On this episode of Mississippi Outdoors TV, we went bowfishing on the Mississippi River, catching the second largest alligator gar in Mississippi history.

Love bowfishing, but wish they protected the alligator gar. It's one of the few species that preys on the asian carp destroying our river systems.

Yeah I love shooting. But I believe they've shortened the time your allowed to hunt for these and made the Asian carp year round. I don't see them ever going away sadly... They're like zebra muscles... Smh

Im. 60 years old and have seen the big gator gar population decimated with bow fishing ,I grew fishing the Trinity river and have seen their numbers decline. The one thing about bow fishing there is no catch and release

@@brians48now My question for you is if gator gar are "Trash fish" why kill them, they play an important role in the ecosystem. I am personally all for healthy hunting/fishing and bow fishing is a great way to do it, but if you take away predatory species you risk losing a valuable ecosystem. Plus in my opinion, they don't taste all that great.

Limit on Alligator Gar is 2 per person. Longnose gar is what most of those that were shot were. No limit on those

I would tell you good luck normally but if there is a carp problem I don't understand killing gar . It's sad to say but this is why the carp keep spreading and taking over. But the dnr there should do something its their job and area of expertise

Damn. Yea realistically that fish probably loses a gallon of blood or more. That was a 190 plus possibly 200 lb fish. I’d really like to know an exact age.

I use an old cool whip tub to coil my string into. I use a 150# Horton Yukon compound crossbow with AMS fishing bolts. Great fun,ain't it?

I don't feel this 2 guys are true sportsmen . Love to fish and hunt . But to kill a 100 year old fish that eats Asian carp sounds irresponsible to me .

Maybe a 15-20 year old- no where near 100. They don't eat enough asian carp to make a difference either way.

Working on the river out of Memphis, I've taken my crossbow & fishing bolts to shoot from whatever barge we were shoving at the Asian carp jumping out of the water. I'd have so much fun that the towboat pilot would let me drive going back while he took a turn at it.

Some do. They have one piece of backstrap that I've heard is good if prepared well. It's gamey and very fishey. The other parts are poisonous. You need to know what your doing. Lol you need a sawza to cut through the armor & a Sharp fillet knife .

Nice. I would love to get a alligator gar. Here in NC I just have flounder, skate, gar, and carp I bowfish for. Drop a barb in a big skate and hold on. Makes great scallops!
