A terrific programme! God, do I miss Viv... The man was a genius; uniquely gifted and incredibly funny. There will never be another Vivian Stanshall. God bless the ginger geezer...

His comic timing was great. That part where he smiles and says "most people's names are shut-up, as I'm sure you know" made me laugh hysterically.

Met the Bonzos, via LP, in the U.S. in my early university years (about '73); I think they played Detroit a time or two (warming up for Cream?), but alas I was too wee a tad; a shame! I still number Viv as one of The Beautiful Voices of English.

Crank is a fabulous piece of work. Viv's work was pretty sporadic, wrecked by his additions. But when you see him at his best, as in this, you've got to agree with the late lamented Mr Peel. He should be a celebrated and famous person. On a more trivial note last minute of Geezer best baritone sax solo ever.. Not that there's a lot of competition for that particular honour.

Viv had his own radio show for a short time on Radio 1 around 1970. Can anybody remember the name of it? There was a slot on it called 'Cooking Mice-Wise'.

This must be when John Peel took an extended holiday and unwisely left his Radio 1 timeslot in the capable hands of Viv Stanshall, with John Walters trying to exercise some degree of control over the ensuing mayhem. Viv Stanshall had a whale of a time, poor Walters nearly had a nervous breakdown. Viv was completely unreliable, unpredictable, and arrived unprepared for his two hours or so of radio stardom - no script, no running order, and only a half-formed idea of how he was going to fill the unforgiving minutes of airtime. Walters was left to produce order out of chaos, and it's a tribute to the man that something reasonably coherent was broadcast. I can't remember the title of the show but it's out there somewhere - as is a KZbin video of someone reading a letter of complaint from an outraged listener demanding to know what it was he'd just been listening to. In these shows Viv launched into some free-wheeling monologues which quickly became a continuation of the saga of Rawlinson End. I think it was a relief for all concerned (except perhaps Viv) when Peel returned to re-establish some sort of control and order over his show.
