How fascinating and what an honour for you to be involved with that Matthew ! I have visited the museum a number of times living just down the road and been fortunate enough to see the swan fully operational. Great vid Thankyou

Thank you, appreciated.

It would be awesome to have a virtual simulation of the inner guts. Is there any chance that Swan will be fully taken apart for maintenance, so every part could be 3D-scanned? In case some modules can´t be disassembled, there are high-resolution CT scanners available.

Hi Paul. I couldn't agree more. There are all sorts of benefits to this including the opportunity to operate the object less. STEM, design, engineering, acces etc etc. I'm totally with you on that. M

I wish you scanned the parts so someone could 3d print this.

I totally agree. I think it was a missed opportunity both times the machine was in bits. It would have been a great way to share it and understand it more widely. Good point. M

I hope swan can be repaired to the point where it operates exactly as it did when first conceived and constructed. If it could be done then , then surely it can be done now. I guess it all boils down to money.

Hio Brian. As you say, that is certainly achievable - to recreate that work. The Bowes museum has a new Director and I'm sure they have ambitious plans to move things forward so watch this space!

What a brilliant video of SWAN. Thank you so much for the posting. It's our history that you are preserving and renewing. Are you going to make and extended video of the repairs done. It would be most interesting. For us and posterity.

Thanks for the feedback. I think any future work will be extensively documented and communicated yes! M

Excellent video. So nice to see an update of this mechanism. Is there a video which shows details of the mechanism, working or replaced? It's unfortunate that it seems there are no detail records from the 1960-70's restoration. Involved with pipe organ building/restoration, changes and details of an instrument are kept on record.

If you want to turn it off, make an exact working copy of it so that people can still see an active version while you do what you need to do to the original. It's a machine. Machines NEED to work or they seize up and shut down permanently (see what happens to your car if you don't run it regularly!). With care, it can run for hundreds more years quite happily. It should not be frozen in aspic like a statue (as it was for many years).

not having it operate at least on a special occasions basis is killing it and defeating the purpose of why it was made. it needs to live to inspire, which it can even in a world of cheap plastic halloween 'automata,' if you're so generous to call them that.

This should be more valuable than the Monalisa.
