I grew up with this song and love this interpretation. The company store was a real thing in America, on cotton plantations or other work farms.

Coal mine companies across Appalachia as well. Then cotton mills did one better. In addition to the company store, they bought up large acres of land and built houses to rent to the employees. Quite often these would be two family duplexes with very reasonable rental rates, that were taken from your check each pay period. But if you lost your job, your family would be immediately evicted and any rent due or money owed to the company store would be taken from your last check.

I'd say Markus here conjures a tender explosion. 16 tons itself is certainly remarkable and wedges into brain in forever. And Markus isn't the only one who cherish this gem melody. Here in KZbin I met twice performing of standard blues decorated with tinges of 16 tons. Unfortunately, I forgot thouse artists and bands. One of them was lady.
