Robert has always been one of my favorite bowlers. He is definitely a class act.

Growing up here in Singapore, it was common to play against many spinners (helicopter) in competitions, and one definitely felt like they had an advantage in uneven/oily lane situations, but it's as legit a style as any, and has its drawbacks and weaknesses too. Robert Smith adjusted and played well, and I also respect his temperament and cool, but I agree that the conditions probably leaned in favour towards Cheng Chao Sheng. Wish I could still play the sport if not for my permanent injury forcing an early retirement.

you dont hook to avoid the oil. Its the opposite you want the ball to slide through the oil and store energy. At the the break point it gains traction in the dry and enters the rack with much more power.

This is my first time seeing Robert bowl from looking him up and wow, I like his style a lot both personality and style. So much respect and smooth form, and both were fun to watch!

Its not against the rules. So who cares howbhe throws the ball? As long as it gets results.

If you look closely, the Asian guy is throwing a backup ball ! The ball is turning in the wrong direction for a right-handed player !

Most of the UFO style bowlers that I’ve seen….for righties, they throw left to right. Cheng is the first one I’ve seen aim more towards the pocket as opposed to throwing what we would call a fade. What’s also interesting is that he puts his ring finger and thumb in the holes…but not the middle. That’s totally different.

Funny watching "Did they just call my name?" kind of expression on Robert's face.

You see a lot more older, softer lane beds in Asia and less of a wall. Dry middles make the spinner shot effective. Most spinner types throw 10-12lb equipment. Note this guy's ball taking out the 10 pin on more than 1 occasion.

Lanes in taiwan are slicker than in the US Open, from the line all the way to the rack there's oil, its why smith was having so much trouble no traction. All house lanes are like this, in the US house lanes usually only have oil in the center so people hook to avoid the oil. But I rather stroke and spare all day than to face a 7-10 that this ufo style is prone to seeing. At the champion level styles don't make a difference, oil patterns and the player will.

@John-ct6yk8 жыл бұрын
The spinner is a headpin hunter. Strikes or splits 50 percent ratio the ball never his the 5 pin. Smith is being nice but this guy isn't in his league..
@BlackAdam27848 жыл бұрын
What a strange style lol. But, man, does it force you to be deadly accurate. Still prefer Bob's style overall though, but still lol. On another note, got to love those gorgeous asian women !!
@lehmanpetty69747 жыл бұрын
34th RLight not really. his ball gets so much pin action that as long as it hits the head pin he'll probably get a strike.
@jnqckz8 жыл бұрын
The helicopter ball backs up because of the release position. The helicopterist uses so much spin that his hand winds up on the left side of the ball, so as the ball falls off the fingers it gets a clockwise roll on top of the counterclockwise spin. There's not much roll, so it's a small backup. If you use lots of revs like Smith, you can be victimized by unpredictable lane conditions. On the other hand, the helicopterist can be victimized by all sorts of unpredictable pinfalls; sometimes the shot works great, sometimes there will be lots of splits, 5-8's, 5-7's etc. Are there any vid's of a helicopterist versus a more flexible western-style bowler e.g. Norm Duke?
@robert09559060287 жыл бұрын
how to spin the ball like that? It's easy just turn your palm 180 degrees when you threw the ball at the last moment. you don't have to increase any power to do that, I am a helicopter player and I had seen tiny female score 300 with helicopter.
@daw1625 жыл бұрын
I'm confused as to why more US pros don't move to the outside a little bit on a heavy oil pattern like this one. Smith has a lot of good shots, but also a bunch that come in weak. I know you get a lot of ten pins coming from the outside, but if you pick them up and string strikes together, you still shoot a good score. No funny splits.
@slmrcs5 жыл бұрын
That seems to make sense, but it you bowling on a long oil sport shot, the ball won't make it back from outside. Or if it does, the oil is flat out outside, so your shot hast to be perfect. playing straight up outside is for shot oil conditions, and very high scoring pace.

I know this might sound stupid,but I thought that The Cure's Robert Smith was on that video!!!
@JD-lu8jb11 жыл бұрын
ok I was at a tournament and somebody was doing this on shark and he shot a 411 series, he didn't even make the 1st qualifying round, when you hit the head pin dead on over and over again you are going to leave nasty splits. I don't understand why people do this in the USA like cbizzlenizzle said they don't have weight limits in some countries here we have them and it ruins your wrist and thumb there is no benefit to it and the people who do good with it are lucky nothing more to it.
@Dtyler17111 жыл бұрын
16 would be sufficient anyway for a spinner. However, if he holds a ball that way even with a 15 I would be impressed.

for you guys to realize, helicopter styles cant bowl on medium-long oil patterns. In China (excluding HK) and Taiwan, most bowling centers barely oils up to 30 ft, and normally does not clean the backend. However, the tough part is (to overcome as a bowler that curves the ball), they directly lay down a 30 ft low volume flat pattern.
@theamflitebowler6 жыл бұрын
Interdicted my local alley uses a 40+ft oil pattern

They don't have weight limits on the ball in Japan. That's why he can carry out the 5 and not leave 5-7 or 4-6 splits every frame.
@MrDorbel6 жыл бұрын
of course there is a weight limit, 16lbs, same the world over, but actually most spinners bowl 11 or 12lb balls.

I agree with what stated in facts read comments there two that tell you this is not bowling. As well they do not use oil as their comment from their country says they do. Really how many of them do you see World Wide winning or part of PBA you won't! Pulse in the USA & Europe we do oil lanes flat & we don't allow the ball to be released behind the foul line! Make them bowl 3 games never see anyone from there roll a 500.
@MrDorbel6 жыл бұрын
Utter nonsense. The spinner style works well on all sorts of conditions. Lots of guys there average 210+ with it. Nothing in the rules to say you can't release it behind the foul line either, not that this guy does.
