We knew it was not a great day to hunt. In fact, we knew it was a bad day to hunt, but we decided to find out if any deer would move when the baseline winds are in the 20s with gusts into the 40s. Now we know! We plan to head back to the same spot tomorrow to see how much difference better conditions make on deer movement.

Hey Bill! Glad to see Jordan with you. Wow what a wind. We have had lots of wind here in southern Virginia as well. As a mamma of a girl myself I know Jordan is a treasure!! My husband and I look forward to seeing your videos.

Hunted a bottom in a windstorm, saw close to 40 deer that evening. The other 4 guys on the lease saw 0. That day I learned they still move in the wind, just not where it is windy ;) Appreciate the continued content Bill!

Awesome video love the tough conditions an you guys going out ! Something about those days are just so memorable. Went one time in 23 below with wind chill temps, my buddy brought a sleeping bag said if he didn’t get one he was spending the night! We all couldn’t stop laughing needless to say he covered up in it an we still use that method till today when the temps drop like that. Keep up the videos love watching them an look forward to them right before I head out to hunt. Thanks

Bill. Friday here and the winds are only a breeze. In 20’s and have seen one buck. Several does cross my field. Yesterday two does. 25 mph is about my cutoff to hunt. With that said you can’t get one if you are out there. Glad to see you still grinding this late season. Good luck to Jordan and you on your quest!,

I've argued this topic for years. As long as the temps are tolerable, give me high winds over calm anyway. Problem is, so many get hung up sitting over foodplots/ field edges. Get in tight cover,thick cover and hunts can be superb. High winds can actually CONSENTRATE deer in certain spots. Good to see you back Jordan.

That makes sense. My trail cameras showed that. The deer were actually out on the plots down in the valleys that evening.

That Alberta Clipper rolled through here, too. All activity on the trail cameras stopped for 24 hours. Picked back up last night. Western PA deer don't like high winds (and snow) either.

Never give up...I shot my biggest black bear in hard rain and wind...527 lbs. My second biggest buck was shot when it was raining and a stiff wind (in the woods). If I had stayed home, I would have been dry and my tags would have not been filled. Rock on!

Christmas is coming Bill. May want to get Jordan a pair of heated gloves. The technology is there these days……finally. You’ll get her out there more often. That much wind is real tough, especially when it’s hitting you in the face all day like it did to me on Thanksgiving. Cudos for giving it a shot, on to late season, hopefully with some cold temps.

Hunted years ago in wind like that with my recurve. Had a buck come by shot 5 arrows that the wind blew off course. The 6th and last arrow in the quiver aimed at his last rib and hit him in the shoulder. Needless to say, that was my last hunt in a wind strom.

I have an interesting question for you, Bill. I have a large track of timber that I hunt, but most of the deer are currently living to my north.. my neighbor to the north east has a standing cornfield and I have a big southwest facing ridge on my place that leads right up to that field. I also have a very large wide flat bottom that the deer like to transition from south the north using a lot. Here’s where it gets interesting. A couple weeks ago a 190 class deer started using this area that I’m hunting. He moved in from a mile away and seems to have stayed. about a week and a half ago He came onto my farm for the first time ever used a scrape made an hour or so loop checked a couple does and then left shortly before daylight. Now 2 nights ago he came from my farm used the scrape left and went north around an hour after dark but he wasn’t on any of my cameras besides this one. What’s your take? I do have a 1 acre very nice radish plot a few hundred yards south of that scrape that several deer that live on me stage in before heading north of evenings. What do you think the odds are at this buck may continue to make visits to my farm in search of late does? This is also a very large contiguous track of connecting timber from other landowners as well.

I would think it would NOT be advantageous to hunt in that wind, but I've been proven wrong many times. I remember 3 years ago on Opening Day of rifle they were advising hunters to NOT be in tree stands since it was so dangerous. I admit it was a little scary with the pine moving back and forth and hearing loud thumps when trees broke and fell, but I had an 8pt sneak (couldn't hear a thing) in behind me not even 2 yards from ladder stand.

That's a good one. I once hunted Kansas in a wind storm. I was hunting from a small tree and I had to literally press my feet against the stand platform forcing back against the tree to keep from being thrown out when the wind gusted. Believe it or not, I actually shot a buck that day! The wind did die though after a while.

Can it be too cold or windy? Absolutely, the deer won't move in my neck of the woods if the temps are below 20° and if you see a deer in high winds....its because she was pushed out from a limb snapping or other factors

I guess sitting in high wind isn’t so good but I would think that if you know where the deer are, sneaking into the wind might work, at least if gun hunting. Good effort though .

I wonder if you’d have to aim to right or left let wind blow arrow into target.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 2 ай бұрын
For sure you would. With the wind blowing that hard the arrow would definitely drift. I am not sure how much, but at 20 yards I bet it would be a few inches with a 25 mph crosswind. Good question.

Have you ever thought that since you're not hunting a high deer density area. Maybe you should not shoot so many does. That way, you have more deer for the future... it sure seems like you have enough food for the deer density in your area! Your new farm is not anything like southern Iowa
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 2 ай бұрын
I have thought about it, but for now I want the herd to grow slowly so I can get my habitat projects established and thriving before there are lots of deer around to eat that stuff. This is more of a long-term approach to managing this farm. Eventually it will pay off with really good habitat, lots of browse and a sustainable number of really healthy deer - some of which will grow big antlers. But you can't have tons of deer if you want really good habitat. I know that from a lot of personal experience. I have been down the "lots of deer" path where they literally eat everything - especially on drought years. I have owned land where the deer ate 300 acres of standing corn during a dry summer! Not exaggerating. There was nothing left in the timber for browse. Yes, that is the extreme, but I want to stay on the conservative side of the density curve for now. I have seen what happens when you get on the other side.

@bill-winke sounds like you have a good plan. I hope it works out for you. Keep up the good footage, I enjoy watching! I, too, have been doing may habitat projects just across the river in wisconsin. My dad was fortunate to harvest a 203" monster buck because of our habitat projects.
