This was one of Gennady's toughest fights that you don't often hear about. He was tested by Kassim Ouma and emerged victorious after a grueling battle; both boxers were relentless but Golovkin had an engine. He pushed forward and although he took many punches to the head, his power was more noticeable and effective, often returning fire -- he did a number on his opponent with the right hand, consistently tagging Kassim to the head; and as well with a variety of punches aimed for the body. Ouma was in trouble, especially when caught against the ropes where Gennady would do the most damage, and rip to his sides with vicious left and right hooks, as well as uppercuts. By the tenth round, Kassim was thoroughly weakened and Gennady finished the fight with devastating right hooks and uppercuts; this was an exciting fight between two highly competitive combatants, often unspoken by fans.

GGG along with PAC is my fav fighter at the moment but I'm starting to believe that Canelo does have a chance. His slow feet won't hamper him vs golovkin like they would against a mover (mayweather/Lara for example). I still pick golovkin to win, BUT it isn't the complete mismatch that I thought it was 12-18 months ago.

LAtrax that's what I say too, he's like a fucking ROBOT, an he can dodge punches most times. The thing I like about him is that he WANTS/LOVES to fight, and that's why he always the aggressive one. @@architchaudhary1285 GGG was getting hit so much he began to panic a bit. He began banging Ouma with his head, and it wasn't accidental. A shocking fact, that GGG needed to be dirty because he couldn't handle Ouma for several rounds. GGG used his head 2 or 3 times in one round ( I've forgotten which ), the fight only began to change after that. I like GGG but I won't lie to protect anyone. I never saw GGG fight dirty against any other opponent, but he definitely intentionally used his head out of frustration, and I feel bad for Ouma as a result.

This fight was right after he had the sparring session with a 21 year old Canelo. They say GGG hurt Canelo a couple times once to the head and body. They both improved alot since then but I give the edge to GGG. I think Canelo would land more but GGGs power and size would b the difference.

Just for the heck of it I started counting punches landed by Ouma in the 4th round. I began after almost half the round was over and in the remaining 90 seconds or so he landed 38 punches. I was counting conservatively, the actual number could have been a few higher. Now I feel compelled to go back and count again but the whole round this time. It's possible that he landed 50 or more in that round, an amazing feat if he did. I'd watched this fight once before and I was really impressed with Ouma. At this point in his career, GGG was winning his fights pretty easily and we know what he did as his career progressed. Even now after so many more fights this kid Ouma still gave GGG one of his toughest battles. GGG was missing a ton of punches beginning in the 4th round and that continued for the next several rounds. Ouma had GGG frustrated and turning up the heat but Ouma kept landing shots. I have to tell it straight and I believe that GGG got a little dirty during this fight. He must have felt some level of desperation because the rounds were going by, he kept increasing the pressure but Ouma handled it and kept bouncing shots off of GGG's forehead. As the intensity increased and GGG became a little annoyed Ouma hung in there and seemed to be eating it up. In the last couple rounds it got a little ugly as GGG wouldn't be denied but I have to reiterate that Ouma had him in some trouble as far as the scores were concerned. The official scores at the time of the stoppage were GGG by 1 point on 2 cards and by 2 or 3 points on the other. That means that before GGG won the last couple rounds he was losing on the cards, and that's pretty surprising given who he was and that he was relatively young here. I really wonder if the outcome would have been different if GGG hadn't fouled a few times. Normally you wouldn't think that much about it but head butts are more serious then anything other and it was being used to keep Ouma trapped and he took a lot of punches when trapped against the ropes. I can't say that it even made a difference for sure but I remember thinking it did after watching it the first time. It began in the 4th when GGG had Ouma against the ropes and really went after him. Ouma was doing very good until mid 4th round and I think GGG knew he had to straighten things out so he used his head once or twice to keep Ouma trapped against the ropes. In that scenario he was landing a lot of shots and Ouma couldn't get off the ropes due to GGG using every trick he could to keep him there. It was a great fight overall but Ouma was hurt bad before it was over. I checked his record and he quit fighting for 2 1/2 years after this fight. He came back after that but has been losing most of his fights and at 41 he's still fighting. I haven't heard him speak but I really fear that he suffered long term damage in the last couple of rounds. Taking off more then 2 years means he was beaten severely unless he was ready to retire anyway, but since he decided to return I would wager that he needed that much time off to heal and to recover. I hate to see that especially when it's a financial thing that forces him to continue fighting. At 40 to 41 why would a guy continue if he keeps losing fights unless he needs the money?

Actually I think, in some ways, he was tougher then. Its just that Oum was a great boxer himself and gave him a better fight then most other guys he faced, thus GGG didn't look as good. I think it was around 2012 so GGG would have been around 30, close to "prime" age in the career of a boxer.

I counted 68 punches landed for Ouma in the 6th round, previously I counted 62 for Ouma in the 4th round. I'm going to check if there are full fight punches landed totals somewhere, in just those 2 rounds I counted 130 landed punches by Ouma. GGG landed a lot as well and his were harder shots, but I think Ouma landed more by nearly a 2 to 1 margin. Incredible by both guys.

Wow! I counted the entire 4th round and I came up with 62 punches landed by Ouma. Many were not so hard punches to the body but more then half were decent short punches to the head. I'm tempted to count them again because 62 is a huge number. GGG landed some himself and his were harder for sure but he lost that round IMO.

Gennady had a Visa problem and his team didn't get there (Panama) until like two days before the fight. He didn't even have time to shave :) Jet lag can make any good athlete perform sub par. One of Abel Sanchez's interview talked about this. With no time to properly prepare, Gennady couldn't even feel his arms before the fight due to being so tired, why you see he isn't as sharp. Not only that, this was still the earlier fights after he just joined Abel's gym. Not bad for someone in this situation and was able to muster out a win. It's those quick uppercuts and body shots that really worn down Ouma (dude can that shots too).

One of the reasons Ouma lasted so long was because he wasn't on the ropes early in the fight. He stayed in the middle of the ring. He also has a solid chin, and isn't mentally weak like most guys who fight GGG. I'm sure he was felling the shots, but he didn't mentally fold at the 1st sign of pain. GGG also feels shots he takes, but he isn't mentally weak either and sticks to his game plan. This is probably the highest caliber opponent he's faced to date. Ouma would've beaten most of GGG's current opponents in his prime. He didn't have great power, but was always a solid guy and showed it in this fight. Plus he was a southpaw.

Triple G used his head in this fight, bumping Ouma around a bit by leading with his head. After the fight was over, at 41:48 GGG landed another head butt when they greeted each other. I counted Ouma's punches landed from the 4th round until the end. I knew he put up a good fight and was landing a lot of punches, albeit they weren't heavy shots. In the 6 1/2 rounds from the 4th until the end, Ouma landed an astonishing 309 punches. I didn't count GGG's landed punches but his were much heavier and I would guess that he landed 200 to 250 in those same 6.5 rounds.

+Fahmi Natour This was 5 years ago, you can see he's a much better fighter now. Canelo has not got much power, his KO rate is not great even though 35 of his 48 opponents weighed 149 or less. An iron-chinned 160 lb fighter like Golovkin won't be bothered by Canelo's punches. That's why Canelo is trying to get him to go to 155 so that he'll be weak at the weight,GGG hasn't weighed less than 158 in 10 years as a pro.

As a GGG fan, I have to admit that was a tough fight. However, it shouldn't be used as material to discuss any problems he might have in the future. Although his style in this fight is not as polished as it is now, he also looked very sloppy and at times tired. Ouma was also very game and not afraid to mix it up while proving a tough target to pin down. I had GGG barely winning the fight before the stoppage. Many people would probably say Ouma dominated this fight, but that's just being ignorant. For every flurry he nailed GGG with, GGG returned fire with flush hooks, uppercuts and right hands that actually appeared more damaging than Ouma's offense. Ouma took some damage. It wasn't a one-sided schooling until the stoppage. GGG is much more methodical and precise now. Had the current version of him fought that version of Ouma, I imagine Ouma would still land some good shots and surprise people, but GGG would have been a lot more accurate with his punching and would have hurt Ouma much earlier. One interesting note from this fight though, and this is something fundamental. In general, to beat GGG, you have to back him up or stand in front of him and punch with him while making him miss. While he's a very skilled puncher, he doesn't possess blistering hand speed. You can win exchanges with him if you're smart. The current version of GGG is also not all that easy to hit cleanly if you let him execute his gameplan. He uses a mix of throwaway punches, slipping, angles and rolls/deflections to reduce return fire while stalking opponents. If you let him come to you, you're not going to be very successful. He's just going to set you up, and it will only be a matter of time. However, I've noticed a sort of weakness in his upper body movement. He's easier to hit and frustrate when you take the fight to him and don't give him the angles he wants. Other words, he doesn't seem as good a reactive fighter as he is a proactive fighter.

Golovkin vs Jacobs: I got Golovkin within 8 rounds, but I'm being generous to Jacobs. I really think he'll stop Jacobs within 4. Jacobs got a few defensive flaws that are just perfect for GGG. He's a hard and explosive puncher, I'll give him that, but he's not really that skilled of an overall boxer. However, I don't rule out an upset because GGG could get careless. GGG vs Canelo. I want to say GGG stops him late, like round 10-12, but I don't know. Canelo is a tough guy and a crafty fighter. Given his reputation and everything, he doesn't seem like the type of the fighter that will cower down early against anyone. Stylistically, though, I give GGG the upper hand. Lot of folks are saying Canelo would give GGG a hell of a fight and some even think he would beat him easy, but they don't know what they're talking about. There are a few key holes in his style that will help GGG a lot. One of them is the footwork. GGG won't fight Canelo like everyone thinks he will.

yranaivo1 I think Golovkin beats Canelo pretty easy. Canelo just doesn't have the gas tank or the power (yes) to keep Golovkin off of him... I see Jacobs as the more dangerous fight because DJ has that one punch ko power, tho I don't think it will be enough to finish ggg off. However the way he jumps on his foe after he has him hurt is impressive. Reminds me of the great Trinidad in that regard... When you said Jacobs has the defensive holes/flaws... can you elaborate?

Yeah, Jacobs is a more dangerous fight because of the power factor. Although I think Brook was tougher from a stylistic standpoint, Jacobs has the ability to change the fight if GGG gets careless. As far as flaws, the first one is Jacbos' footwork. He doesn't possess the movement to maneuver GGG. He'll get cornered easily. That's already one bad drawback. His head and upper body movement is also not that crafty, so he'll offer up a decent target for GGG. Then the one thing that I personally think will lead to the KO itself is Jacobs' guard. Jacobs has a horrible habit of dropping his gloves when moving, but worst when punching. It occurred against Mora. It also occurred against Quillin, but that fight was so short it's hard to really say how much of a problem that became. Those three weaknesses were also put on the table against Pirog. That's a really bad weakness to have against GGG because GGG is in reality a counter puncher. He's not a simple come forward, aggressive puncher like everyone says. He's a stalking counter puncher, which is why you always see him steadily stalking his opponents and not just rush forward. He's either looking for openings and mistakes or is trying to create them. Watch all of his fights and you'll notice that he almost always hits the opponent while they get lazy with their guard or while they're punching or about to throw a punch. He also uses feints and throaway punches (like Ward and Lomachenko) to force the opponent to react or counter and open themselves, which he then exploits. Even when his opponents try to move away, he'll use his footwork to stay in front of them and then throws a hook to the body to freeze them. GGG's biggest skill is that he capitalizes on little mistakes.

In the 4th,5th and 6th rounds combined I got 192 punches landed for Ouma, I wonder if that's some kind of a record? I just counted 62 punches landed for Ouma in the 5th round, 62 in the 4th and 68 in the 6th round.

Golovkin's defense sure has improved since this fight. He was eating a lot of leather. I guess he got the memo that your face is not part of your defensive toolkit. He also hits harder now, bc this dude did not seem to respect his power the way you see in GGG's fights today.

Kassim Ouma was too tough for his own good. He was Golovkin`s toughest opponent and Golovkin looked like he was in a war at the end of this bout. They should have stopped this fight in the prior round `cause Ouma was not going to quit till he was unconscious.

we all know ggg throws rocks not punches. He is a truly hard hitter, no question about that. But speaking of Canelo, did he add new trainer, while still keeping that old man? It was apparent during his fight against Cotto. Also do you think Cotto is past his prime?? If Canelo is to fight Golovkin, he sure does need a better plan. I thought he was ill prepared against Mayweather, or maybe not ready. your comments are welcome on my musing.
