & imperfection sink back in. These can lead to eating disorders, looking for adrenaline rushes for happiness, addiction & agoraphobia because it can be so severe people actually think they are so unattractive they don't want to leave their home. It doesn't matter how many people tell them how beautiful or attractive they are it takes deep psychological work & often medication but some can improve without it but no amount of love, surgery or weight loss will ever be enough.

I'm completely shocked at the statement "men don't have breast tissue" Men can get breast cancer and its hard enough to get them to check themselves and go to the doc without professionals on the TV telling them they don't have breast tissue! Medical misinformation can be so dangerous.

That’s so ignorant someone would be even say that. I work in the medical field (I’m behind a computer all day) and there are diagnosis codes for male breast cancer. If it’s in the diagnosis coding book (we call it ICD 10, or 11) it’s happened thousands or even millions of times.

I feel like there’s a strong difference between body dysmorphic disorder and the common everyday insecurities that everybody has. As someone with diagnosed BDD I recognize that everybody around me has insecurities about certain parts of their body, but the extreme mental anguish and intrusive thoughts about self mutilation that it causes me are different than what most people deal with. I see your point, but I think it really depends on the matter of degree.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. As with other mental health issues, it's a matter of degree. Everyone experiences anxiety at times, but having an anxiety disorder means it chronic and significantly affects your life in a negative way. The same can be said for body dysmorphia, it's more than insecurities. It's a very obsessive/compulsive and enshrouding ideation you have about your body image that often doesn't align with reality.
@FoxxyFire-HellFrost

Same. When I was 15, I had severe BDD, an eating disorder, and agoraphobia. I would have anxiety attacks about going to school after trying on at least 10 shirts and believing I looked fat. I would sob and cry because I just saw the fat kid who used to get bullied for it. I was 103-106 lbs and 5'3" and after losing a lot of weight from cancer treatment, I suddenly developed anorexia. I had stopped eating because the treatments cause loss of appetite and to cover it up, I would lie and say I ate so I would stay thin. That's how crazy BDD is. It's not just insecurities, it's when you see something in the mirror that is not reality and it causes mental anguish.

Speaking of neather regions. Back when I was in university (my first attempt at least, I also just discovered that I went to the same university as Lux when I made my second attempt at a higher education) they had a sort of 'protest' when it came to the pornification of what women were supposed to look like down there. They placed large photos of vulvas from volunteers all over the place with the words 'this is normal' written under it. Shaven, unshaven, various sizes and colors. It was a big thing back then in 2011-2012 because a new study had come out where a lot of young women thought there was something wrong with them because of shit men said and what they saw online. Honestly, I think it helped, at least I and many of the women I studied with did feel a bit better seeing just how damn different we all look.

Hiya! (trans) guy with Body Dysmorphia Disorder! Just wanted to sort of open up the conversation and let it be known that the reason its seen as dangerous is because while, yes, everyone who gets plastic surgery may be very insecure, that is not synonymous with dysmorphia, and its called a disorder for a reason (it makes their life and mental state disordered or chaotic) In extreme case like my own and likely in that Renee's as well, body dysmorphis can cause urges and intrusive thoughts for self mutilation, and can even cause a distorted perception of your own features, almost akin to hallucination I dont personally find the way it was brought up in the video to be offensive at all, but did want to get that info out there and hopefully create a learning moment for everyone out there who is curious
@chezsrandombs
@chezsrandombs 10 ай бұрын
Also, the reason they ended up choosing not to fix it at first, was because they had a point with BDD causing issues with reconstruction BDD causes issues with ANY change, even good change, good change just happens to be less painful mentally The reason her having that surgery would've caused issues, is because she would have ended up with a still rather average butt, not the butt she wanted or the volume she wanted, which would've likely lead her down a rabbit hole of getting her implants or other volumising surgery all over again

I understand why doctors would be cautious about operating on patients diagnosed with body dysmorphia. But unless they’re SCREENING everybody for body dysmorphia, it seems like they’re just punishing someone for being honest. He sounds like he’s more concerned with legal liability than anything. But maybe I’m reading too much into that? Im glad he’s helping that woman regardless because she really needs help.

I've encountered that sort of attitude from a plastic surgeon working in a state hospital. I haven't had anything done but I went for a consultation a few years ago because I wanted to look into my options for a neck lift and brow bone reduction. It's really like they're punishing you for being open and honest about wanting to improve your looks. Even though that is what they make their money with. The surgeon I saw thought there was something wrong with me for wanting to improve my looks and not being satisfied with my current look, so he really emphasized I get a screening (it wasn't standard). I got the screening in the same state hospital and I got the green light, they could not find any reasons why I shouldn't continue with the procedure. After the screening I had another appointment with the surgeon and during that appointment I decided not to continue with the surgeon. Firstly it didn't sit right with me that he insinuated that I had body dysmorphia just because I was open, realistic and honest about what I thought about my current looks. I wasn't even talking in a negative way about my own appearance, I just got the impression I wasn't allowed to dislike my own looks at all. He was also just rude and seemed to think of himself as superior. He then offered me a bunch of botox treatments I did not ask for and explained a plan that had me coming back to him for years. He liked what I wanted done during the first appointment, then completely changed his mind during the second appointment and disliked the procedures I wanted done. He was really trying to convince me to get his suggestions done and for me to come back for another appointment. I made up an excuse so I didn't have to make an appointment then and there. I have rarely been that uncomfortable around a dr. This was at a state hospital too, not a private clinic.

Here's the thing with body dismorphia - it is a real psychiatric illness that has had its meaning diluted by how it is used by the general public. Body dismorphia is an extreme dissatisfaction with parts of your body where NOTHING that is done will make the person happy. Either they will continue to find something wrong with that part of their body or will then go on to fixate on a different body part. It is way more than simply going "I think I'd look better after having this procedure done." I'm of the opinion that anyone seeking elective cosmetic surgery for things that wouldn't be considered reconstructive should be evaluated for body dismorphia because it can be a liability to do surgery on someone with the condition who then turns around and is not satisfied with their end result. But, it can be nearly impossible to diagnose until after a person has already undergone multiple cosmetic procedures. Part of the protocol at many bariatric clinics also involved psychiatric counseling for similar reasons, actually, both before and after surgery. For the lady in this video, I think the surgeons were wrong for not being willing to help her correct what is obviously a botched job that has left her with a clearly abnormal appearance.
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 10 ай бұрын
@@clarisaxpianist Exactly. I looked it up yesterday and multiple definitions defined it as an excessive concern/preoccupation or obsession with an imagined flaw. People with body dysmorphia see themselves as abnormal looking or even disfigured because of their own perception of one or more features of their body and/or face. That's why they will never be happy no matter how many procedures they get because their perception doesn't align with reality. But a lot of people these days think that thinking you are ugly, or being dissatisfied with something about your appearance counts as body dysmorphia. Even doctors. I did a few free screening tests last night out of curiosity. I got almost zero or zero on all of them, so no BDD. I might not like some things about my appearance but I still think I look normal, and most of the time I don't think about my appearance.

Yeah, it wasn't clear to me if she actually had a diagnosis or if she self-diagnosed. Like, if she self-diagnosed, indeed it's best to get a professional to evaluate you, but if she doesn't have BDD, then maybe she can be greenlit for the surgery
@lwoods1940
@lwoods1940 10 ай бұрын
Well said. Either he's concerned with liability; or maybe the show was setting up for a follow-up episode. It feels disingenuous to me that they are not willing to do the surgery when it's not "just" that she doesn't like how she looks; she was literally botched and as Lux points out it's more reconstructive at this point.

On the topic of trans people in sex work I happen to have quite extensive knowledge and experience with talking to people in this exact situation and i can say that as far as trans women are concerned, in most cases the reason they resort to sex work is out of need (as opposed to the ideal situation where you have the luxury of thinking about it as any other work option). As far as I have observed, the stories are usually centered around the fact that they may not 'pass' well enough in order to be accepted at conventional workplaces. And just like anyone else, trans women have to work, make money, pay rent etc. I can talk for hours about fetishisation (some love it, some think its disgusting) and about the obvious issue of - in the year 2024 we are still confronted with people going into sex work bc they are told by our sick society that they are not welcomed in any other way. Paradoxically, trans people are being told to stop making everything about their sexuality whilst not letting them exist in places other than sex work.

Just the sheer amount of access to information we have today was unthinkable to them. “Who was doing nose jobs on 15 year olds!?” Right!? Unless it’s for repair from an accident no reason you’re still growing! My older half sisters have been getting Botox and other surgeries since 16 I think it’s crazy that their mother thinks it’s even okay. They get their “crows feet” and “smile lines” done once a year. They’ve each had breast surgeries and tummy tucks as well. One had reconstructive surgery from a DV situation but yeah insane to me

I really felt for this lady. Must be *so* hard, especially back then in LA, trying to be comfortable in the skin you're in and be happy with yourself. It's already such an intense journey, I can't imagine how expensive and arduous this process was. And then to feel it's "botched" must be very disheartening.

My understanding of body dysmorphia is that it's less to do with "regular" insecurities or wanting to change the way you look, and more about your self image, including the way you physically see yourself in the mirror, not lining up with reality. I struggle with it immensely (thanks 2000s trash tv) and on a bad day, what I literally SEE with my own two eyes in the mirror is radically different to what I see on a good day. I have heard before that surgeons would rather refer you to a mental health specialist first if you have BDD, because physically changing your body won't necessarily change what you see - it's a mental issue not a physical one. So ultimately, patients with BDD are significantly more likely to be unsatisfied and want further surgery, because their brains are liars and they can't see any difference.

We don't all have "a little body dysmorphic disorder" same way we don't all have "a little OCD" or "a little Autism" -- just because something overlaps or is relatable doesnt mean it's as distressing and debilitating as the clinically diagnosed form. We do all have unrealistic beauty standards and lots of people are hard on themselves, but BDD is specific intense distress around specific body parts.

I think this was back in the early 90s (could have even been late 80s) until they regulated plastic surgery more. This was in the USA, and I only heard of it there. I may be wrong, but I've seen shows on it in the past.

I'm a straight cis woman and I found that interaction really inappropriate, from calling her a "transgender" to indicating she can't experience sexual pleasure to calling out his wife to making fun of micropenises. Much of that can be triggering to trans people, causing dysphoria, but it's also just obnoxious in general. We don't need the locker room talk-they can leave that back in the 70s or whatever. Oh god, it's getting even worse. I know these guys are excellent surgeons, but I'd feel uncomfortable dealing with them after seeing all the inappropriate behavior and comments.

22:00 Body dysmorphia is slightly different from body/gender dysphoria! Dysphoria is to be unhappy with what is really in the mirror, dysmorphia is to have a warped perception of what's in the mirror, sometimes to the degree of seeing a "monster" or severely exaggerated or shrunken features. The reason it's important not to operate cosmetically on someone with body dysmorphia is that they probably will not mentally register even the best results and may go for more dangerous and extreme surgeries to compensate when what they need more urgently is psychological and/or psychiatric help. Hopefully I'm not getting any of this wrong (my degree is from a few years back).
@Draggonny

What really confuses me about the whole "no plastic surgery for body dysmorphia patients" argument: She already has implants in her body. You're supposed to replace implants regularly. Is she supposed to wear the same old botched implants until they're 50 years old, because "oh, we can't do surgery on you, you have BDD"? What's that supposed to accomplish? And if she's supposed to get them replaced anyway in a few years, why not fix them now? Why make her suffer with implants that flip around in her body for any longer than she has to?
@Siilikeiju
@Siilikeiju 5 ай бұрын
They are so hypocritical. There are people coming into this show and saying things like "my breasts are my whole identity" but do they ever mention body dysmorphia in those cases? Absolutely not. Those implants are completely botched so why wouldn't they do corrective surgery on her? My guess is it's because it makes a nice story line where the doctors seem so ethical... unless you look at so many other things Dubrow has done.

27:15 The main reason they (and most other surgeons) aren't going to do it, is because no matter what they do she isn't going to like it. Since plastic and cosmetic surgeons rely so heavily on their reputation they won't risk it on someone they know isn't going to get the (impossible) result they want. She needs to get to a place where she will accept her body as imperfect.

Some of this vaginal rhetoric is very... _problematic_ to say the least (and I don't use that word very lightly). Kimber's situation is highly complex and I hope she's doing well, but I can't help but acknowledge that their ideal as explained at 6:05 and the earlier sections of the episode is such a wild and honestly hurtful thing to hear so casually said... it's the tie between youth, looking "virginal," and bodily aesthetics as a fully grown adult. But like I said it's complex and this is for reality tv, but I just really hope in the 10 years since this aired more people have developed a different viewpoint.

Just to chime in as someone who's had bottom surgery and have done a lot of research. Her not having innerlips is not necessarily a botched procedure. Plenty of surgeons perfer to do the surgery in 2 stages or there simply isn't enough material to quite hit it in the first go. What I'm wondering is why she didn't book a revision with her surgeon sooner.

Hello, therapist here! In the case of turning down the buttock patient, the dr mentioned 1. doing no harm and 2. she won't be happy with the end result. He suggested therapy first. From my end, I concur. Having body dysmorphia and undergoing that surgery would have likely worsened her mental state and led her to more surgeries to get that "full and phat" look back. The reason for it being botched was her dysmorphia (as u mentioned, patient error). So no surgery she does will actually help or fix anything unless she is able to perceive her body in a better light. Even recontructive, she'd still view it the same way. Therapy will help her to process the emotions/thoughts that lead to such destructive behaviours. If it were a life or death situation, or a health concern, I am sure the drs would have recommended to go ahead w the surgery. Just my two cents. Love you luxie!
@AnniCarlsson

And thats the issue with have body dysmorphia. Recontrution don't take that away. If it been like a bad nose job that restrikt breathing through the nose it is also bad for health to not do it even if patient not going to like it they atleast can breath again so that maybe help the dysmophia some when finelly breath. But a flipping butt can wait to rigth mindset so bot redo misstakes.

But Luxeria, Dubrow didn't say that men don't HAVE breast tissue, just that he doesn't have the same amount on a trans woman as on a cis woman. With Kimber it's more extreme, because she's so skinny and previous surgeons have removed/destroyed everything. It's not as obvious in this episode, but in later episodes Dubrow talks about the problems transgenders have had in the past, when getting surgeries or other treatments. He has the elegance of an elephant in this episode, but his heart seems to be in the right place. And yes, the rejection of potential patients are in every episode.
