glad to see someone else using hot glue. I turn 14 inch bowls held only by hot glue. Holds extremely well. just make sure any oily wood is cleaned.

They say 'from little things big things grow', well here we have to coin a new saying like-?- "from little things Beauty grows". I am sure there are clever people out there who would come up with much better slogans than mine. These are absolutely delightful little bowls Gord. My wife does not like it when I want to keep something "just in case"!! The 'Indian blanket design' fits these little bowls perfectly. Keep them coming mate, Don from South Aust.

Gord, beautiful! I saw a posting on one of Mike Waldt's videos about using alcohol to separate the hot glue joint. See if he has tried it. Mike's video on the "emerging bowl" was the first time I had seen hot glue used. Then the very next video I watched (yours) used the same technique. Guess what I am going to try!

Robert Harrington Hi Robert. I don't know about a special glue. I just use whatever I have on hand and have no idea where I got it or the brand name; it's been around here for a very long time. I haven't had a lot of trouble with it although I occasionally find peeling the pieces of glue off the wood can be a bit trying. This was the first time I tried just pushing the piece off and it was tough to do. Prying the piece off is much easier. Sorry I can't give you a better answer, Robert. Thanks for watching!! .....Gord

Gord -- Very nice little bowls. I also preferred the one you didn't show the making of. (I'm sure I could come up with a more stilted sentence structure if I really tried.) These bowls would make excellent single serving nut bowls! I'm sure every hostess would love to have a set. Two comments: Olive oil (and most other vegetable oils) can go rancid (DAMHIK). Mineral oil won't go rancid; it won't cure, either. Hardening oils, like tung, linseed, and walnut don't go rancid and cure to a relatively hard and durable finish. Of these, I prefer walnut oil. Second: This would have been a perfect opportunity to use a vacuum chuck. Your method worked well and was cheaper, but you shouldn't let such details get in the way of a new tool!
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 9 жыл бұрын
David Walser Hi David, I must admit, I also prefer the bowl that I did not show the making of. I didn't think it necessary to show both of them being turned as I used the same techniques for both, just changed the shape. I've had good luck - so far - with olive oil and I like the way it darkens the wood a bit and seems to make the colors pop. When I finally, one day, have a problem with the oil going rancid I won't be able to say I was never warned! Actually, I have a vacuum chuck but as very few turners have them I try to show other methods and I like using hot glue. Also, as you said, it's cheaper!!! Thanks for watching & commenting, David. .....Gord

I have subscribed to several wood-turner's channels... I watch you guys spending an inordinate amount of time cutting and gluing segments with an incredible amount of precision. Yet, when it comes time to set your work up on the lathe, you use the "guess n' by-golly-that's good enough" alignment process.... I mean, it's like you've never heard of a dial indicator, or something. I mean, it's not like dial indicators will break the bank... Starting at $15 @ Harbor Freight, they're well within the means of someone who will pay $60 for ONE turning tool. Please don't take this as a condemnation of your skill... That's not my intent. I'm just trying to pass along some of my knowledge as a Journeyman Machinist, if it's at all helpful. Frank
@GordonRock1
@GordonRock1 9 жыл бұрын
franksalterego Thanks for the feedback, Frank. When making something like the small bowls in this video being out by a very small margin is not going to be noticeable so I don't worry about it. When making one of my more intricate segmented vessels I spend a lot more time lining things up to get them as close to perfect as I can. I understand your point, especially coming from a machinist, but being out 1 degree or less on the kind of work I do is not going to result in any kind of tragedy like it could in your work. Thanks for watching, .....Gord
