Concerning grades in videos maybe you could adapt a system of "Hard for the bois", "Near flash grade", "Project hard" etc. to give us the feeling for the perceived difficulty, not the actual grade in the gym. btw blue dyno didn't look that easy, nice send Omar.

I'd only agree with the grade chat for indoor climbing. Seeing as routes aren't around long enough to have an agreed upon grade. For outdoor routes I think it's really important to have them. I like having a benchmark to gauge myself. Gives me something to work to.

We use a app for the indoor problems, they are on the wall for 8 weeks.. the setter puts the grade he thinks it is in the app, and then we all can climb it put in our own grade.. after 2 weeks it's really clear what the grade is, because of all the different types of people that climbed it.. from beginners to 8a boulderers.

Then again, rock wears down and breaks off so the grades can change so quickly. Went climbing at a new crag in France in summer, they had just bolted it and created a sparkly new topo. Guess what, it was an old quarry. Every second stone was loose. Their sparkly new topo was completely useless within weeks.

My gym uses little metal tags to display the grades of the climbs. Recently, for the first week of the set, they started flipping over the tags for anything harder than v2 so you can't see the grades. It has been great, got me trying stuff I probably would have never tried if I had seen the grade.

Great vid lads! Awesome gym as well! 😉 I'm not sure about your grading philosophy, though... I enjoy being able to have a feel for my progression by being able to do a grade that I previously couldn't... I know it's very subjective and the difficulty level depends on each climber, but I quite like having something to gauge my skill progression against. Anyway, that's my 2-pence 😜 Keep up the good work and it would be great to see you in Milton Keynes when you come back here! 👍

In the topic of grading - in my gym the "grades" are fictional characters like Angry Bird, Peppa Pig or Homer Simpson. Arguing that something was a Mario but should rather be a Hello Kitty is much less encouraging. Such grading system makes the discussion much less tense.😉

Basically what they've done with hang - people are a lot less likely to get 'hung up' (pun intended) on spicy vs. hot/two chillis vs. three chillis than on V grades.

Regarding the grades - Here in Berlin the gyms have little coloured stickers denoting the grade that they jam between the starting holds and the wall. Usually (from easiest to hardest) something like: green, yellow, blue, red, grey, black. Using stickers instead of the holds themselves means that you can use all holdsets for all difficulties, as the hold colour has nothing to do with the grade. Only having 6 grades also means that they overlap and you have enough variation in difficulty within a colour. Maybe something like that would work for you too?
@BoulderingBobat3 жыл бұрын
We grade with tags already :) so all holds are used on all grades

+1 on grades wrecking things. People won't try problems they otherwise would because it's a "hard" grade; they chase the softies of the grade. Grades don't work all the time across heights, arm reach anyway. Chillis!!!!!

Do you have any tips for an overweight climber (around 260 lbs/120 kg) with not enough strength to hold the holds for too long or pull up and with crap adidas shoes (we can't rent the shoes at the gym, it was prohibited because of covid.. And he is just starting out, second session, still doesn't know if he is into climbing, so buying a pair of shoes for 120 bucks or so (we live in expensive country) is just.. A no.

I agree that people obsess about V-grades too much. That's why at the gym I work at, we have circuits with ranges of grades: V0-V2, V2-V4, and so on. We recognize that difficulty can be pretty subjective based on a variety of factors: climbing style, height, etc.

The v grade system sucks because setters/gyms fucked it up and set so many soft problems it lost it's value.. but no grades is also dumb.. yeh i did a purple!!! but i have no clue what it is?. it's less satisfactory then yeh i did a 7a! (a real 7a)
@BoulderingBobat3 жыл бұрын
We have grades but it's basically easy, medium, hard, very hard. We want people to climb the routes because they seem interesting/fun rather than because they want to tick some arbitrary number. If people want to see what V grade they are, they can still go climbing outside etc.
@yScribblezHD3 жыл бұрын
@@BoulderingBobat My gym uses V grades but it's in ranges (eg V6-V8, V9+, etc). I think it's a nice middle ground for people who care about grades while still not discouraging people to climb certain problems that they may not have attempted otherwise if it had a solid grade value. Curious to know how the chili grading system works, maybe years from now we'll be sending 6 peppers outdoors lmao
@JamesFursedon3 жыл бұрын
@@BoulderingBobat I like the RIC system (risk, intensity, complexity), it can compliment your chilli grades and give some more insight into the style of climb. Might be tough to do for the whole gym but it could work for a comp circuit or progressive set.
@BoulderingBobat3 жыл бұрын
This is how most gyms are in the UK. Tbh I think it still limits people. Everyone is too familiar with V grades, they know their max/ average so they tend to stick to that bracket. A grading system that people are unfamiliar with but still shows expected difficulty is perfect in our eyes. Grading indoors is so subjective.
@BoulderingBobat3 жыл бұрын
It's weird, I find myself falling into this trap even when I know this is a thing. The best time we had was when the gym was being built and we didn't have any grades 🤷🏽♂️
