Bought a Used Grom? 5 Must Do's Before You Ride!

I’ve been watching a lot of videos to figure out what to get as a first bike and I’m pretty sure I’ve decided on a Grom. I think it’ll be the perfect bike to learn on. I was planning on getting one new just because I’m not very mechanically inclined but with videos like this it has me thinking of checking the used market first. I’ll have to watch a lot more videos to see if I think I can do the work myself but I appreciate videos like these that give me a little confidence that I can do it myself. Even if I buy new these things will still need to be done at some point so I’ll need to learn at some point

I think you're right on the money with a grom being a great learner! Even if you don't buy used, maintenance will always need to be performed so familiarizing yourself with the bike is a good move, it will save you money too!

I would add fork oil and brake fluid to that list as well. Axles, wheel bearings, brake pads, etc. A bit further into it but just as critical. If you’re going to enjoy a motorcycle, you should be able to fully maintain it to ensure your own safety. And the Grom is the ideal platform for that. One more comment on the valve lash, you’re given the target, along with an acceptable range. So for the intake valve, it’s 4 thousandths plus or minus one thousandth. So 0.003” to 0.005” is the specified range. Same for the exhaust 0.007” target, with 0.006” to 0.008”. Cheers

I Bought a 2018 0km honda grom a year ago, it has almost 16k miles on it, i had no idea about cleaning the screen every once and a while, thank you so much for the info!

Mhammad krayem wow! You’re riding that bike!! If you’ve never serviced it, you’re definitely due to open the clutch cover clean the screen AND the oil spinner, look up the spinner cleaning, it’s a tedious but necessary chore! Thanks for watching!

Good vid. I got my Grom new and had to do most of the stuff you mentioned in the first 1-2k miles (break in period). Also, worth mentioning, is how bad stock tires are.Used stock tires are probably even worse. I junked the "Vee" rubber for the Michelin City Grip tires. A very noticeable difference in handling and wet riding performance. To save some money I took the wheels off the bike myself and brought them to an indie tire dealer to do the hard part (mounting and balancing).

3:34 and 4:18, I like to slip a piece of cardboard between the swingarm and the wheel during chain service so that the overspray of the chain cleaner and chain lube don't end up on the tire 👍

That’s a great engine, I’ve heard tons of great stories about it and Honda has used the same basic design since the 60’s or 70’s. FYI a valve adjuster screwdriver costs nothing and can be a big help.

I'll look into one of those screw drivers you're talking about. And yes, Honda HAS been using this same engine since the late 60's! It's in all the trail 90s and 110s, bomb proof tried and true design.

Yep, Honda sold a basic horizontal pushrod OHV motor in 1958, then in 1965 they moved to a chain-driven overhead camshaft, since then, specifications, ignition, and induction have changed, but design has remained the same.

CT, There's a 2018 Grom for sale in Cincinnati where I live. It has the real expensive exhaust,new grips, and some other stuff. He said it needs a turn signal control,? Or something like that. He wants $2000 for it and it has 1100 miles on it. It also has new tires on it. So, what do you think?

My Honda Elite 80 (1985) crapped out last summer; I cracked off both exhaust bolts, couldn't fix it myself and I've been looking at Groms since. 80cc tops out at 35mph, so I'm looking for more top end for in-city commuting. I'm guessing a 125cc is topping at 50-55, so it's perfect in-city.....but a no-go for freeway. No problemo; that's what my K75C Beemer is for.

Its by far the best stock color scheme ever made (in my opinion) on the grom. You definitely scored! I'm big on the Zoom mufflers man, by far the best bang for your buck, and they're not too loud and give you good tone for the money. Good grab my friend!

You can do it! Read some forums, watch some videos, get all the correct tools and get in there!

you don't have to worry about the battery or the wiring harness getting wet they are made for that some people ride in the rain. all harnesses should have water proof connectors with lil rubber inserts and the battery would need to have a puddle of water on top of it to connect the terminals together but it still wouldn't do much other than drain the batter because its DC power. the only place you don't want water is in the exhaust or the carburetor everything else should be fine unless damaged or altered and worst that would happen is maybe a short and would be fine once it dried out.

MrOlionabike I’m excited for you too! I should’ve made a video showing the actual cleaning of the oil spinner However, there’s a lot of good videos already out there, just give it a search. It's all what you make of it man, I think it's a lot more fun to ride a slow bike fast tbh, and I can go out and ride the grom in any mood. For a big bike, it takes more time to gear up, and I've got to be in a the mood and focused to ride a big fast bike. Grom is just a more fun relaxed thing to me, but hey, results my vary. Let me know when you get the 2022.

Love your vids. I picked up a Benelli TNT135, love it. Then the GF took possession of it!!! Looking at a Green Grom now. Dunno if it'll be as quick as the Benelli, but there are a ton of things you can do to it. Aftermarket for the Benelli is kinda weak at the moment. Watched a bunch of your vids. We are both newbies and it would be nice for someone to explain all the different parts of the bikes. Keep up the great work.

Aftermarket between the grom and the Benelli aren't even close, the grom has pretty much unlimited aftermarket potential. You can definitely make that Grom keep up with or go faster than the Benelli, no doubt!

Pull the plug out when you find top dead center then double check tdc. You need to check the spark plug any way.

Valve clearance for Honda … the rebel anyway is 002-004. I have to do it about every 5k miles.. if not you can start to hear it tick a little.

Loved the video I work on my bikes just like that... One tip... Your chain has a master link just like me ax1... Make your life easier... Unclip the chain, bucket, chain looped like a snake three nuts under it to give you space from the botton and fill with kerosene... Live it 10 minutes soap water and she is ready to rock... Clip it up and lube

Swapping everything might be a PITA, I'd keep whichever one you're more confident with. You still got that Trail 90? I want one baaad, time for an offroading/in town vid with the 90! Save money, do it yourself.

Bought a couple of pit bikes at a yard not running in2014.had a blast fixing them up.then I saw the grom. Wanted one of those bad but waited.then along comes the monkey. Pulled the trigger this time.if I can find a deal on a grom I still.but right now the old dude is cool with monkey.i changed sprockets to 14 up front and 37 rear.4th gear has pulling power now.instead of like a overdrive.thanks mike z

Badass video dude thank you so much for showing me how to clean that screen my grom has around 4K miles but I've had it since brand new & I changed my oil probably every 400-600 miles or something LOL. 1st oil change was like 200 MI... And I do need to clean that screen but I remember a guy that worked at my local motorcycle shop for 20 years said that the old trail Hondas would have that screen in there and they ran for 40 or 50 years and never had the motors cracked open (still running lol) so he said yeah you can clean it but does it need to be done? I don't know... His words not mine. Sooo 🤷

I appreciate you taking the time to comment, thank you! I would definitely do the screen. Keeps the oil pressure as high as possible. Just because it CAN go years and years, doesn't mean it should :)

@@CTGromer yeah that's a very valid point. I just never done it before & don't like taking shit apart I'm not real familiar with it should be relatively easy tho.... I also have a Zuma 125 & I remember I was nervous getting into the clutch n' CVT type stuff but now I do it all the time & it's like clockwork no problem... I'm sure that's how the Grom will be after I do it... Mine has 2,750 Miles. I take real good care of my bike it's completely stocked with just a 14 tooth & a slip-on & never do wheelies either cause it starving 4 🛢️ when u do it

While all these things should be inspected, no, you shouldn't have to do any of this stuff on a bike off the showroom floor, but you should absolutely do all this after the first 600 miles!

Hey, I really appreciate the compliment, saving money is the name of the game! Especially on these groms, the procedures are so simple, most can so them! Now thats a great question, and one I may just decide to do a video on! Jon's Moto Garage (another channel I like) does a great video on this topic. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6u2e5Wvr850i68 his videos are a little different than mine, but I thought I'd throw it in. $0.02 on the subject would be: Find out as much as you can about previous maintenance, look for evidence of abuse or hard crashes on the bike (check bar ends, levers, foot pegs, shifter, foot brake, fenders, swing arm, exhaust etc for damage), check integrity of finishes on the bike- is it nice and shiny, hows the exposed rubber and apolstery look? Hopefully the bike never sat for an extended period of time outside...(the rubber will tell you that). Miles vs its model year- too little there's high probability is sat for a long time which means lots of potential engine problems (not that common in groms, as they're still a relatively new bike) High miles on groms don't scare me as much as a new top end is $120. Last but not least, get a feel for the seller, is he or she clean cut, how does their home and other vehicles look? This will give you an indication of how they treated the bike they're selling. Lol there you have it! I'm going to do a video on this soon, Ive decided! Thanks for the idea!

@@CTGromer Great reply. I always prefer down to earth videos. Sadly most just want to show off their latest buy. And mostly just justify their investment. That is if they have paid for it at all, and are just influencers. Another idea would be to make a video on a package to avoid the most common damages due to a parking fall (or kick). I just bought a Grom as an intermediate form of transport while changing jobs. And keep it later for quick city shopping and take it with me in a an or truck. Again, nice and clear info. Covering a complete part of the subject. I ordered a rear rack and a soft case converting into a backpack. Gives some support for my 7 year old son and store helmet or shopping. My other bike will stay a classic. A 2010 model Buell XB12Scg, factory shut end of 2019. And it will surely keep it's value in the upcoming electrical hype. So do a video of steering end caps, tank pads, shaft end protectors etc. So maybe this could become a stage two of essential mods. I will for sure look into it. But will keep colours etc very stealth looking.

Break-in no doubt. That's why you need to get in there after (I think) after the first 2000-3000 miles just to check it. Worth it for sure. Should clean the spinner too at 7,500!

Really the only thing I think you shouldve done differently is clean the oil spinner, you're already inside the clutch cover even if it's not due for a cleaning it just resets that timer! Other than that everything seemed great to do! I personally wouldnt use kerosene just due to its penetrating nature, but it's not gonna nuke the chain, and it's a grom. I just use WD40, it's cheap and it works to clean and put a slight film of oil on the chain. It's a water deterrent so it prevents rust, and then I use a dry type of lube on the chain to keep it from sticking to the rim, and to keep dirt from sticking to the chain, since I take mine offroad. The dryer the chain the cleaner it will stay!

all good advice for sure! I was going to clean the spinner if I planned on keeping it- but because I had a hunch I'd be selling it, I just stuck to the maintenance protocol as written. I'm gonna try WD40 to clean the chain next go around! IS that how you clean O-ring chains too?

CT Gromer Yes, I've found that its not the best cleaner when trying solely to remove dirt, but it helps keep it clean to begin with, and is literally a water deterrent. Any moisture gets repelled, and it in no way harms the chain. It's not the best cleaner, but if wd40 is not enough to clean your chain the chain is probably already well overdue or shot and needs replacing. After a clean with wd40 I lightly apply gear oil to the chain, and let it set. This again protects it from weathering, which has been the #1 killer to my garage kept bike chains. The tacky lubes seemed to carry more dirt, and the gear oil is just too damn cheap to not use it. With these I can afford to spend less on expensive cleaners that don't always help and just replace my chain more often. Even if there was a more effective solution for chain maintenance, it'd be much more expensive and I'd probably just end up never using enough to do a proper job. I apply my cheap solutions liberally, and it's very effective. In my case, my chains remain in better shape for longer, and get replaced less often for less money. If I have a dangerously dirty chain thats too much for wd40 but is still in good condition, I use Simple Green first to help remove dirt and oils. I have not found it to leak into or harm chains in any way. I used to use Kerosene but I found it dried my chains out with extended use, it worked too well. It can hurt other things on the bike too if its spilled, or slung off the chain. 👍👍

One thing I'm disappointed with is the lack of finding stock crate e fines for these things. Would be nice engine to swap around, especially with it having a decent size stator or even larger aftermarket stators for more electronic accessories.

I've never messed with motor swaps on these, you can BBK them, or CBR300 swap them, but a grom is a grom, not meant to be a freeway or long commuter bike, just an in town hooligan bike.
