I think Doctor Strange can do $80 mill opening weekend cause many people will likely see it in IMax and 3d. this is one of the few movies that is worth it.

It's very possible, some of the movies we have had this year have surprised me on the box office. I would have given it more like Ant-man numbers(66-70 mil) because of the lack of info the audience has on the character, but I wouldn't be surprised on your number. If it does, I think you are right on the IMAX and 3d, that may put it in that ballpark, I know I will be seeing it in IMAX.

To all those people who say that Disney is 'cheating' with it's limited release strategy, does that mean that almost every oscar-bait picture is doing the same thing? Are they all cheaters? Must be, must be. Basically it comes down to this: Disney/Marvel are veterans and know how to play the game in their favour. They know what their audience wants and they make enough changes to keep it interesting and fresh without going totally bonkers the off the rails. That's a merit and not something to shrug off. Essentailly the marvel movies are like the Disney Princess cartoons: there are similar tropes but the window dressing (in terms of visuals) and characters are just different enough to pass as unique. That way you are building a cohesive universe with brand recognition while also getting the benefit of claiming that every movie is at least a little different from the rest. Disney/Marvel knows exactly what its audience wants and therefore knows that whatever they do now, they'll still get a BO out of it. Warner Bros/DC are not as good at this game: they still don't know what their properties ought to be because the DCEU has only had 3 major releases and all three have met with mixed reviews. An Iron Man solo movie was able to bring in more than a movie starring both Batman and Superman and that is rather telling. Marvel gets the credit it gets now because it built up its universe piece by piece instead of hurtling us into the middle of it like DC. Marvel has a vision, DC has a basic idea of what it wants to be but not much else. It's why DC movies are sailing in comparison.

***** Oh fascinating, do you consider BvS to be MOS2? It felt more like a Batman movie with Superman sprinkled here and there. Batman certainly got the more interesting story line and the general love from the fans, but I digress). Yes Iron Man had to work its way to get there mainly because most of the general audience didn't know who he was. People knew about Superman and Batman because there were tons of movies about them and people generally liked those. There was more awareness regarding the character which makes people more interested in the project. It's why Marvel had to fight uphill battles with unknown heroes like Ant-Man, GOG and even Doctor Strange. You may think my reasoning is dodgy but people knew who Superman was, which helped MOS get to that amount at the BO. Think about it: would Jurassic World or Force Awakens have made that much money if it didn't have anything to do with Jurassic Park or Star Wars? True, both were very good movies on their own but the fact that they were of the same universe as the previous movies helped them a lot in the BO. And really, even if you aren't agreeing with me, there's still The Dark Knight Trilogy to consider. BB: $374.2 million Literally the next movie DK : $1.005 billion So really MOS2 as you call it couldn't even live up to the the same studio's previous outing with a CBM. Forget Marvel, DC couldn't even beat previous DC records. And that one only had Batman in it - there wasn't even a Superman or a Wonder Woman. BvS had all 3 of them and *still* failed to reach a billion. Those 3 are the most famous heroes in the Justice League and they are the ones that almost all of the general public know or have heard of. That fact that a movie with all three couldn't break the billion dollar threshold when a film with only Iron Man and a film with only Batman managed to is pretty disappointing. And lets be realistic, do you think the DC executives expected BvS to be lower than a billion? I mean it only managed to beat GOTG by $98.7 million.

Phil K You must have missed what I was replying to. I was telling that other guy he should understand how the website RT works with its scoring. It has nothing to do with BvS (which I agree is shit). I agree with the original comment, this only works if the movie is at least decent. WB did this tactic of early reviews with Nolan films because they had confidence. With BvS WB didn't and lifted the embargo as late as possible.

+The Avatar So your genius now???
@Hypnotico89
@Hypnotico89 7 жыл бұрын
The Avatar it's broken because the percentage score does not reflect how critics really feel about a movie. For example a movie that gets all reviews as slightly favorable where they are certified fresh will get 100% on RT. Doesn't mean it's an A movie. They could have all agreed it was a C+ movie, but it gets 100% because of how the system calculates the score. But a polarizing movie where half the critics gave really favorable reviews and the other half really non favorable reviews could get a 50% on RT even though many of the reviewers thought it deserves an A. Especially when you have these limited access garbage where "select critics" have access to a movie and they all write favorable reviews that can influence the judgments of reviewers watching the film later. They should not release the score until all the reviewers have seen it and then give a final score and after a certain date even so that even if more critics review it, the score cannot be affected. This may or may not be feasible but regardless the current system is broken and can be manipulated by shady corporations like Disney
@ihateu890
@ihateu890 7 жыл бұрын
Disney is not the first studio to do this, WB has done this before too. Doesn't anyone remember the reviews for The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises? Only a certain amount of critics saw it in advance and only then did they release the embargo and let everyone else review it. Studios have been doing this for years, you idiots are only complaining about it now because everyone is so butthurt over the scores for BvS and Suicide Squad.

RT is a fucking joke. The new Ghostbusters and Sharnado has a higher rating than freaking Interstellar!! The Accountant is one of the better films released this year and it has a score of 50%!! Critics these days only care if the movie is light hearted, fun and humorous but whenever a movie requires the audience to think, the critics totally shut down the movie and term it as "bland and boring"!

antonzap Interstellar was nothing like 2001. Also mind you that 2001 was also termed "pretentious" and was panned by the critics when it first came out! Only as time went by and people started to understand Stanley Kubrick's vision did it start getting the recognition it deserved! Also Interstellar has a higher rating that 2001 on IMDB with twice the number of votes as 2001 so more people loved Interstellar than they did 2001!

Dexter Morgan interstellar was a LOT like 2001; I was more or less ticking off the nods as the film went along. That doesn't make interstellar a bad film because it explored very similar themes - I actually enjoyed it for that reason - but I don't think there's any merit denying that the parallels are there

Trump supporters?????? Said a mcu dipshit So it sounds like Doctor Strange uses visuals to tell its story. Can't wait for the 25% on RT OH WAIT, this isn't Snyder? 100% it is then. 😂😂😂 I’m sure I’ll enjoy Doctor Strange but picking apart these reviews are a form of entertainment in of itself. The bar has been set so low for Marvel films Doctor Strange Formulaic plus some cool visuals = 🍅 100%. The problem is that when it comes to Marvel Movies. People just look for the positives. But when it comes to DC Films. People look for more of negativity. You'll have big KZbinr's like Chris Stuckman pointing out how great Marvel Movies are. But they just overlook the negatives. Civil War had a shit ton of plot holes and the film had soo many problems but everyone looked at the Bright side. However with Dawn of Justice. Everyone looked at the Dark side of how disappointing the film was, overlooking the fact that it had great things in it. And it kicked the doors for the entire DC Universe. Something which took Marvel 5 years to do. But...Marvel anyways! It's like they aren't ready to critize a Marvel Movie brutally. They think that Marvel Movies are made by Immortals who can't just do any major mistake. While they're always ready to point out DC's mistakes. Still waiting for the break even articles on Doctor strange, isnt odd that there isnt a single one from any major outlet? with BVS and Suicide squad everyone was an accountant, scrutinising opening numbers yet with dr strange no mention anywhere. Its crazy.

The movie's coming out this Wednesday (Oct. 26) here in the Philippines, and I gotta say fans and most movie goers are really hyped about it especially now that it's been featured in the news a week before.

Yup. Disney has figured out that the system and is manipulating it to a tee. As long as they don't get creative or think out of the box, in other words make these films mediocre and they'll always score high. Playing it safe and not taking chances. They're like counting cards at the blackjack tables. Genius

Question. Box Office Mono lists the budget for Deepwater Horizon as $110m but the movie cost over $150m before rebates. Do you consider that misleading? Austin Powers 2 cost $30m and covered 100% of it's budget in products tie ins, it would be misleading to list the budget as $0. Any thoughts?

I really dont get the RT scores. Dr. Strange was entertaining and visually unique with a couple of laughs, but the overall score is BEYOND ridiculous. I never once let critics dictate whats good or bad to watch, but the fact that a LOT of people are dependent on these reviews makes me feel like there's a great deal of shady false or exaggerated advertising going on. What's worse is Grace keeps bringing it up as if it's the word of GOD. I actually snoozed for a couple of scenes but that's due to some "strange" dialogue most people probably wont get or care or understand. The visuals are a pretty sight, and it's very much "Inception" on steroids, but the ooh's and aaahh's didnt last long. The last 20 minutes of the movie reminded me of the last 20 minutes of the Fantastic Four(Chris Evans version). Even the setting was similar if you compare the two side by side up to the main galactic bad guy. Another thing is I didn't care for any of the characters, even in death, which is ok since it's really not Marvel's strong suit. Which brings me back to HOW and WHY it got such high ratings. Almost like someone is helping it along the box office, which shouldn't be necessary cause it's a Marvel movie. Thumbs down for rotten tomatoes even existing, but Thumbs up to Doctor Strange for not looking like the typical Avenger movie. P.S. That end credit scene was CHEAP and uninspired.

Trevon The Arrow I think you're confusing the words good, mediocre and average. I don't think any marvel movie has been not good. Every film they've done has been extremely competent, well shot and have a coherent plot characters and performances. I could understand you saying none of them have been excellent so far that's a fair argument but to say that any of them are mediocre is a bit of a stretch.

I never "use" RT critics score, the audience score is much more helpful and reflecting a more honest opinion. The sheer number of them gives a better "result"! Question Grace: Why do you prefer RT over IMDB? Or... could you "explain" the difference between them all and the relevance for the industry and the audience? And thank you for the great content every day!!! :)

But how can the studios control that the intitial Rotten Tomato numbers are good? Can they cherry pick the reviewers based on what they have said about Marvel films before? I know scores always drop a little the more reviews there is but it should not drop drastically.

What? Disney takes many risks, many companies do. Disney and Pixar are always pushing the boundaries animation wise. Also Marvel had: Iron Man (huge risk), Thor, Captain America, Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and now yes Dr. Strange. For Iron man and Avengers, if it had done poorly, that would have been terrible for Disney (well actually Disney hadn't bought Marvel in Iron Man times). The movies I mentioned were risks because they were all unknown characters at the time. DC on the other hand is still doing their Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Joker movies after several decades of those characters. They stick to the icons because they know it will get cash. Are MCU movies following a similar plot? Yes, most movies do, it's called tropes. However where they lack in unique plot and villains, they make up in visual effects, fresh characters, and fluid tone.

Hey Grace, what's your take on Scott Mendelson from Forbes giving a 5.5 of 10. do you feel this was a strategic score to click bait his review. If he gave a score of 6, he would have had a ripe Tomato, but a 5.5 is a rotten one. Not only he's scoring out of 10, he's narrowed it down to decimals. After reading his review, it sounds more like a C- than a D... would appreciate your thoughts
