Not a criticism and I'm sure you meant nothing by it, but dying in an accident before you can fulfil your potential isn't a wasted talent. That's a lost talent and completely tragic at that, what a damn shame.

Marvin Sonsona was definitely the biggest wasted talent of Philippine Boxing. The kid had a huge potential to be the next Nonito Donaire Jr. (Similar fighting style) Marvin made history becoming the youngest Filipino world champion at a very young age at just 19 years old. Unfortunately he was lacking work ethic, very undisciplined, and his bad environment/neighborhood in his hometown General Santos City in the Philippines also had a huge contribution in his downfall. He had all the skills and talent but he didn't have the mindset of Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire Jr.
@interestedparty75232 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm shocked. You'd think growing up in General Santos would only make him work harder, but it's not always like that, plus we don't know if leeches were all around him and that perhaps that made him disillusioned with boxing.

@WarioSaysSo2 ай бұрын
@@thediaz07 Yes James Toney is 110% right up there. Toney was greatly tallented and had a great career overall, but IF he had been diciplined, more commited to his career and more strict with himself he could have been not only "a" champion, but a GREAT champion from middleweight to light heavyweight. Problem was that Toney was often described outside the ring as "A greatly tallented and gifted fighter naturally but lazy and arrogant and did not like to train". Early in Toney's career he was trained by Bill Miller, who had trained former heavyweight champion Ezzard Charles expressed Toney lacked a lot of dicipline, that if he was more "hungry" he could become so much better. The bigger problem was that Toney constantly struggled with maintaining his weight. Even for a Middleweight, Toney is below the avarage middleweight height and that height was on its rise up even at his time till where we are today, but he could not jeep himself away from eating. Okay, so he jumps up to super middleweight, its not that far away and it is still within his area of being a dominant force. Oh oh no it fast escalated and he must jump up again to light heavyweight. Okay we are 2 classes above where we should but it should be fine. Toney can't become a LH champion here? Oh no he ate himself even above cruiserweight now..... Toney never became a legit LH world champion and like before ate himself out of the division. After his upset loss to Drake Thadzi, a boxer he SHOULD have been much better against instead dropped a decision and a big reason was again his lack of dicipline as he had to fast shave off weight to make the cut. 1 month after and he is up at cruiserweight level now, getting a decision over a blown-up light middleweight Steve Little. Between 1997-1999 Toney was evreywhere and could not stay consistent. He was even at 201 lbs a HW fighting a journyman (!) And when Toney made it back after 2002 to become a title contender again, he barrely won the IBF title in 2003 from Vassily Jirov and left the division to become a full time HW (?). Sure he won against a shoulder-injured Holyfield but beside that did not make much noise in the ring. Toney had some fine moments at HW but overall he was out of his league there. He got a gift draw against Rahman, twice got caight cheating with illegal substances, and was hammered by Samuel Peter twice and never won a world HW title. If he had not juiced (1st time) against John Ruiz (not a great champ BTW) he would have had a belt, but the fight turned NC and he was stripped off the record as ever have won the belt. Then getting beat-up by journyman level Lucas Brown and a try back at CW, getting out-boxed by Russian Denis Lebedev, to later lose back-to-back against club level boxers... If Toney had maintained his career he could very likley had been one of the best ever middleweight to light heavyweight beside era rivals Roy Jones Jr and Bernard Hopkins (who he declined to fight a rematch with / could not bother making required catch-weight)

There's 2 types to wasted talent which I explained at the beginning. Williams didn't waste his career. His best years were wasted because no one wanted to fight him forcing him to stay busy against guys who won't push his career forward. When he did get that big opportunity against Pavlik, for it to get cancelled .It set him back once more to face a guy he didn't have to face but more than likely would have faced later when he became champion. Then to make things worse , they made him face a high rated contender in his comeback fight when he was originally set to face a guy that was much more appropriate after such a loss.
