This knot is known by a couple of other names as well, Bowline on a Coil and the French Bowline. The great thing about this knot is that it creates two fixed loop knots on the end of a rope that are adjustable. It allows you to dress your knot to form two equal distance loops. This is especially advantageous in towing and lifting applications.

Wow!! Now that is a knot with 1000's of applications! You have not only showed how to tie the Portuguese Bowline you have demonstrated how to tie it in an application that is very practical! Thank you!

I read this read as Portuguese Brownie, and thought you were doing a cooking segment using tools. Lol. Still happy to learn a new knot.

I learnt this knot as the French bowline over 40 years ago. Had not heard it called Portuguese before. I suppose France is only separated from Portugal by Spain. I also like to use the Spanish bowline. May as well keep the fancy stuff in the one region.

It’s actually known by both names. I just learned it as the Portuguese Bowline. There’s actually quite a few knots out there that have double names.

Great to see a simple way to tie it on rather than just making loops.

You confused me at first because this is (k)not the standard Portuguese Bowline as listed in Ashley's Book of Knots (ABOK) # 1072. Instead, this is a variation listed as ABOK # 1073. Thanks for posting. I'm trying to track down as many of these bowlines and variations as I can.

Thanks for all your videos about knots. I have a specific question here: Can the Axle Hitch be used anywhere you would use the Portuguese bowline? To me they look very similar and the Axle Hitch you show in another video has the quick release feature.

In an axle hitch, the distance between the kalmyk and the double loop can get larger - which means that the two loops are getting smaller. The portuguese bowline doesn't doesn't run the risk of constricting the loops like that. But yes, they're very similar in many other respects.

According to Raoul Graumont's 1945 'Handbook of Knots,' the French and Portuguese bowlines are definitely different, and are illustrated so by his rather murky illustrations.
