NBN GUITAR

Күн бұрын

Bach wrote many pieces for lute including the Bourrée in E-minor which is especially popular amongst guitarists. The piece is in simple binary form which means I was able to sneak the entire tutorial into a single and relatively short video!
I first learned this piece many years ago when I was still quite new to the guitar. From memory I learned it going into my second year of guitar study after watching Yngwie Malmsteen play it during a concert on television.
This is a great example of contrapuntal writing whereby 2 distinct melodic lines play simultaneously. When playing it's important to keep the lines separate where required and not to let one overpower the other.

Hi Richard. Players like you are one of the main reasons that I started my channel several years ago. I wanted to open up the classical guitar world to players of all levels by giving them a chance to learn pieces without needing to read music, or to players that don't have access to a teacher in their area.

For anyone wishing to learn this piece - THIS is the best lesson on KZbin, and you can believe me cos I've checked 'em all out. I started to learn the 2nd part of this piece a year ago but was defeated by the final few measures. I was just too ambitious/impatient, but I feel confident in having another shot at it armed with Josh's lesson. Josh, you are a generous man. Many thanks for making and sharing your classical guitar tutorials. Brilliant! Please do keep giving the suggestions on LH fingering, they make a very good starting place. Maybe a tutorial (or two!) on Classical Gas? Cheers!

Mike I'm blown away by your comments. I always hoped that my lessons would help someone but I never expected them to be held in such high esteem. I've tried to envisage myself as the person being taught and I hold onto that process and pattern throughout my lessons. The happiest part of your comment is that you're giving this piece another try. That is really really gratifying for me. It's so disheartening when for whatever reason you can't get to the end of a piece. To finally get something under your control is a truly wonderful thing. I'm happy to do make these tutorials and all the tabs and scores that go along with them. I aimed to help those that don't have access to decent teachers. I'm not saying I'm decent but I know what it's like to want to learn something but because you live in the middle of nowhere or there are no teachers around or perhaps finances are an issue it just isn't possible. I've actually been thinking about Classical Gas. I start the Questions & Answers video with that piece. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX3dgKJuq9qWmNk I guarantee you that these tutorials will be rolling out for a long long time. Cheers Mike!

Hi Kenneth. You're totally welcome mate. There's more than a few people out there in the same boat as you - technique well in advance of their tab/music reading ability. That's one of the reasons that I made the lessons the way I did so hearing your feedback is great. The way you can donate is just to pay for the tabs (they're free but you can actually enter any $ amount when you download them), or you can pay for a full score that has tabs & sheet music :D Thanks again

I got the sheet music from the Wikipedia page for this piece and on the final passage you are playing the bass notes an octave lower, how come? I think it sounds better the way you do it. You also use a lot of different fingers and positions through the song to what the sheet music suggests, have you tried it other ways before? Is this way easiest? I'm trying to learn it but the middle and end section can be played in so many different places on the neck I struggle to work out what is best. Thanks! Great vid
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Joey. I just like it that way. To me it sounds better when the notes are spread farther apart. I have fingered it my way which is something I suggest you do too. Each guitarist ends up developing their own unique way of doing things and in that respect I am no different. I wouldn't say it's the easiest but it works for me and that's the most important thing. Determine what works for you and go!
@ladybeard99
@ladybeard99 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! I have just managed to memorise the sheet music so after I really get the tune into my fingers I can try adapting it to how you play it and go from there. I may post a video when I feel confident performing the whole thing, although the speed may be slower than most haha.

How do you tune your guitar to e minor??
@viacheslavkravchenko3370
@viacheslavkravchenko3370 5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to, this piece should be played in the standard guitar tuning. "In E minor" just means that the piece is written in the E minor key. If you want more understanding of that, you can read about music keys.

Viacheslav Kravchenko thanks
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 5 жыл бұрын
As Viacheslav has correctly stated no retuning of the guitar is necessary. Many composers back in the day would include the key of the piece in the name. I'm not sure why that particular trend started yet it existed and is still used today however it's modern use is generally restricted to etudes.

I've been working on this for a month now. I'm at a point where I've just hit a wall. There are parts where I nail it then at the very end I have to slow it down. Very frustrating. Do you ever feel a need to take a break? How long did it take you to nail this?
@nbnguitar
@nbnguitar 6 жыл бұрын
I'd say take a look at the positive side - you've learned the entire piece (that's already huge)! As far as having to slow down at the end can be viewed in a couple of ways. Firstly, you may be playing too fast anyway. Secondly, you may not know it as well as you think therefore your fingers haven't developed adequate muscle memory for that section - hence the slow down. Make sure you're using a metronome and only play the end section. Don't waste your time playing the parts that you're already confident with. Once you're up to speed with the trickiest section the rest will seem like a breeze. I think everyone needs to take a break from time to time and that's perfectly natural Josh. I learned this many many years ago so I don't remember how long it took to nail :)

Set yourself a BPM goal and work towards it incrementally. Push that metronome to the limit on a daily basis and watch some other players because I don't have much speed. I'd suggest listening to Moran Wasser.
