This tutorial covers how to make a bound buttonhole on heavy weight fabrics such as coating wool.
A step by step guide teaching you how to accurately measure where to put your buttonhole, how to get the welts perfectly even and also how to finish the buttonhole on the inside if your coat has a facing or a lining.

Thank you. This is probably the best tutorial for a bound buttonhole I have seen. So well explained :) I plan on making a wool coat and this is just what I want to do. The pattern calls for machines buttonholes but I think bound ones would suit the garment much better.

Beautifully done. I’ve never done a bound buttonhole before but might be doing this soon. I am amazed at how much hand stitching is done on these. Thank you for this video 🤗

Thanks! I love making these. Your video was a great refresher for me to watch before sewing them into a 1970s blazer.

At 8:40 when giving the welt a final shot of steam, the bouncy wool wants to spring out of position. I recommend using a clapper, or any sort of heavy, flat thing that can hold the steamed fabric really crisply down until it cools into position. It only needs to be there for a few moments but will help relax the fabric into accepting its new shape without springing up again.

Fantastic tutorial! I have some vintage sewing manuals which demonstrate bound buttonholes with pictures but they don't show how to finish the facing so I had been putting off doing the bound buttonholes on a vintage dress and a vintage coat I'm making. Thanks so much for putting the time and effort into this video. It is so helpful. I'm off to practice my buttonholes!

Thank you so much for being a perfectionist! Brilliant, I will save this for later. BTW, I never press wool without a damp cloth on top. Comment?

If hand strength is an issue, it might be easier for some people to manipulate a smaller iron when dealing with small, detailed ironing like this buttonhole needs. I find the Steamfast mini-iron to be very useful for such jobs. It does put out a generous amount of steam and basically fits in the palm of your hand.

Excellent tutorial! You may want to try silk thread or rayon embroidery thread for your tacking stitches. They are easier to pull out.

Thank you! I love the look of this buttonhole style but I think it will be intimidating until I have actually done it myself a few times. I have designed outerwear for myself and am trying to get over the fear before I get to that part of the the construction. I know I can do a decent regular buttonhole by hand but I want to have this garment for years. I want to succeed at this challenge.

That's a brilliant attitude to have and the best way to get better is to keep practicing! Even though I've done loads of these buttonholes over my lifetime, I still always make a practice one on a scrap of fabric before I start 💚

Thanks for your very intricate tutorial. The pattern didn't explain the process very well. Your tutorial was very relaxing to watch because of your soothing voice and music. I was very frustrated trying to figure out those buttonholes and needed something to calm my nerves and show me how to do the process.

Great tutorial, thank you. I have been practicing with fabric that has a wrong & right side. It took me three attempts (I am not the brightest button in the tin ;0), to realise the patch should be placed rightside to rightside......deep sigh
