There’s a MAJOR difference between being a cautious fighter, and being a defensive fighter. And for me, Shakur doesn’t fall into the latter. He’s the former. Fighting to not lose while depending on his speed to simply avoid danger. Rigo is probably my favorite fighter to watch and he Was defensive first. That’s not the same as Shakur. Even in Low output rounds Rigo was very active. Same with Pernell. He really helped changed judging entirely by his style alone. Even defensive minded fighters can be ring generals. And neither money nor pretty boy were lacking offensive output And effective defensive maneuvers. At light weight Shakur has been missing both. He’s shown good defense but again that’s hardly the same as defensive posturing and tactical deployments of defense such as traffic congestion and blinds. Shakur at this weight I’ll stress thus far is a risk averse boxer. He’s not a defensive operator imo . That’s giving his bouts too much credit. I wanna root for the guy but he’s making it impossible

The problem with him not having enough power lies in his punching technique. He doesn't rotate his body enough, hits mainly with his arms to score,and to win exchanges, and he doesn't sit down on his punches enough. He also moves way too much when he's trying to hurt someone. I see similarities with Pernell, who also moved around too much when punching, but he was much more entertaining. I do think he can develop and get better offensively. Many of the best of the best have developed their styles during their careers, though not all (Monzon, Nicolino Locche, Juan M. Marquez for example).

It's his style, he's not a risk taker and won't go for the kill unless he's certain. Coach Kenny said he thinks he isn't a natural south paw and there's videos of him writing with his right hand when signing autographs. He is right handed but uses south paw, so he uses his strongest hand to jab for defence and points rather than for power or to try and ko. If he rotates his body to generate more power from the ground up, it would be more risky for counters and a little slower. He chooses not to do it so he doesn't get hit as much as possible, especially if the opponent is a puncher. If he took more risks, I'm sure he'll rotate and put his body into it more but only if he chooses to. He needs to know when to turn the switch on and go into kill mode.

Everyone keeps forgetting this but professional boxing is “professional” because of the money aspect. It’s pro boxing because they are getting paid, this is not a competition based on boxing skills, it’s prize fighting, it’s an event meant to entertain. You want the best boxer then watch competitive boxing in the Olympics and other international non professional competition.

What a load of nonsense. Professional boxing is professional because of the skill level; the pay is because of the increase in skill level. Entertainment is subjective. Boxing is no longer who's next???? It's about identifying with social media platforms and followers and top money makers regardless of who they fight. The Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis fight was by far the worst, but what it lacked in boxing, because it was a one sided fight it had all the drama of girls night out. Shakur Stevenson isn't boring he's just not a heavy social media star or box office attraction. But when it comes to boxing Shakur Stevenson is one of the best. "Just keep winning." Look at Tarance Bud Crawford many considered him a boring boxer,but he kept winning and conquering until it became obvious that he was even better then most commentators actually understood his style of two handed boxing. Breaking away from the conventional predictable left and right hand fighting styles. The great ones have this ability making it easier for them to beat their opponents based on their opponents weaknesses to adjust to the constant changes and their slow boxing skills to pickup on it. Marvin Hagler, Floyd Mayweather, Aaron Pryor, Oscar De la Hoya, and Tarance "Bud" Crawford had it, they could change from one dimension in a heartbeat. Don't force the issue just keep moving up in weight conquering multiple weight classes and eventually they'll have to come through your door. Knock Knock! That's how Floyd Mayweather's promotion did it. He got away from Bob Arum's Top Stink promotion and made history for himself. Sometimes you have got to take the risk and that's the difference between Floyd Mayweather Jr and everyone else.

Shakur is a great fighter but he is boring you don’t have to be a knockout artist to be exciting I love defensive minded fighters also but Imo nothing to flash pulling back and using feet he ain’t no sweet pea I like plant defence bam tank plenty of fighters are defensive shakur is just becoming a joke a hyper sensitive fighter that can’t take criticism will never take risks in fights if he feels a slight bit of danger it will be a trash fight

Fans started a false narrative about Shakur Stevenson,saying he is a runner. He stood in the middle of the ring with Artem Harutyunyan all fight.He dominated the fight maybe winning all 12 rounds.He still is WBC champ, all roads lead back to him.He has tried to make fights with William Zepeda,Pittbull Cruz,Frank Martin and they all declined. The sanctioning bodies should drop people in the rankings if they turn a fight down.Shakur can only fight the person in front of him right now in his career.The top fighters in 135lb division refuse to fight him.

this is business all day long clearly for one reason or another, Shakur wants to be paid accordingly and be involved in main events against top fighters, well that's not happening hence Saudi gaining territory in boxing that makes even more sense. Now as a free agent Shakur may likely move there. Bud already did that.

Reel fans of the sport don't have a single problem with Stevenson. Stevenson is as good defensively as Whitaker was. And I don't want to burst the bubble but they also said wetaker was a boring fighter. But you show me a fighter who can stand in the pocket slip punches left and right and still land his own counters that's boring
@billystone82044 ай бұрын
Shakur is nothing like Whitaker defensively he doesn’t stay in pocket he pulls away from punches or jump back with feet that’s why a lot of the time he doesn’t counter because he’s to far away he sets up combinations when he ready but defensive mastery never command of distance on another level hardly slips and rolls punches good control game when he’s not feeling threatened
@gael.75934 ай бұрын
"Real fans" are a minority. This is the entertainment industry. The average viewer isn't some boxing enthusiast that is in love with subtle technical movements, they just want to see people get into an exciting scrap. I admire Shakur's skills and accomplishments, but he'll never have the mainstream success of Tank or Ryan if he doesn't become appealing to the casual audiences.

@@billystone8204 Pulling back and stepping back is part of defense….. that’s what good trainers teach. And he does so with immaculate timing. Thats HOF defensive skills…. And he absolutely slips punches and roll with punches. But instead of countering right away, he often angles or circles into another position to reset his offense. I mean seriously, these comments are just ridiculous.

Forgot to mention he had a record low bad performance, went on Twitter and decided to cry about it and engage the haters for weeks and made the case worse. Then he gets the chance to redeem himself and doesn't, he then runs with the Twitterson persona and decides to tweet as if he's lost. Literally if he just shut up and take his W people would forget

@@JaceRivera-t2wMario Barrios where it was in 140? Manage to win against Cruz with 1 hand? Both Leo and Ryan were good opponents and Hector was a tough guy. Who has Shakur fought? Besides, Davis was a young prospect and he not only fought but KOed Pedraza who was a top elite in his prime(at the time) so that's still a memorable big win. I don't see any of Shakur's fights near close to that kind of achievement
