Rustedblade *PLAYING DEVIL’S ADVOCATE... a lot of high level boxers do things that beginners are taught to be absolute no-no’s: Kovalev fights with his hands near his waist, Ali frequently crossed his feet, Pacquiao frequently lunges and leaves himself open, etc.. The difference is this: they have developed the skill, athleticism, and tactical awareness to smooth those errors out and often gain an advantage when an inferior boxer tries to capitalize on them and, instead, puts himself in a position to be countered or otherwise lose his perceived edge. Beginners MUST have guidelines, and they must seem as inflexible and unbreakable as federal law, or they will become indifferent and nonchalant about breaking them and may develop hard-to-break habits (not returning jab, leaving chin open before throwing hook, etc.). If they are taught that these errors are equivalent to ultimate sins, then they are much more likely to develop good form and will mature faster and, therefore, be able to commit those same errors later in their development without paying such a high price. Also, you have to set guidelines with the lowest common denominator in mind (not athletic, low boxing iq, slow reflexes).

I was working on pivots with my trainer recently and was having a hard time getting deep enough to the side. Then after a couple of these videos, what my trainer wasn't showing me was after you pivot on the forward pivoting foot, you take a little hop step while or after you plant your trailing foot to get the depth you want to the side of the opponent. Not sure if that makes sense but it's not just a clean pivot on the front foot, place the trailing foot, and then you are on the side. You can do just that but you don't get as deep as when you take the little hop step. He does it in this video. In other words, it's three steps, not two.

My trainer alwayls told me to step away on my right side and not on the left to no get the power counter punch (same for 2 southspaw fighting for right side pivot) We can see Loma doing more left side steps vs rigondeaux because its 2 southspaw fighting

Hi Jay I just wanted to thank you for all you have done for boxing..Same goes for Nate.I left him a brief comment as well.It will be 40yrs in boxing and martial arts for me as of next yr..Im 57 yrs old, started at age 18.. The longest Ive ever allowed myself to stay away has been no more than 2 weeks...Sometimes we all have injuries or crisis or a death in family ect,so one may need to take a break..Its important not to let any breaks become months ,that in turn can stretch into years! One can loose so much momentum as well as fitness that will make it a struggle to get back into the groove again..For guys wondering if you can do this in later life the answer is Absolutely! it is harder to begin late in life...Consistancy and a passion and love for boxing is paramount..You don't need to be athletically gifted, it is the inner drive that will carry you to greater and better skill levels..Do not be in a rush, see this as an Art and a Science that you can constantly learn, sharpen and improve upon..If you have that Passion for it, you will feel the fun and thrill of boxing at All stages of your journey and not just at its end..I still spar twice a week, hold and hit the mitts and heavybag..As one gets older ,you alter many things in your training,but one does not have to give it up.Be flexible and fluid and willing to change what you ask of yourself as you age ..Ive been in many gyms and dojos..Have taught in many and when some have shut down,one moves on..If theres no gym, grab a friend with similar intrests and workout in a parking lot, backyard or field..You do what you need to do and find a way to express and perfect you skill,your art...I still find videos on youtube that have things that I can learn, different ways of doing something, that can be added to ones boxing vocabulary..Just as a student is learning, so also should any good teacher,trainer, also be learning..Doesnt matter how long you have been in this , there is the striving twords perfection ,but that perfection is never achieved..there is Always more that you can bring to your art..That is the beauty of it! and that is why it can be still something one looks forward to even after 40yrs or more.. Thanks again Jay and Nate for all you do..

Fascinating movement. Instinctively I would have thouht that the pivoting fighter would only rotate thru about 90-130 degrees, as pivoting in this range should upset a fighter who's not ready for it. You seem to pivot about 180 degrees, which takes longer before you can throw your next combo. Say your pivot clockwise 90-100 degrees, then you can either pivot back anti clockwise for next combo or pivot clockwise more and throw more punches from more angles in a shorter length of time. At least that's what I would do, instinctively (I've never done any proper boxing training). But if it works for you, then so be it.

There is a mma fighter called dillashaw or something like that... who does a very interesting switch to pivot... He throws the jab while switching stance in place, landing his backfoot behind the lead foot of his opponent and pivots while throwing the next punch... That punch is weak because his momentum goes to his side instead of the front, but its a good setup for combinations, ive used it a bit, it works for me...

JT Van V I've been watching a lot of your videos and it's been a great help. My boxing is getting better. Today in my sparring, my coach and the fighter that I was sparring with told me that I've improved a lot. I want to say thank you because watching your videos have been a great help for my improvement. My question is what is the best exercise to improve my cardio. In my sparring I was tired in the third round, because the boxer that I sparred with, has a lot of boxing amateur experience and he got the better of me because he wasn't tired. What training is better to improve my cardio??? I feel like jogging is not enough. Should I do more sprints and how far and how often should I do it???

Francis Tervil jog 3 miles, then do 100 meter sprint 7-10 time and when you do them jog back, back pedal, or turn sides ways shuffle when you get back to the starting point. Take 3 slow deep breath then sprint again repeat till you've banged out 7-12 of em. Then bunny hop up bleachers 5-10 times depending how many you can do. Do that for few weeks 3 times a week and you're golden.

Just a question Coach- shouldn’t the guy pivot when throwing the left hook. (Beginning of video). He throws the right uppercut then he throws the left hook. THEN he pivots (and creates an angle). But he waits until after he hooks. Don’t you think he should step with back leg with the hook and pivot the exact same time? I’m not doggin on ya. I have a club of kids I’m trying to teach the ‘most effective’ way. Thank you. And thanks for all the great videos! This stuff is valuable knowledge!!!!
@PrecisionBoxing
@PrecisionBoxing 2 жыл бұрын
You tell me. When should you pivot with the hook and when should you not?
@wethepeople9161
@wethepeople9161 2 жыл бұрын
@@PrecisionBoxing well, when throwing the Left hook, we twist the front foot and take a step with the back leg. It’s a very small step but not a pivot. If I were hooking and moving to the left, then I suppose I would pivot. But to the right? You see, I was taught to step over with the back foot when throwing the hook. It gets your head over farther (out of the line of fire) and it also sets you up if you want to cut an angle. But not all coaches teach this. Some just teach the ‘twist’ with the hook. The reason I ask is because when watching the video, your boy looks out of place when he makes the 3 moves - Right hand upper cut, left hook, then pivot. Hence I ask you if it were supposed to be: Right hand, left hook while pivoting. BUT,… Then I went and watched a video on Coach Anthony’s Channel. He says that when your hook lands on the opponent, your stepping foot should hit the ground. One action. I got it. Crystal clear. Time for practice. I still like your videos very much. Thanks

why does Nate, actually a lot of boxers, touch their foreheads with their lead hand after demonstrating a combo? e.g. 1:26, 1:41, 2:15, 2:56, 4:19, 4:40

usually when you got headgear on that doesn't fit too well and you spar it gets moved around so you fix it, some ppl let it become a habit all the time

This is all wrong. Last punch out. Only time you use opposite hand to pivot off of is when your able to control your opponents head and move around them. Using the left hook to bait your pivot to the right is asking for a devastating right hand counter after the left hook. He should be going the other way after the hook. Only way to avoid the right hand. As soon as the left hand touches the right glove of your opponent, an elite fighter will react too fast for this pivot to happen. Enjoy that right hand sandwich.

I don't like this, coach. Why not go to his right side after a right hand, and to the left after a check hook?

These are just options my friend, nothing is set in stone. Go with your preference but keep yourself open to creatvity and options. The goal is to not let your opponent know your patterns.
