Bowling Ball Types and Cover Stocks Explained

Gretchen and Thomas explain the many different bowling ball coverstocks available today. They even discuss some vintage bowling balls that are no longer produced. Thomas also throws each kind of ball to demonstrate the reactions each ball creates. Thomas is a USBC certified coach who has been bowling for over 15 years and has several verified 300 games.
Knowing more about the types of bowling balls is essential to make good decisions on the types of bowling balls you should have in your bag.

Great video! Really enjoyed the explanation of all different kinds of coverstocks and learned a bunch! As much as its not recommended from proshops as well as higher cost for beginners to start out with a reactive ball, I do believe its possible. Particularly for bowlers that have lower revs and/or bowl on heavier oil patterns, control should be managable and these balls are also quite versitile and strong when they hit the pocket.

I agree. If I'm a Pro shop operator and someone walks in wanting a reactive ball and they don't have a lot of RPMs, I'm selling them an aggressive asymmetric solid ball. Not the most aggressive one out there like a Gem or anything like that, but definitely something that is aggressive-ish. They'll actually see the ball hook and won't leap down a bowling ball rabbit hole like many do when they get a resin ball that "doesn't hook."

1:15 That might have covered a 7-10. I've heard the name Thomas Knapp before too. Was he on tour at one point?

Urethane balls were popular in the 70s and 80s I think. The Hy-Road Max is a two piece ball. It's coverstock and the weight block. The specs. are an RG of about 2.57 and a diff of 0.046. Mine hooks like gangbusters. The cover is the NEX which is quite strong compared to the original Hy-Road with it's R2S cover. I have a Black Beauty rubber bowling ball which is about 50 years old. It hardly makes any reaction on today's oily lanes. If the lanes are completely dry it will hook quite nicely though.

Thank you for your comments, we love the Hy-Road Max and we consider it one of the best options for a first ball. We didn't get into the specifics of this ball, or any other, because we are trying to keep this game simple. We do plan on filming more about the specifics of the weight options, flare potential, and differential numbers - items a pro shop professional should be able to explain to anyone wanting to purchase a ball.

is it his bowling style as I don't see a big difference when he uses a different ball on the lane, they all look like they hook left at the end near the pins?

He throws with a lot of power so it can be difficult to see the difference. The reaction of the balls was subtle between them. When you are trying to find a ball that works well on the lane, it is is matter of inches, or even centimeters can be thr difference between strikes and splits. We will shoot this video again to highlight the changes in reactions very soon.
