Thanks ,Rob. I bet FlatHead and bignose would be proud of me for doing these videos. I love it when people mention them because if it werent for them, I would have never set foot in the woods. I too love DIY and Bushcrafting both. Have a great weekend and thanks for watching my friend.

Thanks man! My old mentors taught me to always find more than one use for an item you carry. I figured since the bowl was alittle large and bulky by backpacker standards that I should find four uses for it, Ha Ha. Take care and thanks for watching my friend.

Well, When I got done with the Shovaxe test video, I only had a week before the big annual shutdown at the papermill where I work. I was going to work three weeks straight ,12 hours days with no time off. I had a week to film these and I only had the chance for Nick to help on the oven one. I wished he could have done them all but ,he was in school while I filmed. Im glad you liked them, thanks for watching my friend.

Cool! Im glad you liked it. If I had the time I'd love to flood the market with these sets. As far as selling you on these, Funny story. I showed up with a big bowl set up at a cub scout camp. I had a die hard backpacker laugh at my big bowl. Over that weekend, I made chili, fried chicken livers and onions, a pie, cornbread and apple smoked brim. the guy asked for plans and measurements for the system on sunday, Ha Ha. Take care and thanks for watching my friend.

I love smoking food, even at home. Smoking on the trail is a great way of preserving lots of food on the trail to carry with you. Funny you mention fish. Last summer Nick and I tried putting chopped up, smashed up pink grapefruits in the pan and steaming some fish. The flavor was unbelievable. I may do that in a video in the future. Im glad you liked them , thanks for watching my friend.

Well, alot of folks missed these four videos for some reason. I think when I upload more than one at a time they get lost in the mix. I had no idea on the liquid smoke, thats a pretty cool tip to know. The only reason I used the pan with the wet chips is because when they are in the fire and dry they burn up super fast. When they are wet, it takes forever for them to burn up giving more time to smoke and alittle steam in the process. Im glad you liked it bro, thanks for watching my friend.
@Reallybigmonkey112 жыл бұрын
Im glad you enjoyed it Peter. I have always loved smoked food, It took alot of ruined food before I stumbled onto the idea for the wet chip tray. that was the key to slow smoking and edible food, Ha Ha. thanks for watching my friend.

Hmmm, now thats a new one to me. I guess it would work if it acted like an insulator. I have had luck a few times using a bowl like this to keep food cold in the mountains in summer time a few times. I found a spring, ran a split sitck from the spring into the bowl and let it fill and overflow. I put plastic bags of raw fish in the bowl and the cold spring water was constantly over flowing and refilling the bowl with cold water.It worked great. Thanks for watching my friend.

Thanks brother! It took a lot of experimenting and ruined food to figure out what worked the best. The key to this is the wet wood chips in the tray over the fire. Straight fire drys the food too fast and adds little smoky flavor. Try it, you'll love it! take care and thanks for watching my friend.

Very good question, this is not for when youre very hungry of for small amounts of food. This is for when you have lots of food or food left over that you want to preserve for the trail or that you want to keep edible for days at a time. Any meat smoked on the trail will last quite a lot longer than cooked. Im glad you liked it, Thanks for watching my friend.

Certain woods yes, You need dry hickory, applewood, cherry,mulberry, maple and all oaks. You never smoke with green wood or any wood that resionous like pine. some woods give a nasty flavor and some like Oleander could possibly kill you with toxins in the food.You can also use some grape vines. I once used a dried up old muscadine vine to smoke some fish and it tasted incredible.Be sure to properly identify the vine before you use it tho. Im glad you like the vids,Thanks for watching my friend.

Ive had fish on it before, its really good. Get this, one time, I took a grapefruit and cut it up and crushed it into the pan. I put some fish on the grill and I honestly dont know if I was smoking it or steaming it but man o man was it good! I'm gonna try that with lemons or limes in the future. I use this method whenever I can. thanks for watching my friend.

O.K. what you have to look for is this, if theres little smoke, and mostly heat, youre only cooking the food and it will not be safe. You have to make sure that the hot smoke is covering and coating the food. The smoking process actually coats the food and makes it safe to carry. I have carried pork and fish this way for up to 3 days. I always eat it up by the 3rd day tho and never got sick from it. I havent tried to keep any past 3 days yet Hope this makes sense, thanks for watching my friend.

Im glad you liked it, They way I smoke it with the pan full of wet chips, is easy. If the chips are dry or if you use straight fire, the meat gets dried out with no flavor at all. Its like a shoe sole. The wet chips allow very slow smoking putting really good flavor in the meat and sealing in a few juices. It takes between 1 and two hours depending on the size of the meat and the outdoor temp. Ive smoked fish in the summertime in 30 mins. Thanks for watching my good friend.

Thanks! All this processes with a bowl are quite simple but yes, part three is a pain to keep the fire around the out side and not under it. Under it would be cooking, not baking. I have eaten a few rattlesnakes in the past and they are very very good. You can eat every bit of it except for the head. You might could be, even after its dead a prick of the teeth could stick get some venom in you if it breaks your skin. Cottonmouth snake tastes horrible. Take care and thanks for watching my friend

It took about 30 mins. Fish takes about 15 to 20. I always cut the meat into fairly thin strips because the chips in the pan always burn up before it has time to fully smoke a big hunk of meat. Thanks for watching my friend.

Oh man is it ever good! I have smoked a lot of meat on the trail like this and it usually turns out quite good. I smoked some fish like this and ate it 7 days later and didnt get sick so this is a viable option for storing food to eat in the wild. Thanks for watching all 4 parts my friend.

It probably would have helped it if was very windy. I kinda noticed that a guard choked off the air to the fire. I like having good healthy flames going to the pans making smoke and steam. I also had the steam pan pretty close to the bowl so alot of it got trapped. Now, if I was just smoking from the fire and not the pan, yes, absolutely some kinda wind guard would help. Thanks for watching my friend.
