If I'm not mistaken, Max Schmelling didn't support the Nazis and didn't appreciate their use of him as a symbol of Aryan superiority. Pretty sure he shook Joe Louis's hand before that fight to let him know he wasn't prejudiced.

To boot, he paid for Joe funeral and everything. Joe became broke in later years, while Scmhelling did well for himself. He was a good man.
@joshstein47086 ай бұрын
This is true, and it actually goes a lot deeper than that. In later interviews, Schmelling even said he was glad he lost that fight to Louis. (I always wondered if he also felt that way about his earlier loss to Baer, which was also treated as Aryan v. Jewish propo piece, and Baer messed him up.) Schmelling was, by all reports, not-a-Nazi and generally a very good dude.

He won his fights during the build-up, everything past that was the show he put up for us fans. And boy was it a great show. The only thing critics could come out with was that he was boring lol I translated that to mean "We know you are gonna win". Lol he really is the greatest. I mean look at who people talk about today, Fury vs Francis. Talk about a step down in class! Mayweather wrote the book and then sold you a page at a time. Nice job with the fight choices and commentary. You summed it up perfectly about the "quitter" label and Billy Joe Saunders -- not a quitter, just an asshole who got what he deserved. That ring size controversy was an attempt to get out of the fight, as the ring was the size specified in the contract. If Canelo hadn't been so generous and allowed the ring to be enlarged, and if Saunders went home as he threatened, THEN we could have called him a quitter. But not about a fractured orbital bone. I'm glad Daniel DuBois is back and healthy and was vindicated by the irony of Saunders' inability to continue with the same injury. I doubt we see Saunders in the ring again; his next public appearance is more likely to be on the police blotter for some racist or misogynist act of which we've seen hints. On the other hand, I'd love to see David Benavidez in the ring with Saunders, sending him into retirement permanently. Anyway, great job on these fights with your balanced insights into what makes these guys tick and what it all means in the larger picture.

In all fairness, the story about Liston coming and smacking Ali (Clay) at a craps table has ALSO been told in reverse, where Liston was gambling and minding his odb and Clay approached him with his entourage and began talking shit about how ugly and bad at craps Sonny Liston was, at which point, Liston got up, punched Ali, and threatened him with a handgun. Given Ali's penchant for bravado, I actually find this version much easier to believe.
@atlien1988 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think this was the more accurate story. It's told that Liston actually pulled out the gun & everyone's in Ali camp ran off.
@danielhowell3988 Жыл бұрын
There is literal footage of this. Not sure why we are talking like it isn't. Liston was gambling, Ali approached (he had been doing constant harrassment to liston, even at night and at his house i believe.) Liston upon seeing Ali proceeded to pull out a handgun - firing multiple shots. Ali and his Camp (and a lot of others obviously) ran for the hills - afterwards liston proceeds to "shoot" his jacket - revealing they were just blanks.

I used to say the same thing about match buildups are about personalities, but it grew pretty tiresome after seeing what felt like canned responses and reactions for over 30 years - it got more juvenile and trolly which wore thin on me as I got older. What I'd love to see ( and since you made a similar reference several times in recent releases ) is a guy like a Makinouchi Ippo - soft spoken, polite, but straight savage when the bell rings; Grateful, and appreciative after a solid hard-fought win. It'd be a breath of fresh air - but then again, I used to think Roy Jones Jr was probably the greatest showman of my time and wouldn't mind seeing another like him come up.
@OfficeHanchoBoxing2 жыл бұрын
I understand where you coming from, I point that to personalities that try to emulate others and go by similar trash talking scripts without thinking outside of the box. That gets boring too. Reasons why Spence's subtleness without raising his voice was original and just entertaining. Verbal Tai chi throwed Brook haha with common sense. It takes 2 to tango and being articulate is very important in promoting a fight which most fighters lack of those skills . But fighters back in the old days were very articulate , witty and can quickly come up with a one liner in their mental dictionary of roasting. More to why you had some boxers become some pretty solid actors as practically they were being themselves on the screen
@BiggieTrismegistus2 жыл бұрын
I'm more of an MMA fan than boxing but I know exactly what you mean. The first guy in MMA to really get known for his talking was Chael Sonnen and I liked what he was doing because he was actually funny and entertaining. He had clearly taken inspiration from pro wrestling heels and there was a wink in everything he said ("I thought that when you tapped the round ended, not the fight"). Then Conor McGregor blew up and at first I enjoyed him too, but the wheels eventually fell off. For the last few years his supposedly amazing trash talk consists of insults that middle schoolers would find embarrassing. His "respectful Conor" persona is even worse. Other guys have resorted to the same tired loud-mouthed asshole act (to the point of straight up stealing quotes from McGregor) and I just want them to shut the hell up. I'm not opposed to fighters being flamboyant or even talking shit as long as there's some thought put into it. Just resorting to schoolyard insults combined with a swaggering dickhead attitude doesn't make someone an entertaining personality.

I can't stress how popular Hatton was in Manchester, during his prime. Both fighters looked untouchable. I could only imagine a decision in the favor of the more aggresive guy (being youngs fans, like we were) I was a huge fan of Khan since he really was a good guy and spoke to me on thephone when my dad met him one day. I couldn't even support Khan wihout being reminded what Hatton was about. He was a big representative of Man City but that wasn't the case for the majority of my school although everyone was still behind him. When he lost there was nothing to laugh about since everyone was on his side. We just quietly went back to business although things weren't the same. They seemed to think that because Calzaghe was from some tiny village in Wales training in an a tiny gym that it meant he had no talent while Lacey was training in some top class gym. It doesn't matter where you train, it's talent and the will to win that counts. Calzaghe NEVER turned his back on his roots and it showed in the way he never lost a fight.
