The first time I heard "Yelp, Bellow, Rasp, etc." from Men Opening Umbrellas Ahead I bawled like a baby. What a genius! Why, oh why did such a man have to hurt so Goddam much just to get up in the morning?

To my shame, I must confess I've never seen this before...so thanks for sharing this...Stanshall was an absolute genius..eccentric..yes...but so quintessentially English in both these traits

I taped this off the telly back in the day & somehow wiped over it a few months later. Outraged by my clumsiness I wrote to J. Peel wanting to know where I could find it again. He scrawled a friendly reply on the same piece of paper I'd sent admitting he had no idea. Thanks for uploading, matey

Don van Vliet and Vivian spoke about ART. They were both artists/painters and wordsmiths.

God, John Peel. Now there's a bloke who did so much to introduce British music to the States. Both he and Viv are very much missed by this Yank.

I used to live near him in Muswell Hill in the years before his death. I often saw him strolling through the streets, bare-legged (even in winter), wearing a flimsy kimono and leaning on some kind of shepherd's staff. On every occasion he looked utterly haunted. There's a lot of mystification about the symptoms of alcoholism and associated addictions when manifest in celebrities but in reality it's as ugly and depressing as it is for everyone else. Stanshall used to buy his booze at the "Venus" off-licence along with the area's street alkies, who he would invite back home to his flat for recreation. They stole most of his instruments and other valuables. He died in bed having set fire to it. A great talent lost to addiction.

I think you're wasting your time, old chap. These bottom-feeding types below neither understand Stanshall's genius, nor will they ever touch as many lives as he did with their pointless little existances. RIP St. Viv.

Stanshall was king of the arty farty nutters for a while and - if he had had the talent and determination - could have become an international name after Urban Spaceman. Alas, this was not a sane person acting out his irrational drives but an insane person becoming less and less able to feign rationality - a sort of Spike Milligan gone wrong. This surreal Dada-esque comedy is charming in the young...ish (Monty Python, etc) but unpleasant in the middle aged: it is expected by then they would have evolved into something more structured or at least less childish. Stanshall comes across as a needy child craving attention any way he can get it while desperately propping up his crumbling ego with a collection of strange souvenirs, artefacts and pursuits - all of which seem to highlight where his life went wrong.

"Jimmy spent a packet on a real leather jacket With a lotta zip. And greasing back his hair in the mirror Jimmy learnt How to curl his lip....etc..etc.. Brilliant number...if you have it then post it. Luv you ....bye !
