This is by far the clearest explanation that I have seen. I had terrible trouble with this knot. I could get it to work once then never again after I saw other videos. I have no idea why. I just couldn't do it from memory - until this one. Thanks

Thanks so much! I watched your rope ladder video and was struggling with the bowline. Gonna exercise til I can do it in my sleep

I have no idea why but after trying 10 videos this is the only one that didn't slip for me the first time and every time after that. Thank you!

When you are dressing the knot try to make sure the very first loop you made keeps its form. If that first loop straightens out, which is very easy to do, the bowline will become a slip knot.

It took me a lot of trials and errors, and I kept getting occasional failures, until I figured out what you just said. The core loop doesn't even have to straighten out: If it inverts to face the other way, which can happen very easily while tying, the whole thing will turn into a slip knot. What's worse, you can actually spread the two loops to lock it, and it will look like it's locked but will fail catastrophically under tension. I think this is an inherently unstable knot. A double lineman's loop is the only other solid alternative I can think of.

Thanks. Dressing the knot is important to prevent slips

Just a thought, why not continue making a complete bowline before flipping the bight end over the loop?

I never draw it tight by pulling the standing end. The loop sometimes flips and the knot becomes Slipknot.

How is this knot used? Is there an advantage of having two loops at the end?
@arriannadurrance5435
@arriannadurrance5435 Жыл бұрын
Its main use is when you need a temporary fixed loop and you can't get at either end of the line. Or even as a boatswain's chair, 2 lines makes it more comfortable to work in

I thought that this should allow tension from end to end. When I tie it, it will collapse when I add tension. Am I doing it wrong, or was I mistaken about the use of this?

Be sure guys you are practicing it with a rope that is not kinked and twisted which can make you get confused once you are finished with the knot.

Hi, That is not something going off and on: it's our cockatoo on another floor wanting Dave to come upstairs. He's very loud. :) Angi

How would you say this compares to a double alpine butterfly? Is there any time to prefer one over the other?
@Enword_Jim
@Enword_Jim Жыл бұрын
Old comment, and I've only ever used a regular Alpine Butterfly, but the advantage of a Bowline is it's always easy to untie even after very heavy loads, Alpine Butterflys are great for light loads but are a bear to untie if they've been loaded heavily.

I have taught myself the wrong way and create a slipping knot. I fix it by reorientation of the two loop knots don’t know why it works.

I figured out why mine wasn't working, if this helps anyone. The mistake comes at tightening. If I pull this together from the wrong side, the "head" splays opens and butterflies around the knot. At that point this no longer looks like a bowline, and it slips. 2.29 above show it properly, where the head doesn't open and instead cinches on the lead. If that makes any sense at all.

Gregory Wall you can reverse that slip to the proper knot by pulling the loophole so it opens on the other side of the cinching loop

What you also need to point out is the fact that 100% of the success of this knot being tied ( the way you instruct it) is predicated on the type of rope you are using. A nice slick cover is required for everything to slide in place - if your line cover is chafed or if you use a line with a lot of friction (ie frayed lines) this doesn't turn out so well.
