& that originally, the god inside Heather used Harry's grief for his deceased wife & his "1st Cheryl" to feed on his despair & ignite his hatred; almost causing him to almost strangled baby Heather. Having played SH3 just after finishing SH2, I swear it was way more terrifying in just about every aspect, to the point I didn't really care how empty the metro and sewers were, I loved them. Specifically the sewers, given how simply outlandish it felt to wander through those long, dark paths with that drone noise behind each and every step. Haven't felt that many times, although that is still not as scary as a panic attack.

I suppose it depends on what makes you feel most uncomfortable: being the victim of something awful or having done something terrible and having to live the rest of your life with that over you. At the end of the day the events in the games that centre the cult are much worse because you can't make any excuse for ritualistic child abuse and forced impregnation of a minor, whereas what James did could at least be argued as ending his spouse's suffering. I imagine a lot of people got more out of James's story because it's a thing they could potentially see themselves doing (or being tempted to) in his circumstances but Heather/Cheryl/Alyssa definitely had the most horrific personal trauma possible out of the original series and the fact that she had to experience it a third time in SH3 is definitely pretty grim.
@ms.greywolf82283 жыл бұрын
@@casanovafunkenstein5090 that's a perspective I hadn't seen before, and it does apply in my case. One of the things I hate the most is innocence being stolen from someone for no rational motif, and I did have some shitty experiences with religious zealots that almost ruined spirituality for me and my friends. James' motif was one most people would face on such a situation, from what I've seen, because people are people. Still didn't spook me as bad as the days of panic attacks and lucid nightmares. Became kinda resilient towards fear because of that, so despite any weaknesses it may have, SH3 took the crown for me because it truly managed to make me feel uncomfortable, even more because of Heather. Knowing what women have to deal with, the whole game kept me on edge.

Agree, easily one of the scariest game I've ever played. Growing up I always thought that SH1 was scarier than SH2. But that was probably help by the novelty of the game and the technical limitations of PS1. I never found SH2 to be scary or disturbing but rather sad. SH3 on the other hand, had more creepy and terrifying locations, those bunnies still terrify me (IMO scarier than PH). It had one of the scariest sequence I've ever experienced, the mirror transformation. The fact that it slowly happened in game was what made it even scarier for me. Plus, it had one of the best video game opening song and you get to dress up and fight as a sailormoon knockoff 😅.

Heather is such a great character. She feels like such a real person with how she interacts with people and the world around her. She's not a helpless damsel, she's not an uber badass. The part about Heather's father I didn't think it was necessary to show interactions with him before his death. I could see that as being important for a friend or someone else. However it's clear that he's her father and they have a good or normal relationship, it's not like she despises him. If anything I think it can be more emotional to not have an interaction with him before he's killed. It's like being away from family for work or school, and tragedy strikes while you're away. Especially since Heather never got to have an in person dialog with her father, so she never got any last words. I agree it could be interesting to know how Silent Hill would approach having interactions with Heather's father before he dies, but I don't believe it's necessary.
@gRinchY-op5vr2 жыл бұрын
I felt like we got enough from notes and journals you find after his death either about him or he wrote, plus Heather's comments on things when you interact with stuff. Sometimes she'll talk about Harry, these things tell us all we need to know about their relationship. And showing any interactions between them right before he dies? That would have just given away the twist that he was Harry and she is actually Alessa/Cheryl too early on, it still bugs me that the HD collection didn't bother hiding his face the way it originally was because for some the HD collection was their introduction to the series due to availability

I feel SH3 is the best in the series. Heather is so releatable and written so well and her VA is so good she is my fav protagonist in all of gaming. While the story isnt as depressing as SH2 its far more disturbing. I mean Heather has a demon god in her and throws it up. As well as the monster designs being completely unsettling. The horror after the End of the Small Sanctuary never relents. You never have a second to breathe the horror is suffocating at all times. Which would normally be a bad thing but it works for this game. The hospital in particular being increcibly horrifying. Ive played this game 100s of times even speedrun it and it still has me on edge every time i play it. The only horror game to still creep me out after so many replays. SH2 is a masterpiece. So is SH3 and im def Team SH3 in terms of a favorite.

I believe that 2 and 3 were ported, but they were quite heavily compromised due to the PS2 games having a lot of very platform-specific visual effects that couldn't be replicated on other platforms and Japanese developers not having much experience making games for the platform (most Japanese consumers played on console exclusively and Japanese PC games were historically on platforms like the MSX, which were region-specific and predated the IBM compatible/MS-DOS era). That said there are mods for those ports that do a better job than the HD collection

Silent Hill 3 has some of the scariest sections in the franchise for me, that manequin room, that hospital room, and the haunted house. Also, the graphics in this game, wow, still hard to believe this was running on a PS2 in 2003. Anyway, for me, this is when the series ended, Silent Hill is a great trilogy, The Room just didnt do it for me, and after that, Team Silent disbanded, so...
@Nick-mv5kg3 жыл бұрын
I think Room really splits fans (with the debacle on whether it is a Silent Hill game or not), but the music and some of the set pieces really made it terrifying, you can see the inspiration from Korean ghost/supernatural films and Iappreciate how the team were able to capture that and make it the essence of SH4.
@VideoGuy232 Жыл бұрын
The room was the game that managed to capture the most consistent feeling of hopelessness and despair for me. Playing through it, the world feels very disorienting and labyrinthine. I don’t think it gets enough credit for the ways it tries to mix up the formula that was starting to show some wear in 3. There are some really great ideas and mechanics in the game, and just in its overall concept, even though the execution of those ideas can be hit or miss at times. The setting of the room and nightmare worlds was very fresh at the time, and the slasher -like mystery was a unique direction for the series. Henry’s solitude and peering out into the world from within was an interesting theme as well, even though his character could’ve been more fleshed out. Whether you like it or not, I think the Room should at least be commended for what it does bring to the table.

SH3 has that feeling of pure video game horror that lies in the fact that Heather just wants to go back home(for the first half) thus the game has the feeling of enemies wanting to kill you. In SH2 the enemies give the feeling that they could attack anyone that went through there thus us fighting them feels a bit more natural

I played the HD collection when Xbox 360 was the best thing ever. I downloaded it when Xbox would give us two free games each month with live pass but wasn't interested to play it until something told me to just give it a try and I was hooked. The graphics were really good in the HD make. I wouldn't say amazing but it looked good and still do till this day.

My only complaint is that I wish I could control the camera with the right analog stick (using the RT button is not as accurate as I would like), but I have really enjoyed playing the game

I’ve played this game maybe 10 times, just began my 11th play through, and I somehow just found the bulletproof vest for the first fucking time. Idk how I never knew about this

I actually always thought SH3 was the strongest game in the series. I thought it had the best graphics, game play, soundtrack, and protagonist. While I understand why SH2 has had the most longevity in its influence, I would always put out to people that SH3 was arguably the better game.

SH3 definitely has a lot going for it, but the reason why SH2 is generally regarded as the best game in the series is because the story is so good, while SH3 went back to the silly cult nonsense of the first game. Admittedly the bizarre story in SH1 and SH3 does a good job of enhancing the sense of being trapped in a nightmare, but even so I find it hard to take the narrative seriously.

@@BLZ231 I am aware of that.. hence saying I knew why SH2 has more influence. That's also why I didn't list "story" as to why SH3 was better. But that is a single component. Story gives longevity to SH2 but is that what makes a superior gaming experience? I would argue not necessarily.

@@andrewhill3278 Personally I think that gameplay and story are the most important aspects of a game. Fun gameplay can make up for a mediocre story, and a great story can make up for mediocre gameplay. If SH3 had a better story, personally I probably would rank it higher than SH2, as I do think the gameplay is overall better and more polished, I like Heather more as a protagonist, and the vibrant and grotesque environments of SH3 are more memorable than SH2's rather drab environments. I get that SH2's environments are a bit drab and washed out because of the story, and it works for the overall narrative and atmosphere the game is going for. But overall I think SH3 is much more interesting to look at. Still, the reason why I think SH2 works better than SH3 is context. In SH2 you keep going to see the well done story unfold, but in SH3 the story is just silly cult nonsense, so you keep going less because you want to see how the story unfolds and more because you want to see the next horror set piece. And while the horror set pieces are very well done, the plot connecting them all together is pretty flimsy.

16:22 yeah off-screen death is not good, maybe if the protagonist is killed by a stick golf is more impactful to players.

The soundtrack for Silent Hill 3 is one of the best video game soundtracks, especially Rain of Brass Petals - Three Voices Edit
