For me the non agitator model at times was aggrevating. Ours is a stumpy agitator, and if not loaded right it becomes uneven, and being short having to move clothes, house linens around in the washer because it gets all tangled and bulked on one side or another its tiring, and you have to use smaller loads of items. Which smaller loads I am not mad at as this helps the clothes or whatever get properly washed but no agitator makes me feel like I am getting a work out for my arms.

Non agitators tend to have trouble with sheets and cloths mix, screws them into a knot, if you have a large family and short time, some people over fill their machines. The sheets turn into parachutes and engulf all the cloths, then overloads. Having had front, top with or without agitator, I prefer top loader with agitator shorter time and comes cleaner for work cloths. Delicates i hand wash and then machine spin dry. Busy household.

That machine cleaned the clothes well, but had a moldy smell the last 5 years and also was very low to the ground, making unloading it awkward. It depends on how long you let them wash, one thing don't pack them, it will hinder the movement. I was at a laundromat the other day and there was an Asian woman who was packing clothes in a top loader in an adjatater washer like she was stuffing a turkey. It's a wonder they got clean😁.

Our experience has been that if the no-agitator type machine is loaded improperly it will twist the clothing into a tight tangled mess and not completely rinse out the loosened dirt from the clothing. We replaced an agitator type machine which was only 5 years old with a no-agitator type machine which is now 5 years old (and has developed a small leak), and the wear and tear on the clothing seems no better than or worse than the agitator type. One way we noticed the extra wear on the clothing is the lint trap in the dryer retrieves much more lint with smaller loads than it did when we had an agitator type machine.... We use small loads, rarely ever large loads. And the high efficiency no-agitator definitely requires a minimum of detergent or it won't rinse out the soap even with a double rinse. Bottom line is read the user manual and follow the instructions. We are shopping for a new agitator type as this is being written.

This was the better of explanations I've gotten anywhere here on You Tube. I can't imagine living in a household that would not require one or another of these two different type washers though, at any given time. QUES: Who has only mostly light and/or bulky things to wash? Who has mostly real dirty stuff? ANS: No one at any normal "household". Now, certain or specific commercial uses might generally be the ones that only have one or the other, at any given time. e.g. A Restaurant - linen; a Farm Sanctuary - overalls and blankets. A second point, is that these non-agitator types were supposedly a 'take off' from the idea of front loaders. But front loaders have gravity to help rotate clothes about. Some thoughts: let's face it, a more 'efficient' washer is not more 'efficient' if you'd have to wash real dirty clothes twice. Yet I do like the idea of clothes and straps not 'catching or stretching' (except when on each other). Either these new washers will work or they won't; time and people will tell. But even if they don't, I doubt manufacturers will resurrect the agitator as it is probably the part they get the most complaints about (w the exception of belts). And they will not want to admit any errors in judgment. P..S. What I really don't like about the newer model non-agitator is that you can't easily figure out a way to keep the lid open to watch your clothes wash. It is not your simple press latch, it is an inside invisible hook type and I'm afraid to hook something inside in order to keep the latch in an open position, and not be able to retrieve it without doing damage. I've always found it mesmerizing to watch clothes wash and I shall miss that. (I know - you don't have to say it, lol.)

When I was a kid I used to sit on the kitchen counter and watch our clothes washer work. Back then, there was no safety switch as such, so I could watch the entire wash cycle with the lid open. I just bought a brand new LG impeller washer, one of the nicer ones. I had a front load Maytag previously that worked very well but it finally went out. This LG is horrible. It does not wring the water out well enough and the clothes are sopped so I either have to dry them that way or spin again. It does not wash my hair off clothes. I picked off about 25 of my own hairs from a sweatshirt the other day. I didn't even know there could be that much hair in the wash as my previous washer got it all off. I have three dogs and weirdly it gets most of that hair but not mine. Also I've watched it run and sometimes it takes about 10 minutes for the top clothes to be pulled in to wash so those clothes obviously don't get as clean as the rest of the clothes. I washed a kitchen towel on Sanitary cycle and it still had crusted food on it. The towel wasn't very dirty to begin with. I'm so bummed because it is such a hassle to return something that big.

Once I had a 3rd option Swedish made "Electro-Helios" washing machine back in the late 70's and it suited me perfectly. It was a top-loaded horizontal drum (H-axis drum just like a front loader) and it washed clean and fluff-free as front-loading drum-washers always do better thanks to its two compartments i.e. inside round drum with laundry in a outer square box, but (unlike front-loaders) you could always stop it simply by lifting the top-lid and add what ever was forgotten. After opening the lid you rolled the inside drum by hand until you could open two "barn-doors" and chuck something extra inside the drum. Then it could just keep going washing again. Sadly I left it behind in Uppsala when moving to Australia, never to be seen again. That was ~50 years ago and many my washers later I never had a better one... Nothing close...and a similar washing machine is impossible to find 2020. Sad :-)

I've seen videos of that style and they look neat. As an American, though, I can promise you that they would be too complicated for Americans to use. People would find a way to lose fingers and hands in them. As an example of American ingenuity, those high speed top loaders, like the "agitatorless" one in this video, Americans put water impermeable items in them, which literally causes the washers to explode, and then try to sue for money because the washer blew up. Companies have had to recall machines, reprogram machines, relabel machine controls, and/or add more warning stickers to many machines because of this.

My five year old Whirlpool 4.3 cf impeller model just completely stopped rinsing the clothes. I had to wring everything out by hand to even dry the clothes for a week. My husband hated that machine from the start and wanted to go back to an agitator from day one. Well after replacing it with 4.5 cf agitator he model yesterday, I should've listened to him. I didn't realize how wet the impeller one left the clothes (even before the issues). Also it has cut down the time to wash and dry in half. The clothes actually smell like they were washed. I will never go back to an impeller model again.

Some LG top load washers now have agitators, but they don't seem to rotate the clothes from the bottom to the top (or vis versa) the way my older GE did (I don't think the GE washer is this video was not even made by GE). The LG agitator just moves the clothes back and forth with more force. My older GE also allowed me to set the water level in 5 different levels. My new LG only allows me to use Deep Fill, which is too much water, but necessary otherwise there will only be a puddle of water that will not get clothes clean. Many of the problems of new washers (and dishwashers) are caused by EPA regulations.

My biggest issue with top load washers is with the machines getting out of balance. I have had a front load washer for years and love never having to worry about it getting out of balance with towels, jeans or comforters. But I hate the smell. My machine just died and am looking at getting a top load washer but I dont want to deal with balance issues. Which of these machines is better for not getting out of balance or is that something that has been fixed in the last 20 years? Please help with suggestions???

the impeller is to try to simulate a front loader without being a front loader. those are gentler and use less water. so if you need that , get a front loader but expect them to stink after a while

To mitigate the stink, make sure you're cleaning the rubber gasket often, as well as the rest of the unit when it needs it, and leaving the door slightly open to ventilate.

We have an LG top loader and it washes brilliantly. Better than my front loader. It seems US versions somehow limit water but ours uses more than enough water. The clothes really get rubbed and tumbled about. The actions are amazing and the turbo wash function seems to do a great job. It spins the whole drum shooting water and soap from the top and into the clothes pulling it through the clothes. Then it rubs. Swirls. Pulses. Love it. It is the only top loader without an agitator that cleans better than a front loader and agitator top loader.

We have the Samsung extra large capacity washer & dryer with no agitator - I HATE them. I was curious to see actually how much water the washer uses even on a heavy duty load and I laughed as I opened the lid - there was a few inches of water. After the load is done washing the clothes are still practically dry. Newer is not always better. We’ve had our machines for 3 1/2 years and I’m currently looking for just a simple washer and dryer, with an agitator this time.

I recently bought a Maytag top-loader, with an impeller-agitator bin. That is, it’s an impeller model; the agitator doesn’t perform the same function as the old agitators, they simply prevent clothes from piling up on the center of the disk. At any rate, there are pros & cons. My old front-loader was easy on the clothes, and really wrung out the rinse water. But it smelled moldy, despite my cleaning and leaving the door open. Also, the dog’s fur got stuck behind the gasket, and it had to be cleaned regularly. So eventually the gasket gave out. Ugh. The new Maytag takes forever, but is very frugal with water, and somehow manages to get everything clean, although many commenters don’t believe that. But it gets unbalanced if you look at it the wrong way, and the clothes are still pretty wet at the end, meaning that you have to run the dryer longer. And it seems to create more lint than my dogs and kids could ever create! So to be honest, I can’t recommend one over the other. They each have good and bad points.

Try making sure you use a cycle with a full rinse and not just a spray rinse. You can also select the extra rinse option. You may get better results using a deep water or bulky item setting as well. The normal setting uses very little water so you need to use very little soap with it. You really need to use the optional settings to get a good rinse on this style of washer.

We purchased this Maytag MVW7230Hw washer from Pochel’s in Tacoma, Washington. It was delivered and set up by the delivery person. We tried to do a load of laundry and the washer wouldn’t agitate. I took a video to show that the agitator pretty much just vibrated, and didn’t even disturb the small amount of suds that formed when the machine partially filled with water. I took the video to Pochels the next morning. They said they would gladly deliver another machine for only $100. I told them I wasn’t willing to pay an additional $100 to get a machine that worked when I had already paid over $1,000 for one that obviously didn’t work. Pochels told me to contact Maytag for a repair. I explained that since I had the machine less than 24 hours, I didn’t think it appropriate to call for a repair, but they explained that was my only option. I called Maytag, and the first appointment is several weeks out Later we tried another load of laundry and the washer literally tried to dry clean the clothes. You can see in the video that there is NO water in the machine, enough water came out to dampen the clothes and that was it. At least this time the agitator worked! But I have to manually add water to each load even though I put it on maximum fill. It takes about 4 hours to do a load of laundry. This machine is supposed to save water, but even when the agitator does work and you manually add water to the machine, you have to push heavy jeans under the water and swish them around with your hand to get them clean. I might as well go to the river and pound my clothes on the rocks. The agitator doesn’t always work, the fill doesn’t always work, the agitator tries to dry clean the clothes with no water in the tub and it takes and the clothes on top don’t get clean.

How does an HE washer use less energy when a wash cycle takes over an hour vs something like a Speed Queen TC5 that can do a load in a half hour and get the clothes twice as clean as a washer without an agitator? This is for people looking in to Whirlpool, save yourself a headache. Stick to the older machines with nobs and agitators. Ours was purchased on 10/26/21 and failed 8 months later. They don't wash or remove stains properly, they mess up pants(specially jeans) and their warranty services is garbage! It took over 5 weeks for them to "locate" a motherboard to replace the one that went out on mine. Oh and if for some reason your part is not available anywhere, you literally have to wait for their to "special team" that tackles these types of part issues to source it out and they have 21 businessdays to do so. I called Whirlpool and the 3rd party repair company several times for me to get this info and push them to get back to me. 2 of those times the service company didn't do anything until they got my call. The codes we got were F8, E6, and both Whirlpool and the service company have already had this issue come up. Those codes will cause the machine to overflow. It did it to us we were lucky we were home to pull the plug on it before it floded the house.

We returned them and after a long hassle with Home Depot and Whirlpool, we got all our money back and ordered a LG front loader and GE dryer (we have depth issues). We know from our old condo back in 2008, that front loaders are silent, so we went with the best. Plus, they seem to clean better. Anything more then a medium load in a agitator model, won’t get soapy.

You are spot on. We recently purchased one of these agitator less washing machines and they are horrible, you have to override every setting because it wants to be "smart and conserve energy", whilst ending up costing the same or more as an agitator washing machine. We don't even have any "heavy soiled" clothing and it's still the worst washer I have ever owned. Huge learning lesson, but people will still come and mouth off about how "you didn't know what you were doing", as a way to diminish the truth of these awful machines. Better off using a wash board from the stone ages.

@Flinch Files it washes my over size load just fine. I never had any issues with it. If you set it on the wrong setting then the cycle won't rinse and drain properly. Maybe stick to a washer machine that isn't so advanced if you don't understand how to properly use the setting?

@@flinchfiles8445 Not only do these newer models suck!, they also take forever to complete a cycle wasting my time. My old Maytag washer (w/agitator) and dryer washed and dried clothes much faster and better. My old dryer dried clothes better on low than the newer one does on high. Another thing is my clothes do not smell as fresh either with the newer models. I hate doing laundry now.

If you put your wash on quick a BUNCH of soap is staying in your clothes even when you do a regular wash, watch the next time if you choose to see it. Turn it on again & you'll see all the leftover soap after it's been agitating for 2 minutes. Plus water is a major part of getting your clothes to come clean washers need more rinse cycles not less especially front loading washers. Also front loading washers and top loads without a adjitater in the middle don't scrub clothes clean there just barely spinning or tumbling on top of eachother.

Since I bought my bright red Maytag set 10 years ago I have always used extra rinse cycle just as a peace of mind measure to make sure there is no soap left. After reading your comment and that of others I'm glad I made that habit and got used to my typical 56 minute loads as well as my bull shit 42 minute "quick wash" loads lol. Washer finally hit the shitter just yesterday though which is why I am here...man trying to find the best, most reliable model possible is a headache...

The non-agitator GE washer that I've owned for two years is a total Pile and pain in the butt to use. Unless you load the clothing in very carefully, the machine goes out of balance, and ultimately doesn't completely drain, and spin. You get to reset the machine to drain & spin, and redistribute the load so it doesn't un-balance. Forget washing quilts because the machine can't even begin to balance a quilt, so you get to try 3-4 times, until you get it right. I'm 61 years old, this is the worst washer I've ever owned. I'm going to dump it on Craig's List and buy a cheaper-simpler washing machine.

Hello, which machine do you have?

We own one without an agitator and I can confirm they suck at cleaning clothes. You can literally put clothes in it folded, they will come out still folded. They don't churn the water or clothes at all.
