This was a really good article I had been taking to my place where I bowl solids or hybrid because if you tried to play pearl they would over react could never get lined up. The other day went to practice and was able to play my pearl ball 😁. I take both some just set in my bag but was surprised that I was able to grab my ball out that has just been sitting to long.

Greater hook not equaling greater backend...most misunderstood concept for bowler's in the market for a new ball. Differential #'s and ball purpose seem to get overlooked a lot too. Ex: HRP vs !Q Tour Emerald, both use R2S Pearl & are symmetrical but deliver two distinct reactions on the backend. Generally speaking, would solids be considered the most "all purpose" of the covers for the avg league bowler who usually carries one ball and a spare ball?

Your last comment struck accord for me. I want something to be a step down from my physix. I loved my code black, but it is long in the tooth. As I could get it to go long , with great backend, start right and progres left thru out the night and still keep it holding steady. Your Asto seems like it be the best fit... I was thinking newer and possibly thinking of going Parrallx to be more versatile or Rubicon, Nuc Cell seems like it might be to strong for what I'd want. Axiom Pearl may also fill what I am looking for. Which one would you recommend? Also loved the lineup video .. Great advice when practicing and lining up before league. Now if you can teach me how to adjust when leaving corners.. the force will be strong with me.. haha

Astro is a perfect step down from the PhysiX, same core, same general shape and motion on the lanes, but longer, stronger, and less hook overall.

Pretty new to bowling and trying to build my first bag. My home center seems to just pour soup out all over the lane as there doesn’t seem to be a dry area that I can throw out too and come back in from. No matter how many revs I put on it, if it goes any further right than the 6 pin, it’s not coming back. I can line up with the 6 pin and roll my trend nice and easy to hit the pocket, or throw my super soniq and hit a little high, possibly hitting the 1 right in the face. Any suggestions for a different ball/reaction to try?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
Probably going to want a stronger ball, the Super Son!Q is plenty strong and it's going to help, but if you get something like a UFO or Axiom, you won't have to play so straight and will get help with the ball hooking more so you don't have to work so hard at it.

Great video and explanation as always. One question, why is a hybrid cover so much more difficult to re-polish. After knocking the original compound finish off, several applications of polish finish are still leaving my hybrid looking dull.

Huh. I don't think there's anything special or different about that one, what pad did you use to knock the compound off? If you go too rough of an undergrit, it's gonna be really hard to shine anything back up, it's nothing that has to do with the cover being a hybrid.

thanks for clearing that up, the whole time i been bowling ive been thinking more hook is more backend and more aggressive, but its good that i watched this video and another one where comparing a strong ball to a weak ball, and it changed my whole thought process. so if more aggressive is the ammount of traction the ball gets on the lane then would the nuclear cell get the upper aggressiveness but because its a pearl its a quick response pearl thats what makes it stronger? cause i bowl on normal house shots and the ball has grip the lane a few times but then goes down but then turns quick. im just wondering, sorry im making my question complicated.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the Nuke has both a lot of traction AND quick response, where something like the Hyroad Pearl has a lot of response, but not a ton of grip.
@FSUSean2112
@FSUSean2112 4 жыл бұрын
@@LukeRosdahl oh nice yes it does, so not just dull and solid balls have traction and grip the lane, cause pearls can do that too as us talking about the nuclear cell

im trying to understand more on the different shapes that different balls can have and having surface on balls can provide different shapes too, it is complicated to understand. im trying to simplify it and figure out my arsenal that i have now, with my hustle rap, hyroad and my nuke. 2 pearls and a hybrid. but also i can put surface on the nuke and i can get it to read earlier. my question is how do you figure what shape the bowling ball has?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 жыл бұрын
I think the issue some people have is making it a little more complicated than it is. A lot of "bowling terms" are just regular words that people are using to describe what the ball is doing. The way you figure out what shape the ball has is to just watch what it does, and then watch what it does compared to other balls. It's MUCH more helpful to be throwing them yourself than to watch them on video, several times I've gone out and gotten video and written the reviews based on what I saw and felt while filming, only to start putting the video together and see marginal to no difference between the balls even though I've just written a 7 minute video about how it reacts and how it's different from the one I'm comparing it to . . it's really important to watch the ball throughout the entire lane and learn how to read when a ball starts revving up, seeing/feeling if it wants to hook earlier or go longer, or if it wants to drive through the pocket or kind of go straight through it. Is it really sharp on friction or really smooth? A lot of it is developing your own eye for ball reaction. My videos aren't gospel, mostly because stuff will look different in different centers on different conditions for different bowlers. It's just like going golfing and one golfer may take a 5 iron on the same shot someone else only needs a 7 iron for, but then because of the different club face angles, they also have to play different shot shapes too, so the same look from the same spot on the course might require two quite different strategies due to golfer game and ability. Sometimes you can get lost in the details instead of just keeping it simple like you said, yeah sure you can put any surface you want on any ball you want and that'll change the hook potential and adjust the shape. As long as you can match the shape/look up to the conditions and get the pins down, that's all that matters.

@@LukeRosdahl yes exactly I can experiment with different surfaces and everything I've never put service on any of my bowling balls before but I just decided to buy Aberlon pads for the first time and I put a 2000 on my new cell so I get to experiment what that will do. And I'm looking at the proton or the reality to be a stronger grippier ball down Lane. It's just I want to start getting the facts about me down like what is my PIN to positive access point, rev rate full speed and so forth but there are a lot of KZbin videos that help with that so and a lot of them say put tape on the ball. So I'm going to experiment that sometime soon. But also finding out what pin up and pin down does. But yeah sometimes I watch bowling balls and they go through the pins and not hit the head pin and go to the right, just seeing a light ball in a dark ball go into a roll it is kind of hard to see because of course the ball is darker to see. Watching a ball going to a roll I need to watch that and also just imagine where the breakpoint is and throw the ball to the breakpoint and it will hook back over. It's just interesting
@FSUSean2112
@FSUSean2112 3 жыл бұрын
@@LukeRosdahl I've just had a thought do you mean what shape the ball has as in how it reacts down Lane if it holds the line and reacts on say 10 board to the pocket that's some shape but say the breakpoint is eight or say six board and turns over that's more shape, is that a good thinking process of it if the reaction is better it has more shape and less movement the not good shape. But then what about the strong balls that grip the lane and just move a little bit yeah. Idk just trying to figure this out
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah there's a ton that goes into it, and it's really confusing and kind of overwhelming when you're learning. Find Storm's Pin Buffer Layout System trilogy of videos, it's REALLY helpful to break down stuff like RG and differential, plus pin up vs pin down, ball dynamics, etc. Just watch those over and over again until they make sense, and that'll help out a ton.

very good video. tomorrow is gonna be interesting because i will try something that probably makes no sense but i want to see the results anyway. i will go to my favorite center and throw my idol pearl with a 2000 grit cover. just want to see what it will do because my phaze 3 completely stops hooking with a dull cover. these lanes has a very forgiving ths and with my electrify pearl i was able to shoot an 213 average which is quite high for me even if its just a ths. so that ball is going with me too ofcourse. i havent tried the electrify with a dull surface and i dont think that would be a good idea. i like it polished by hand.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
It's not that the P3 stops hooking, it's probably burning up because it's too much ball for the condition especially with that kind of surface. At least with surface, it'll always shine back up and you can change it at anytime, so experimenting to find out what happens is a good thing
@7803bigart
@7803bigart 4 жыл бұрын
How do you feel about surface change on balls, like taking the shine off pearls or putting shine on a solid? I know some people that mever change it because they say that is not what the cover was intended for. Are there any facts to that?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
Nah, generally speaking it doesn't make a lot of sense to get a shiny pearl and then scuff it up, but at the same time, the factory gloss can make the ball too over/under, so sanding it down and letting the lane shine it back up usually ends up making it more effective. However again, sometimes letting a solid ball shine or sanding a pearl can offer unique or different reactions. A shiny solid ball will most of the time still be smoother and more controllable than pearls, but not as early and strong as it would be with the surface on it, which can be pretty effective and helpful sometimes. Some people also automatically remove the factory shine on polished stuff before they even throw it because they know it just doesn't work well for them. My opinion is to try all kinds of surfaces to see what you like because you can always polish it or sand it back to what it was, so no reason not to try.

This will be my 2nd year as a One Hander and currently in the process of unlocking all this new knowledge that I never knew or "thought" I knew... actually just got my PAP last month... I've got a ton of learning to do & this is gonna be a huge help for choosing the right ball for various sport shot conditions as I start to understand how cover types/formulas contribute to different ball reactions. Definitely a game changer 🤯🤘
