My first ever fretless banjo. It’s going to tough to learn it but I know my skills, ohhh it’s going to be a great journey. Check out this great banjo from Gold tone AC-FL1.

I've been wanting to pick up a banjo myself, if Lion started putting out lessons I'd just have to take the venture

Very nice. You make it sound great. I have the AC-1, and I love it. I would love to have a fretless one too.

That is so interesting, you can really hear the difference, especially in the slides.

One of the neatest things about fretless instruments, is that they have the capacity to free one from the strict 12 note western chromatic scale. Opening up mountains of so called "microtonal" options, as to the exact pitch of the notes used. Which, can give an entirely different feel to an otherwise typical or standard scale of notes. The Arabic maqam system of notes is one which could be experimented with on a fretless banjo, they have dozens upon dozens of systems which use the "in between notes" on fretless instruments. I hope you have loads of fun with it!!!
@Mallchad Жыл бұрын
This is cool but it isn't as interesting as you think because lute-like instruments are already free of the chromatic system due to bend whammys and mutes. gives you basically every note you could ever ask for
@TheRamsberg Жыл бұрын
I certainly see your point and perspective there, and that does make sense. I see a tremendous difference in being able to seamlessly slide a note, or select notes both up and down, where as with whammys it's mainly down, and bends, it's up. They can end up in the same place, but approach from totally different directions, with a variance in difficulty for aspects of them each. Forming a full "all strings" chord with a fretless instrument is very difficult, shifting notes up and down, rather easy! With a fretted instrument, those eases and difficulties are reversed. It's all about priorities of the player and that's player's style and embedded experience/willingness to engage with a different, and new(or ancient) system. @@Mallchad

Man, the nylon sounds so good. Something about the nylon has always felt better to me on guitars too. Think I'm going to have to get me one of these. Thanks for showing it off.

Wow! My first fretless is the same Gold Tone. My main banjo is a Gold Tone CC-OT Old Time banjo, so given the price of the GT fretless I couldn't resist it. Still play the fretted one more but I enjoy the fretless as it's a bit more relaxing. You sound awesome and it suits your style perfectly, I think!

With how well you play (what I consider, or guess is) traditional southern US blues / bluegrass, I wasn't expecting such a thick accent from over the pond lol. That first muted strum I was thinking, 'wow that thing sounds amazing!' Diggin the hoodie with a cowboy hat thing too. You could make that a sort of trademark style. 👍 (I forget, thumbs up means something different over there doesn't it? lol)

Sounds great, didn't know there was a fretless banjo. I used to play what I called dishtowel banjo, then found out I wasn't the only one--resonator off, dishtowel in! When you live in an apartment, you must make concessions! Besides, I preferred the sound. Looks like you're doing the same thing, or is that a wash cloth?😅

Nice review, so what do you honestly think about the plastic body and neck, does it seem cheap and "plasticky"? I'm interested in the long neck version.
