Box Turtles get new wading pool with filtration

My Ornate Box Turtles got a new wading pool with filtration. I wanted them to have clean water to drink & wade in. I used a RrptoFilter to do the job.

Thank you for showing your boxies cool set up. They look awesome so healthy .The only suggestion I would have is to move the rock mat from the water due to chemical glue on back of rocks but maybe you can fold it so ramp doesn't touch their water. Dude. Best idea ever, with the reptofilter. I used to work in pet retail and I had completely forgotten all about how they could work in so little water, because I never had any pets that needed such a thing until now. The solution to my water change problems! Do they knock it over?

A local Acrylic shop close to my house. I would Google "buy Acrylic glass". i bet you could fine a place that could deliver to your house. Also Home Depot carries pre cut pieces as well that might fit your project.

Hello! I have a gulf coast turtle that doesn't want to eat it is a male and the reason is because I had to start giving him other things other than butternut squash cause he was getting sick from on,y eating thAt. So his vet recommended meal worms but he started eating only that. Now we are struggling badly to get him to eat but I think this mixture will do him good. Your turtles are so beautiful and so is their home. I am so impressed and happy that people like you care for their animals the way they do. I am looking for the types of dry worms you get as well as the fish oil you put in their food. :)

I know I'm so late on this. But I will be watching more of your videos for education. I have 2 3 toed boxies and I recently built them a paludarium to have a better water feature for them. But I had to get one with 2 filters and crawdads to keep the water clear! My turtles are myrtle and George(recently found out george is a female)

I love this! Can I do this set up for the winter months (North Florida/Alabama line)? It gets in the teens here so I'm worried (first box tortoise). Also can we mix this food from the beginning for our new tortoise Charlie? It's day 2 and he's not eating the cut up strawberries and grapes. He was wild not from a store. Dog food is formulated for dogs & wouldn't give your Turtles all the Calcium & nutrients they need. I would stick with Crickets, worms, Frozen Pinky Mice & dry Box Turtle pellets, all can be bought at your local pet store or on line. Feeding them dog/cat food could prevent shell growth & cause problems with there intestinal track as well. Thanks for asking-!! Take care

Could you use a normal whisper filter for a fish tank for their water? Do they really need water consitioner AND the fish oil? I get a box turtle on monday and built him a 6 foot by 2 foot wooden enclosure with a second story near the end thats about 2 by 5. Theres three hideouts. And im buying octavius some canned crickets, veggies, fruits, and maybe some caterpillars but they gros me out lol i also have a 75 watt heat lamp. One for day and one for night but just gona use the one for night for

Hey first off I want to say GREAT VIDEOS they are so cool but I have a question. This might sound dum but I was looking on the Internet and found that I could feed my ornates the dry dog food but let it soak so it iOS easy for they to eat, is it okay for them cause we have a dog and his food is high in protein which they need but I just wanted to ask someone who knew what they were doing with these turtles then just go for it?

Nice that you want to keep clean water available at all times. Do you know if the material for the ramp (the backing and glue the rock tiles sit on) is safe or toxic if it sits in the water 24/7?

How do you hibernate them? Mine would only brumate. Do you have a thermal gradient in the tank? Do you ever feed them live food? Thanx for the vid. Great job!

HI, Mine started hibernating on there own at age 2 or so. They just start slowing down when it get colder. It helps if you have a large home they can go into to be in complete darkness. As far as live food, they love crickets & any kind of worms. Any thing they haft to chase after. This is a old video, I'v built them a much bigger home & better swimming/drinking tank sinse this video. There allot of fun.

Them slowing down is just brumating tho. Don't you have to have them in the cold, like in a big tub if dirt outside or something?

Hi, I'll I do with mine is turn off there heat source when I see them slowing down. Usually with in the next month of doing this they stop coming out of there house. I peek in on them & they've buried them self in the bedding & that's were they stay till it starts warming up. I never move them out of there house/pen. There kept in a spare bed room that strays around 65 degrees. Then around March, pretty soon out they come. I live in California so around this time of year it starts getting warm, so my spare bedroom starts getting warmer. They've done this the last 4 years like clock work. They don't haft to be in really cold environment to hibernate. It helps too to not handle them after you notice them slowing down. Most Box turtles will start this around 3 years old. The most impotant thing is giving them a nice house were they can fill safe & get into drakness.

I didn't know that. I had a lot of problems with my ornate. I ended up giving her to someone who was an expert in keeping reptiles because she had botfly maggots and I couldn't get rid if them. Ornates are beautiful but if I ever get a turtle again I'll prolly get a Midwestern/3 toed. There a lot easier to take care of. Thanx!

Tortoise's can get that old, but Turtles like mine Ornate Box Turtles get about 20 to 30 years old. Some people that have really old ones can give them to a zoo or a good home.

You shouldn't change up their environment if you can help it because they are strongly oriented to sense of home and changing up their environment can get them stressed although it may be enjoyable to do so by the human owner. Also, nice video but please keep what I said in mind :)

Bay Area should be good. Just make sere you have a heat lamp & UVB lamp. I live in Sacramento area. The plywood on my pen is just regular Plywood from Home Depot. I'v built a bigger one since this vid. Take care.

I have five Box Turtles. And two sliders. My five Box turtles all have their back stories. Some we received from vets where people threw them at trees. Some we just noticed werent getting the right nutrition in their environments. We even have a small turtle with a birth defect that makes him only have one eye. We have made 3 shelters for them. All are big enough for two turtles to hibernate in. I just have one question. Is it natural for turtles to bite when they mate?
