My dad was an industrial manufacturing engineer. On days he had to inspect the production line, he wore a bow tie. Safety concerns. A long necktie could get caught it the machinery. He taught me how to tie a bow tie. He told me a mark of a gentleman is knowing how to tie a bow tie.
@olbradley Жыл бұрын
I feel like a waistcoat and/or tie clips could easily solve that problem.
@mateofenn6 ай бұрын
@@olbradleyI wouldn't imagine that would be practical or appropriate given the job. A waistcoat is going to be far too formal and a tie clip doesn't exactly solve the problem. If the end of the tie gets caught on machinery then you're still bad off.

@@mateofenn waistcoats are not that formal however, most of the work environments are not cold enough to wear jacket with a vaistcoat. as a student myself, i can barely wear a 3 piece suit in buildings.

I remember a high school friend showing me how to self-tie a bow tie for the first time, a gentlemanly skill that has served me well for decades. I currently wear a bow tie at least once every two weeks, and I have a sufficient collection, including a couple of vintage ties, to keep me from repeating most of the year. Bow ties are stylish, fun, and surprisingly versatile for a confident, well dressed man. Women definitely seem to notice an appropriate a gentleman sporting the right bow tie look. Thanks for this video and your other great bow tie offerings.

It is only within the last four years or so that I have been wearing bow ties with other than formal wear and I've taken quite a shine to them. I wear a suit every day and it is accentuated by bow ties a little less then half the time. People love or hate this neck wear but my CPD (Compliments Per Day) noticeably increase when sporting one of these. Love your show.

I am 75 and a retired librarian and university library administrator. I was in the college glee club, and I needed to know how to tie a bow tie, because we wore tuxedos. I was taught by a shy, blonde rich kid from Virginia and Maryland who loved to ride his horses and pined away for his family and farms. He showed my how to do it and I almost immediately, at the age of 21, started to appear in a bow tie. I gave all but the top two or three examples of straight ties to my son years ago. I have always found the bow tie makes a statement, and the first rule is, if you don't know you have the panache to pull it off, don't even try it. My rich friend succumbed to homesickness and left college at Thanksgiving time of his freshman year. He eventually became a great point-to-pointer in Virginia and Maryland, and died young in his late 50s of cancer. He was a real aristocrat and gentleman.

I have started to get into bow ties. Years ago I was given a pre tied sky blue satin bow tie which I still have but never really wear anymore. I currently have 3 others which I do wear. First is what I think is known as a Kentucky bow tie (bootlace bow tie). The one I have is black polyester but is much longer than other types of these ties I have seen. The second is a Donegal Tweed navy bow tie which I bought to wear when I am wearing dark blue waistcoats. The 3rd I bought recently is a cotton brown bow tie that is a high quality copy of a 19th century bow tie like you see in photos of men like American civil war officers and Abraham Lincoln wearing. I might get one in black as well at some point.

I have heard it said that most men wear bow ties because most men don’t. I have a large collection, and all are tie-it-yourself, batwing because I have a short neck. I used to travel from California to Boston & Washington DC, and would drop in to better men’s stores and pick from a large selection. In those days at large conferences everybody wore suits, but I was the only bow tie in the room.

Love to wear bow ties, but mostly in the fall, winter and spring seasons. In the summer months, when you wear a coat, there is just to much open space between the top of your belt buckle and the bottom of your bow tie. In the colder seasons, a waistcoat or sweeter breaks up that space and looks good with a jacket. Just my opinion- Regards

Its interesting because, when I was younger, I was fully convinced the bow tie was a dead fashion. However, as I've gotten older I've seen them a lot more often than I would have expected, and they've actually worked very well for the wearer. They had a tendency to be associated with nerds in days past, but the men wearing them pulled off a sharp and clean look that surprised me!

I find it really odd that the most expensive bow ties out there from places like Tom ford, brioni, Prada, Gucci, Armani, or kiton are pre tied. They want you to spend anywhere from 180-360 bucks on a pre tied elastic clip bow tie. It sucks too because some of the designs are awesome and I won’t wear one unless I tie it myself. Maybe I’m being a snob.

I was interested to note the stand-up wing type of collar promoted in this video for black tie. In the latest Sartorial Talks video by Hugo Jacomet, in conversation with French designer Marc Guyot, both were adamant that it is a sartorial mistake. They explained that wing collars are for white tie only, and black tie should use a turn down collar. Who is correct? Could this be an example of there being a set of rules that are right in Europe and another set that are right in North America?
@carltrotter76222 жыл бұрын
By modern standards, you're right. Traditionally, however, Black Tie was made to be the same as White Tie but with a jacket instead of a tailcoat. Yes, this continues into the 40s with people like Astaire wearing a stand-up collar, but it wasn't until the Prince of Wales adopted the turndown collar in the 30s that a Turndown was more widely accepted. I hope this helps and you have a splendid day, -Carl

That’s what’s good about bow ties, you can’t do that. If you pull on the doubled part it just tightens the knot, not around your neck but just makes it harder to take off. And if you pull the single part it just un does the knot.
