Since March 2023, my wife and I started to renovate our first home down south of France (Cannes). It has been our dream to have a 100% self-made wood dining table. Thanks to all the channels of woodworking and DIY, especially this one, I managed to pull it off. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

The first half of the kzbin.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

I'm a metal worker who is trying woodworking and I am using math and a print for projects, in my profession we cant just put things together and make them fit so it's habit. We normally have an exact measurement with +/-0" tolerance we have to make happen. We know it will go together not hope, and if it doesn't it's because there is a problem somewhere that has to be corrected. I am going to try just winging it on a project to see how it comes out. I am learning a lot from you and others which is awesome thanks for showing great techniques and sharing your skill in your craft.

Great example of how easy you have made it to construct the angled legs. I love the templet idea, it sure is easier than how I've worked it out in the past. But then again, using your method will probably keep me from throwing the whole mess out into the middle of the road in frustration. Well done.

The other nice thing about cutting that type of half-lap on the miter saw is that you can easily cut at an angle. You would probably need a specific sled/jig to achieve similar results on the table saw
@MikeFaneros4 жыл бұрын
Very true, though on the table saw you'd just use a miter fence. Most table saws come with one. Or you can take a wedge at the appropriate angle and put it between the work piece and the back fence of a sled. I don't have a sliding miter saw, so his technique wouldn't work for me. There's so many ways to accomplish similar goals in the shop! :)

You should make the holes in the stretchers larger to allow for wood movement. it wont matter lengthways but the tabletop width will become larger and smaller due to humidity.

While you join the long pieces in line with the table top boards, making wood movement a non-issue, you then join those to the crosspieces of the base, which makes wood movement an issue again. What you could do is join them using an elongated hole and use some washers, so they could slide a bit when the top inevitably expands or contracts.
@zamfent4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this really confused me too. When the top expends laterally, it's going to try and force those stretchers apart, which are locked in place with dominos in the leg assemblies. Wouldn't z-clips all the way around the interior rectangle make more sense?
@luke98223 жыл бұрын
I understand the critique with what was done here, but do not really understand your solution. Can you explain your elongated hole and washer configuration?

That was really satisfying to watch and I learned that in a pinch and with some creative problem solving skills that doing math isn’t and shouldn’t be a pain you have to deal with to be a woodworker. Thanks. Also the sanding tip with the IPA was a super nice idea as I can only imagine because oak probably takes forever to sand. The part I loved the most was your design. It was simple and humble. The 3/4” Round Over bit helped the overall look be an inviting style to enjoy using as is that perfect finish. I can only imagine what the chairs would like. I’m imagining something with a 3/4” Round Over and a dowel design as a brace like this table has. Thank you. Side note, I personally have benefited from woodworking as a way to calm myself with all of the insane political junk going on that I don’t feel the need to even mention here. Wood has helped me feel more at peace knowing that hard work and a goal oriented attitude that can help carry a passionate idea to fruition is more practical and empowering than dealing with all the stress watching news can cause. That stuff should come with warning labels. Just saying. Thanks again and I feel inspired. You did excellent and deserve props. 👍🏻
