The elephant hunt is bitterly criticized - at least by western NGOs. In Botswana, home to 130,000 elephants, it’s seen differently.
Conflicts between humans and elephants occur time and again in Botswana. The large and incredibly strong animals lay bare the roofs of huts, destroy enclosures and sometimes even attack people. It is no wonder that criticism of elephant hunting in Botswana from Western animal rights activists is not well received. Local hunters are allowed to shoot a certain number of elephants each year, as are tourists from abroad. They bring a lot of money into the country, which ultimately also benefits animal welfare, according to the Botswana government. They even want to send 20,000 elephants to Germany so that the Germans can learn about the problems that come with living with elephants. In Botswana, they are proud that the elephant population has recovered thanks to consistent animal welfare programs - but are suffering the consequences at the same time. A report by Florian Nusch.

People of Botswana, thank you! Thank you for doing such a great job, it is amazing to see elephants are thriving in your country. You showed the world it is possible to protect wild life, you sacrificed for this. You are the ones to decide how you deal with your elephants now and from what I see in this video, you are doing the right thing. All that I saw happening was normal, natural, there is a concern to minimize the animal suffering, rules exist and are enforced and nothing is wasted. Please continue to educate people and stand up to people that have an opinion without knowing all the facts.

Hey bro , no hate at all but 130.000 is not 'too much' , there used to be many more . the only reason why it now looks like there are too many is due to human interference and building community on the lands the elephants migrated through for hundreds of years . i fully do agree there needs to be a good solution to this conflict and that the people are having a tough life like this but this on the long run was created by ourselves . and now its on us to find an ethical solution

@@lblbestmomentshighlightsan400I agree with you. Unfortunately in order to have an abundance of animals and nature, humanity would have to shrink its population and live more like traditional hunter gatherers. That would be impossible unless you want a genocide of all of humanity. That said best we can do is minimize the destruction, and that involves walking a fine line between human needs and nature. Even if it involves limiting population of animals for a more developed society.

As someone who lives not so far from wild elephant's natural habitat let me just tell you conflict between humans and elephants can turn really ugly you sometimes hear about some old lady/kid who went to collect wood or to play got killed by an elephant attack or people throwing firecrackers on the elephants etc. it's hard to understand from European pov because almost no big predators, wildlife or highly venomous animals live there but it is part of normal life for many, I personally don't support hunting but there isn't really some kind of "silver bullet" to end human-wildlife conflict instantly.

They also don’t understand ppl hunting come and pay all this money which locals never acquire a cent of that they can actually see as valuable to their lives. So they might get free meat here and there but aside from that they’re left with angry elephants who don’t forget about the ppl that killed one or more of them. Which creates hostility towards the locals which they have to deal with on their own after hunters leave I imagine

If you want to be safe(r) fom mountain lions, rattlesnakes, bears, range cattle, moose, wolves, and bison, then the first step of many is to give them plenty of habitat that you don't build on and stay away from them unless you're willing to take your chances. If they come to your back-yard, then you must deal with them. This works in North America until as all too usual someone takes land & converts it to unviable for the wild things unless they come into our territory. It's not a total answer, buy loss of habitat endangers all,

I am a Botswana citizen and have recently been more informed on the issue of human elephant conflict. The problem is not that humans are encroaching on elephant territory, that is too simplistic. The problem is their numbers have exploded to the point of invading human settlements deep inside the country. Whats worse is while government have measures to try compensate people whose property have been damaged, the compensation is not enough, the government is able to compensate this people only a fraction of their losses sometimes even less than ten percent of the losses. There is still land in Botswana and i believe if government had resources they could move some settlements elsewhere. The problem is those people are poor and if they were to be resettled, the government would have to cover all the costs. As it stands now all this compensation comes from Botswana government coffers, i believe the best alternative would be for western nations with moral objections to the solutions proposed by our government to donate money towards resettling the people and investing in success of their new establishments. I suspect that solution would be temporary as well since elephants are now spotted less than 200km from the capital.

When it comes to wildlife and people conflict, part of the problem is that human activity creates a concentrated foodsource that will always attract self inviting guests that eat the humans hard work before it reaches their dinnertable. Ask how many non consumptive companies are owned by Botswana citizens and then ask how many hunting companies are owned by Botswana citizens. Huntining is fine, the problem is that both people and elephants needs space and the trick is to figure out how to give nature enough space. Europe and US have took most of the nature out by converting land to farmlands, cites etc. maybe African countries can learn from our mistakes.

When has managing wildlife because of conflicts with human mean all elephants will be killed.. If we didnt value them we wouldnt have the numbers we have today..People die and families suffer. The compensation offered by government can not even cover 10% of the costs of our water reservoirs which are crucial to livestock if its a dessert environment.. Communities benefit, health care , schools and so many other things. PEOPLE HAVE NOT MOVED TO WHERE ELEPHANTS ARE . ELEPHANTS GO TO THEM DUE TO THE SCARCITY OF WATER.

The money generated from trophy hunting should solely be used to develop communities living around these elephants. I fully agree with the conservationist on the point that communities do not really benefit because the money is going elsewhere. The government should pour that income into improving the livelihoods of those communities. the so called "much needed protein" sustains them for a short while, but that money could be used for something meaningful and that lasts longer. people need to focus on the bigger picture here.

It’s not hunting if you don’t eat it. The villagers eat the meat, which is great. Trophy hunting isn’t seeming to negatively affect the community but they certainly arent reaping the main benefits. The villagers aren’t seeing any of the hundreds of thousands of dollars collected from foreigners trophy hunting. You could say it’s going towards water system or conservation, but it’s going to ppls pockets & villagers still left dealing with angry hunted elephants and no financial help for them. Animal activists will be passionate about protecting elephants, and I get that but what I don’t get is why nobody talks about how badly these ppl are being screwed by their governing ppl. It’s the same with any other resources they are plentiful in, international businesses come and export the resource out and the money collected from those resources exported never to be seen by villagers in anyway. It is a really scary and sad cycle of corruption and those who want to change that cycle are killed in trying to.. I can’t imagine the worries these ppl live with daily aside from being mistreated by their leaders.
@danmcallister437

They certainly are reaping benefits. This elephant hunt was done in a community area. The hunting outfitters have to bid for quota set out by the national government and apply to communities for use of their areas. A fee is paid to the community for every animal shot, as well as a commitment to improve infrastructures such as schools, boreholes, roads and bridges.
