Did this very same route a few years ago, but the water was not low. Fantastic picture they bring back great memories. 👍👍

Nice video, I watched it to the end. I have enjoyed that route many times since I started coming up there in 1969. Boy, that is some low water.

Thanks for watching Brian! Wow, 1969! I think it was our 3rd trip to Lower Basswood Falls... seems the water is always low on Horse River. It probably doesn't help that we go in the fall :-)

Nicely done montage with beautiful photos and music! We entered Mudro this August (2023), and the water level was so low we had to portage an additional 60+ rods before there was enough water to begin paddling. Really enjoyed your video!

Thanks Lee! Yes that section of the Horse River is notorious in low water... and it seems to be low every time we pass through :-)

Gary: As always SUPERB VIDEO!!! Been thru there many times and I prefer higher h20 of course. Always like the remains of 100 year old logging ventures.

Thanks! I think this is the 4th time in the area for me... just love it! Agreed on the water levels... I do think this is the lowest I've experienced.

These are beautiful. I took my first trip to Boundary Waters in late August of this year with six other guys and it was a wonderful time. We spent two nights at the same site at Lower Basswood Falls and also had trouble finding a site while on Horse Lake. It's really neat to see the place again with all the fall colors!

Glad you enjoyed it Matthew! Great you were able to get the Lower Basswood site too... beautiful area. We were surprised how busy Horse was as well.

Hey Gary, Loved this one . I’ve been wanting to do this entry for awhile, but it gets snagged up pretty quick. Going up Knife from Moose to Eskar this Spring, last week of May. Will I see you on the portage?😀 Really enjoyed the extra videos footage too. Thanks as always for taking us along.

Thanks John! We were surprised how busy it was for October! I think a lot of people took advantage of the good weather and and the fact that no reservation was needed that time of year. Great trip though! We won't be meeting on the portage trail this Spring, we go in at Baker Lake in May and paddle towards N/S Temperance Lakes.. Eskar doesn't ring a bell... Ester maybe?

Very hard to beat the Fall, in the BWCA ! Great pics and video as Always Gary ! Looks like you had the Solo, pretty well loaded down ! We have camped in the area of the falls a few times ! The Pictographs are aging. Funny how they have out lasted many of Modern man's structures ! Loved the added Portage videos ! Every lake paddles about the same, but Portages ? Each has it's own character ! They stick in your memory, maybe because you walk them so many times ! Ha ! Your video made for a great evening ! Thanks ! Oh I almost for got ! What is that mat you use on the fire grate ? That is cool !

Ahh yes, the falls in the fall! As I age, the portages seem tougher for some reason 🙂Especially all the loading and unoading of the canoes on the rocky Horse River. We used the Yoshi copper mat... about $10 for two. Found in the 'As seen on TV' section in stores. We find it handy for cooking brats and toasting bread/ muffins. It doesn't like direct flame though. Thanks for watching Jim!

Love your photography. Are you using HDR? MY TRIP IN 2011 was Mudro up to the falls AND beyond. Grueling trip for a novice 63 year old. I was not given a single clue from our guide just how tough it would be. Made 48 portages in all with the double tripping. Hardly anytime for photography and 90+ temps all week. Wish we could've slowed down to take it all in.
@HamerNaturePhotos2 жыл бұрын
Thanks UnncleRed! No HDR blended images this trip. Years ago when the digital sensors didn't have a very good dynamic range, I would blend quite a few. But with the current sensors it is seldom needed. Our trips have slowed down considerably from the early years when we covered more miles/ portages. That trip you described sounds like a drag... shame on the leader for not letting you know what to expect. And temps in the 90s...wow, brutal!
