I think you're not reading between the lines when the big distilleries have cut back labor and production right before trump took office. We have been warned and promised a trade war and all countries have listed bourbon as something that will be tariffed to oblivion. I'm not sure why so many people are afraid to admit reality or are ignorant to what's really happening with the industry. Perhaps it is the fear that if you say anything negative about daddy trump, his entire cult will try to cancel you.

This is a really well-balanced and researched take by an actual expert. Its just like most things, people have overreactive hot takes on both sides. The truth on most issues, like this one, is probably somewhere in the middle. Someone said to me, "if you want to know today's real news, wait two weeks." With bourbon, if you want to know if "the boom is over," wait and see. In the meantime, enjoy what you enjoy.

My issue is pricing. 5 years ago a fantastic bottle could be had for $40-$50. Now those types of bottles are $80+ with many over $100 and they’re no better than they were before when they were cheaper. Those bottles have become a luxury for the average person and most of the time I don’t think the juice justify’s the price, there are some exceptions of course.

@@MadisonPours I’m Weller fan, but in my area (NW IA) it’s almost impossible to find and is marked up when I do find it. I’ve been lucky enough to try som Pappy’s and Bombergers, amongst other rare allocated whiskeys. But IMO, I’m don’t think the price is worth the bottle. I consider bourbon/rye as a consumable item and it has to perform to its price point. $150-$200 (or more) ain’t worth it to me for many bottles. It’s a tough market right now for sure.

As someone who turned 21 a year before the pandemic and drinking bourbon since a couple months after that, it's been ever evolving for acquiring bottles and chasing what everyone else wants. I consume lots of whiskey content on KZbin and podcasts, even going through the backlogs. I've found lots of joy in seeking out bottles that are more available (and local craft distillers) than the highly allocated bottles that rarely are seen on shelves. I go to raffles when I can and will stand in line just experiencing the stories that are shared with the people around me. I try to stay positive about all the experiences and know that this hobby is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. I look forward to being a lifelong bourbon drinker and enthusiast, and seeing what the future holds. Thank you Jason for this video and reminding us of what good the future will hopefully hold for American whiskey!

I can relate to the boom being over or at least slowing down substantially. I was a very low level collector prior to the pandemic, but during the pandemic my hunting and collecting got kicked into high gear. I now have so many bottles that I’ll likely never drink and taste so similar that i rarely buy any whiskey anymore. I’ll occasionally pick something up if it’s allocated or harder to find but only if i stumble upon it. I built a whiskey room during the pandemic that i still enjoy with friends, but mostly drinking through my current stockpile. I have another friend that was collecting and has now stopped as well. Neither of us regret collecting and have had fun but the excitement has tapered off for both of us.

Likewise, and the hunt has become a bore, it’s always just the same stuff on the shelf as stores, even big chain grocery stores, hide the allocated stuff in the back for their buddies. It’s taken the fun out of it. Even creating a relationship with a store manager in hopes of them saving you a bottle takes the fun out of it since you didn’t really hunt it up, it was there waiting for you…

@ I’ve became a fan of really aged rums, Cognacs and Armagnacs as they have such different flavor profiles. The beautiful thing about these three spirits is that they offer excellent value given the age of many are 25-50 year aged for $100-$200. Again, I’m a bourbon guy at heart, but getting to walk into any Total Wine and pick up a 30-40 year aged Armagnac at retail, which is under $200 any day of the week is awesome!

I'm looking forward to the day where I can buy a bottle of E.H.T SB for under $100 without having to buy $200 worth of store pics just to have the opportunity to buy the one bottle I want, which is already $30 - $40 overpriced. That to me is why the "bourbon boom" is ending because we people are just tired of it. Plus hearing stories that stores are starting to get Stagg Jr. bottles in from 2 years ago meaning they were sitting in a warehouse to purposely drive up demand or how stores have to buy pallets of fireball just to get a bottle of Bland-tons...that kind of nonsense.

I'm not surprised the bourbon bubble burst, but we're a long ways off from bottles either plunging in price or unicorns suddenly becoming duties. The economy has been tight and as a guy on a fixed income, I don't have the kind of bucks to spend on bottles as I once did. Maybe there will be consolidations to offset the labels that don't survive. I would expect stores to shave back their shelf space for bourbon, but Jason hits all the right notes here. Bourbon isn't going anywhere and it might not be an entirely bad thing if the explosion of labels (and hype) eased up.

Jason, this was a spot on discussion. I have lived in KY most of my life. The legacy distillers will weather this better than the last time. Compared to the 70s and 80, they have better financial backing now since they part of larger organizations. Will they slow down, yes but they are not going away. I also agreed with your observation about brands that have a social media backing. Evernorth and Pursuit are much more than the liquid. They have the goodwill that their founders provide. They are also nimble in that they can provide more quality experiences with their whiskey and their physical locations, as well as their get togethers.

This all seems like a good thing to me. Thins out the pretenders and prunes the over abundance of new craft distilleries that aren’t good enough to hold up. The quality distilleries that produce good products will be fine. I’ve been seeing the middle level bottles that were previously unobtanium all over the place and I’m loving it. The market had just grown way bigger than it ever should have. Sucks for people to lose jobs, but that’s the up and down nature of any free market.

I have also been switching to Rums. There are some good sippers like Doorly’s 12 yr that have plenty of oak and vanilla notes that can run with the best whiskies. Most aged rums are barreled in ex-bourbon oak barrels anyway. They take on similar characteristics at half the price. Having said this…..I still love my smoky barrel char tastes I get with my bourbons. You can still find decent sippers at $30-50.

I see some things I agree and disagree with in this video. For those claiming that bourbon is dead… a major retailer declared on Christmas Eve that they would be doing a major drop on Dec 28th and a line formed on Christmas Eve for a drop to take place 3 days later. Clearly some people still want bourbon. Some people say that the bourbon bubble has “popped.” Please. As long as you never ever see BTAC on the shelf and WLW sells for $1200 and KoK sells for $1600+, we are still in full bubble territory. That said, it will be a while until we see high aged product sitting on shelves. There is a sea of 10+ year MGP sitting in warehouses, but this is not the stuff Greg Metze distilled that we were drinking just 5 years ago. We have a few years left before the expansion stocks hit the shelves. In the meanwhile, a lot of people I know are switching to Tequila and other agave spirits. If you are sitting on a bunch of whiskey stocks expecting them to be valued in the stratosphere, sell out or drink up. Old Crow, the Buffalo Trace of its day, underwent a distillery expansion in the late 50’s and early 60’s just as Americans started drinking vodka. It was catastrophic. Old Crow Chessman is the last vestige of quality whiskey from that famed distillery that is now a bottom shelf brand owned by Beam Suntory. There are a lot of warnings from that era. We aren’t there yet, but the one thing consistent about America is that appetites change. Bourbon has seen ups and downs before.

Great topic 👍. My opinion is it’s overall a good thing for us bourbon drinkers cause many craft distillers who put out 1-3 year aged crap at $75 will be gone. And the legacy distillers will put out more higher aged and allocated bottles at cheaper prices. It’s already happening here in CA, Blanton’s Straight From The Barrel is selling for $190-$200 at independent liquor stores. A year ago I hardly saw that bottle and if I did it was +$300. Maybe ECBP will return to greatness again at 130+ proof and 12+ years, and Stagg and Weller bottles will be available on the shelf again for $100 or less, and we all get to drink bourbon like it’s 2010! 🎉

Stuff/allocation will continue to be expensive for a couple years, and once young product gets matured it will pick back up again I imagine. So about 5-10 years another boom will be back.

Couldn’t agree more on everything you touched on. Could you imagine the look on Jason’s face if he got asked to a gummy party? Would love to hear that interaction

I got in seriously around 2017, and I have no intention of stopping bourbon consumption, however, since 2022 started, I began really focusing on consuming what I have and basically stopped buying ANYTHING new for 2 years. Prior to that, I was easily spending 3-5k a year on bourbon. If I'm just one of many who behaved this way, I could see how that could be a huge shock to the market. ultimately, we'll see good bourbon on the shelf for perhaps even pre-pandemic prices.

Good video. I have to wonder how this impacts the investment Buffalo Trace made in doubling capacity? I have already seen the impact here with Buffalo Trace and Sazerac Rye on the shelf fairly often and have run across Weller SR and Eagle Rare a couple of times. I am hopeful especially for Buffalo Trace products, that more of them become at least occasionally shelfers for more and more people. ECBP and Larceny BP used to be pretty hard to get, but last couple years they have been pretty widely available (at least in my area). So Heaven Hill stuff is more available. I am good with some LEs that are still very hard to get, like BTAC and HH 18 etc. But those products that were intended to be shelf products I would like to see return to that at least in more capacity than it is now. I am also at a point, where $100 is my cutoff unless its something very special. There is just too many $100+ bottles that are good, but underwhelming for the price. Too many good, easy to get sub $100 out there. Can't say I have chased much, but finally learning the lesson everyone preached, and that is most of these bottles are just not worth secondary prices and many are also not even worth MSRP!

Great video as always! I hate that people have lost jobs but as a consumer I’m looking forward to the market correction. Hopefully that correction will correlate to the resurgence of quality and availability over quantity and price.🤞

Great content. Not sure if you are using some kind of a video filter or if you are output is mismatched between HDR/SDR but your videos look washed out like the black levels are greyed out compared to any other content I watch. Not sure if that's the intent, just something I noticed.

I think the industry has to be happy that they had such a long and strong run. It never goes up perpetually in any industry. Maybe this bubble is deflating, but the bourbon will keep coming. It will be interesting to see where and when the market levels out.

The amount of people needed to fall out of bourbon for Pappy to be back on the shelf unnoticed is not ever going to happen.

Probably true, though bt's billion dollar ramp up may put a lot of other stuff on the shelf.

I see many NDP going out and even some online services because of prices. Won’t mention what online service is currently offering a EC for 109 then you have to pay shipping that’s a pass for me. I’ll wait for the release from the distillery and get it for 75-80. I know I’ve made adjustments to my purchasing of bottles and what I’m willing to pay for a bottle. I’ll certainly continue to get my available bottles that are priced fairly and always on the shelf but will not be looking for overly priced limited releases and I refuse to buy anything over 100 anymore. I believe the big producers will start to see a reduction in sales of bottles priced at ridiculous rates. Just my thoughts but I’ve seen drops at my local store just sitting for weeks now. 🥃🥃🥃

I’m excited for a market correction. I’m tired of average whiskey being 60 bucks and new, uninteresting limited releases being 100. It’s made me go back to the daily sub 40 stuff and I’m enjoying it. I’ll get back in the game when the secondary market chills out
