I would flinch. I believe in biology and the result of billions of years of evolution.

A well-timed earthquake could mess up this experiment badly!

Have someone else release the ball from above and behind your head. That really tests your belief in the conservation of energy ( and in your posture stability). Plus... if it hits you, its not actually going very fast. I had it detach from the ceiling hook (forgot to close the hook ) on the backswing and the volunteer target student took it in the nuts. No long term damage. Luckily.

but why does it not hit you?

Friction forces, such as air resistance, cause the pendulum to lose some of its momentum, slowing it down as it swings. Because it's a heavy pendulum, it only slows a small amount per swing. As a result, it loses enough momentum to not hit you, while still getting very close to your face. It can still easily hit you if you accidentally push the ball as you release it, as the extra energy would make it swing further than if it was only propelled by gravity. Also, it will hit you if you lean forward after releasing the ball.

Because it's never going to swing back further than it was dropped from.
