Bowhunting Water Holes! (Deer, Turkey, Elk, Pronghorn and Pigs)

Same here another fellow Alabama hunter always considered hunting over water but there’s such an abundance of it where I hunt it’s basically pointless.

I'm in Louisiana and I've had my cameras over small ponds since memorial day. It seems I'm getting less pictures than usual. I need to research how much water deer get from broadleaf plants.

I hunt in West Central IL. I can attest to the fresher the better and in cover. There is a spring 200y from a river that is real close to bedding and a south facing hill. The deer flock to that during the day vs going to the river.

Water abundant here in Kentucky. My understanding, deer get most of their moisture during the summer time from the green plants they eat. After green vegetation dries up in the Fall, deer depend more on creek and pond water sources. Most of my trail cam action shows them coming to water sources after dark.

We don't have ponds on our property. But we have spring fed streams that go into a wetland/swamp that feed lake redstone in Wisconsin. There's always tracks around the 2 but I never hunt them. No good reason why I don't lol. If I get out early season I'll give it a shot .

Mississippi dear, lab did a study on this . Believe it or not, deer tend to go to water sources in woody browse more often in the winter than they do in the summer. This is because everything they eat in the summer contains water. The leaves and browse contain more water than you could imagine.

Ponds work in Texas and out west in open flat places with less green vegetation and water is more scarce.

The older fellers that started my hunting shack back in the day thought they needed a water hole. The pond they dug turned into a beaver haven. Now we have an 80 acre swamp of cat tails and pussy willows that the old fellers refuse to step foot into. Some years, the rest of the property is so flooded that we have to wait until freeze before we can hunt it. The bear sure seem to be enjoying it.
