This is the first version of the song I've actually heard performed by an Australian. :)

Was in Ghent , Belgium in The Troll bar a few years ago and there were about 10 fellas playing tunes , dittys and shantys . I asked if they knew Bound for Botany Bay . They didnt but played this song instead and it was fantastic . I promptly bought them all a beer . The places you fall in love with a song

South Australia was the only state that convicts weren't sent - that's the significance of the song, if you were heading to SA you were going by choice.
@StihlmaddArborist4 жыл бұрын
well yes that - and the facts that Port Adelaide meant the availability of prostitutes and beer , two things practically guaranteed to encourage thirsty sailors to work even harder. By Choice as you said...

@@StihlmaddArborist Beer in Port Adelaide? Nah, that is a myth. Just because even up until 20 years ago there were 20 pubs within 2km of "Queen's Wharf" (the main wharf) doesn't mean there was beer, kidding of course. I grew up in the Port Adelaide area for the first 25 years of my life and so many of the buildings that were built in the 1830's and 1840's are still standing, albeit abandoned, because they are heritage listed and the outside cannot be altered. Because of the "Free Settlers" and not convicts if the reason that we have Proclamation Day on the 28th of December as that was when the Settlers first arrived in 1836 and proclaimed us a free settlement. Unfortunately, due to business reasons, it is rarely celebrated on the day anymore as it has been replaced to coincide with the Boxing Day holiday in the eastern states. Such a shame really as it is a unique day for us South Australians.

It's actually a hauling song for ships bringing wool and wheat but the England. Wasn't written till after the ban on convict transportation.
