Boxcar Couloir // Skiing Another Colorado 14er

Colorado provides a buffet of mountain delights. The Centennial State is home to an abundance of ski lines and 14,000ft peaks and it can be hard to single out any one ski line. So I just typed “best backcountry ski lines in Colorado” in my browser and Boxcar came up on a list. I looked at less than 10 pictures, checked the weather and headed to Colorado. Little did I know that Mount Wilson, named after a topographer who was part of the first ascent, is according to some, one of the more challenging 14ers in Colorado. It’s situated in the Lizard Peak Wilderness just south of Telluride and only six hours from my house. I started at the Cross Mountain trailhead and 5,000ft and 6 miles of elevation and travel later, found myself on the beautiful, windless summit of Wilson. Everything was better than I expected except for the snow conditions which were pretty much what I expected. It’s nice having Colorado as a neighbor who occasionally lets me borrow their mountains.

Wanted to leave a note that you guys inspired me to get fit. After watching you casually climbing or running up mountains I thought hey I should do that. As of right now I have lost 60 pounds since the beginning of the year. Just wanted to say thank you for being inspirational.

13 miles, 5000 vert. steep snow, sketchy scramble in ski boots, ski descent of steep rock-lined couloir with a nasty dogleg in it, and Danny makes it looks like an ez stroll. Watching the video I'm thinking, "this is pretty casual compared to a lot of stuff the Armatures do, I could do that", then I start to do the math in my head,... um actually no.

Nice teaser at the end. I really hope the Armatures are not just pursuing the standard escalation to higher peaks that all now have herd paths on them, (Denali, Aconcagua, Chomolungma). Let's see some wild and obscure places. How about a ski traverse of some of the high peaks in Labrador? Maybe ski some remote volcanos in Chile/Argentina. How about a climb of a glaciated peak on a remote island in the southern ocean? Kayak down the Mackenzie river. Bike pack from Yellowknife to Tuktoyaktuk.

YAY!! M.A. is back! Missed your adventures. Super Sick Line! Very aesthetic, thanks for bringing us along. Probably grateful it clouded-up on the way out, or I bet that snow would've been isothermal and stickier than a bad batch of rice. Also, to make things sort of confusing- that's 14,017' Wilson PEAK in the upper LH corner of this amazing shot kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYTWh3awg7FlZ9E Yup, two Wilsons right near each other. Climbed it last summer, rewarding day.
